An authorization hold is a temporary reservation of money or credit, not proof that a purchase has posted. If the hold disappears, the merchant may still submit the final charge later. There is no universal expiration deadline: timing depends on the card issuer, card product, transaction type, and when the merchant finalizes or releases the authorization.
What happens to an authorization hold?
When you use a card, the merchant may ask the issuer to approve an amount. The pending authorization temporarily reduces the funds available in a debit account or the available credit on a credit card. It is not necessarily a completed charge.

The merchant can submit the final transaction, release the authorization, or leave it uncaptured until the authorization expires under the applicable rules. When the final transaction is captured, it becomes a posted charge. If the hold expires or is released first, your available funds or credit may recover even though the merchant can still submit the purchase afterward.
That is why a pending charge disappearing does not, by itself, mean the purchase was canceled. Wells Fargo says the merchant controls when it submits a debit transaction and that posting can occur from the same day to several weeks later. Wells Fargo’s debit-card guidance advises monitoring pending and posted activity.

How long can a hold last?
There is no single deadline for every card or purchase. Issuers publish different timelines, and the stated period may use calendar days or business days. The examples below are institution-specific guidance or terms, not national averages or guarantees for other cards.
| Issuer or product | Published timing | What the figure applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Wells Fargo debit cards | Generally within 5 calendar days from authorization, or until the transaction is paid; certain transactions can take longer. | Wells Fargo’s general debit-card guidance. Source |
| Chime | Most hotel and gas holds release within 7 business days; car-rental holds may take up to 30 days. | Chime help-page examples for those transaction types. Source |
| PayPal Business Debit Mastercard | Ordinary authorization holds may last up to 7 days. Certain hotel and rental pre-authorizations may last up to 30 days; an adjusted or extended pre-authorization may have another period of up to 30 days. | Terms for this specific card product and agreement, not all PayPal cards. Source |
| Capital One credit cards | Minutes to a month. | A broad consumer-education range, not a guaranteed term for an individual card or transaction. Source |
To apply an issuer’s estimate, check whether it describes your card type and transaction, then count days using the convention it specifies. A 5-calendar-day estimate and a 7-business-day estimate are not interchangeable.

Why do hotel, rental, gas, and restaurant holds vary?
Some merchants do not know the final amount when they request authorization. A hotel may authorize an amount that includes an estimated deposit; a rental company may authorize funds against potential charges; a fuel pump may reserve an amount before the final fuel purchase is known; and a restaurant may authorize the bill before a tip is included. Online orders shipped in multiple parts can also involve delayed or split final charges.

A debit-card hold can be especially disruptive because it temporarily ties up money in the account, even when the posted balance looks adequate.

What to do when a pending charge disappears or stays too long
- Check the entry. Confirm whether it is pending or posted. Note the merchant, amount, card type, and authorization date.
- Ask the merchant what happened. Ask what amount it authorized, whether it submitted the final transaction or released the authorization, and what timing it expects for the release or final charge.
- Check your issuer’s own guidance. Use the terms for your specific card and transaction. Pay attention to whether the stated window is in calendar or business days.
- Keep track of available funds or credit. A hold may release before a delayed purchase posts, so avoid treating the temporarily restored amount as necessarily free to spend. Track pending items and scheduled payments.
- Contact the issuer if the hold outlasts its stated window. Use the number on your card or the issuer’s official support channel. Keep the receipt and records of your conversations. Capital One and Chase also advise contacting the merchant and issuer when a hold does not clear as expected.
If a charge you do not recognize has posted, use your issuer’s dispute process. A posted charge is different from an ordinary pending authorization.

Yes. The pending authorization and the final posted transaction can occur at different times. The hold may expire or be released before the merchant submits the final amount, so keep watching both pending and posted activity until the purchase is accounted for. If the final charge is unfamiliar or the amount seems wrong, contact the merchant and follow your issuer’s procedures for a posted transaction.
