Repairing a TV that will not turn on can be worthwhile, but the symptom alone does not tell you what has failed or what a repair will cost. First rule out the remote, outlet, power connections, and a temporary lockup. If the TV still will not start, get a model-specific diagnosis and written quote, then compare the full cost and repair coverage with the replacement TV you would actually choose.
Check whether the problem is outside the TV
A failed remote, loose power cord, dead outlet, or connected device can make a working TV appear broken. Try these checks before arranging a repair:

- Check the power connection. Inspect the cord and its accessible connections at both ends. Do not use a visibly damaged cord. Test the wall outlet with another small device, and temporarily bypass a power strip, surge protector, extension cord, or smart plug.
- Use the TV’s physical power button. If the TV starts this way, the remote is a likely place to investigate. Replace its batteries with a fresh matching pair and check the remote’s markings or manual for the correct battery type.
- Power-cycle the TV. Unplug it for the period specified in the instructions for your model. Timing varies: TCL’s Google TV guidance says at least 60 seconds, while Sony’s guidance for the models covered by its article says two minutes. Neither timing should be treated as universal.
- Disconnect external devices. Remove HDMI, USB, and other connected equipment, leaving only the TV’s power connected, then try starting it. If it works, reconnect devices one at a time to identify a possible device or connection issue.
These checks follow manufacturer troubleshooting guidance from TCL and LG USA Support. The correct instructions can vary by model.
Use the TV’s behavior as a clue
Note whether the indicator light is off, steady, or flashing. Also record any clicks, sounds, brief screen illumination, or startup logo. These observations can help support staff distinguish a power problem from a picture or input problem, but an indicator pattern is not a definitive diagnosis. Consult the instructions for your specific model.

- Repeated flashing: Record the pattern and consult model-specific support information; persistent flashing can warrant service.
- Sound or screen activity without a picture: The TV may be starting up while experiencing a picture or input problem, rather than having no power.
Panasonic’s indicator guidance is for UK support, and manufacturers’ light patterns and instructions differ. Do not assume a code has the same meaning across brands or models.
Know when to stop troubleshooting
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if the basic checks do not resolve the problem, the indicator repeatedly flashes, or you hear unusual electrical sounds. Unplug the TV and stop using it if you notice smoke, sparks, a burning odor, liquid intrusion, or visible damage. Do not continue testing a set with these warning signs.

How to compare repair with replacement
There is no defensible universal rule that says a repair is worthwhile below a particular percentage of a TV’s price. The relevant comparison is the actual repair quote versus the cost of a replacement that meets your needs.
- Total repair cost: Ask whether the quote includes diagnosis, parts, labor, transport, and any other fees.
- Repair coverage: Find out whether the work and parts come with a warranty, and what that warranty covers.
- TV condition: Consider the set’s age, overall condition, and any faults besides the power problem.
- Replacement cost and features: Compare the quote with a current replacement of a size and feature level you would actually buy, not an abstract average.
- How long you expect to keep it: A repair may make more sense if the set otherwise meets your needs and you expect to use it for a while; a replacement may make more sense if the TV has other problems or no longer suits you.
Ask for a model-specific diagnosis and a written quote before deciding. The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s 2019 television reparability report notes that repair requires electronics knowledge and access to service documentation, factors that can affect cost and a consumer’s decision. It does not establish a universal repair-versus-replacement threshold.

What to tell the repair provider
Clear observations can help a provider assess the issue. Have the TV’s model information available, and note what you already checked and what happened.
- Whether the indicator is off, steady, or flashing, including the flashing pattern if you can record it.
- Whether the physical power button behaves differently from the remote.
- Any sounds, brief illumination, or startup logo.
- Whether the TV starts with external devices disconnected.
- Any visible damage or exposure to liquid, smoke, or unusual electrical events.
Ask for the diagnosis, full price, and repair warranty in writing. LG USA Support’s 2025 “Troubleshooting Power Issues” guidance recommends contacting its customer support to arrange diagnosis and repair if the issue persists; service options and warranty terms depend on the TV, location, and circumstances.
