Hindustan Times identified the former students as Himanshu, from Nangal, and Aryan, from Ambala. The outlet reported that police allege the two circulated messages in social-media groups claiming that two female students had died by suicide and that their bodies could not be found. The gathering escalated into clashes and damage to property, according to contemporaneous coverage. The Indian Express reported that two police vehicles were damaged and a police employee was assaulted. Reports also described damage to campus property; they do not establish that every person at the gathering took part in violence.

Patiala SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans told Hindustan Times: “We are not ruling out the role of students of the university. All possible angles are being investigated to ascertain what led to the incident.” His statement described the investigation’s scope; it did not establish that current students were involved.
Were the claims about student deaths confirmed?
No. Earlier Hindustan Times coverage reported that the university registrar dismissed the suicide claims as baseless and attributed to police and medical authorities the conclusion that the online claims were false. Those denials and conclusions are reported statements; the underlying official statements and records were not available in the coverage reviewed here.

What is known about the case so far?
Hindustan Times reported that an FIR was registered at Banur police station on September 29 under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The Times of India reported that ten additional people were named and that the two arrested men were remanded to three days of police custody. These procedural details are attributed to those outlets; the FIR and court order were not available to independently confirm them.
