Star Wars: Galactic Racer is a new, runs-based racing game set in an outlaw circuit in the post-Empire Outer Rim—not a remake of Star Wars Episode I: Racer. Early coverage praises its speed, distinct craft handling and replayable campaign, while also flagging challenging races, a thin story and occasional concerns about rival behavior. Those are pre-release impressions, not a settled verdict from players: the game is scheduled to launch October 6, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
What kind of Star Wars racing game is it?
The story takes place after the Empire’s fall, while the New Republic rebuilds. An unsanctioned Outer Rim racing circuit, the Galactic League, attracts racers backed by syndicates. You play Shade, who enters the competition in pursuit of revenge and glory. The official pitch centers on speed, risk, skill and strategy rather than Force powers or prophecy.

This is a new title with its own setting and competition, not a remake. Official descriptions name landspeeders, speeder bikes, skim speeders and podracers. They confirm a solo story campaign and competitive multiplayer, as well as craft customization and different vehicle physics. Steam lists online PvP and cross-platform multiplayer; that listing does not by itself establish final platform parity or how cross-play works in practice.

Different craft, different handling
In its June hands-on preview, Xbox Wire described three chassis with distinct trade-offs: landspeeders felt heavier and suited to drifting; speeder bikes were faster in a straight line but harder to corner; and skim speeders banked sharply and demanded more control. Podracers are included in the official craft list, but the available descriptions do not establish whether they have a separate standalone mode.

Runs through a branching tour
Xbox Wire’s preview describes the campaign as a three-act Galactic Tour that is randomized each time it starts. Players choose branching routes and earn rewards that can be applied to a speeder. The writer also reported aggressive contact, a rechargeable Afterburner and a higher-risk Ramjet that can overheat. These are preview observations, not independently verified mechanics.
Meristation’s October 2 pre-release review describes planet-spanning routes and events including standard races, time trials and eliminations. Choosing between events can trade greater difficulty for better rewards. Its reviewer estimated a successful route at roughly 30–45 minutes; that is one reviewer’s play experience, not a guaranteed run length.

What do early reviews say about the game?
Xbox Wire reported about an hour of hands-on play across campaign and arcade modes at Summer Game Fest: Play Days. Its writer found the game challenging and praised its apparent depth, replayability, cinematic storytelling and differences between chassis. This is a platform-publisher preview based on limited play, not a broad critical consensus.

Meristation’s October 2 pre-release review was positive about the feel of the races, track design, audiovisual presentation and replay value of the campaign’s roguelike-style structure. The same reviewer described the campaign story as largely anecdotal and wanted more variety in arcade challenges. They also reported occasional moments when CPU rivals seemed to gain implausible speed or land a last-moment shot. Those are attributed impressions from a pre-release review, not established evidence of a universal or persistent problem.

Is it worth buying at launch?
The early coverage points to a racer built around tactile differences between craft and repeated campaign runs, rather than a story-first Star Wars adventure. That mix may suit players who want to learn routes, manage risk and replay races. The reported challenge and the reviewer’s concerns about story depth, arcade variety and some CPU moments may matter more to players looking for a forgiving racer or a substantial narrative.
Because the game has not launched as of October 3, 2026, there is not yet a sound basis to judge its long-term balance, final performance or player reception. Treat the positive and negative points above as early, attributed impressions rather than a settled post-launch review verdict.
