Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A TV that will not turn on may have no power, may be stuck in standby, or may be responding to the TV’s button but not its remote. Start with the outlet and accessible connections, then test the TV’s own power button, try a model-appropriate reset, and disconnect external devices. These checks can narrow down the problem, but a standby light or blank screen alone cannot identify a failed internal part.
First, identify what “won’t turn on” looks like
Note what happens when you press power: Is the standby light off, steady, or blinking? Does the TV respond to its own button? Does the light change while the screen stays blank? These observations help choose the next check, but indicator meanings vary by model and manufacturer.

- No indicator light: The TV may be off or unplugged, or power may not be reaching it. On some Sony models, an energy-saving switch can also affect the indicator.
- Steady standby light: The TV may have power but not be starting in response to the remote or its own controls. A steady light does not, by itself, establish the cause.
- Blinking light: On Sony TVs, a blinking red indicator means the set has detected an issue. The meaning of a pattern is model-specific, so check the manual or the manufacturer’s support page.
Sony explains these indicator possibilities in its BRAVIA indicator-light guidance. Do not assume the same colors or blink patterns mean the same thing across brands.
Check whether power is reaching the TV
- Test the wall outlet. Plug in a small appliance you know works. LG and Sony both recommend checking the outlet as an early step. If the appliance also fails, investigate the outlet or circuit rather than the TV.
- Check accessible cord connections. If the TV has a removable power cord or external adapter, make sure its accessible connections are secure at both ends. Look for visible damage; do not open the TV or handle internal electrical parts.
- Temporarily bypass a power strip or surge protector. If the outlet is working, connect the TV directly to it for a test. If the TV starts, the strip or surge protector may be part of the problem; this test does not mean you need to buy a replacement.
Sony’s general no-power checks and LG’s TV power troubleshooting both include outlet checks. Sony’s guidance also advises checking the power connection and testing without an intervening power strip. Some TV cords are not removable, so do not force a connection or assume a generic replacement cord will fit.

Try the TV’s button to separate remote trouble from TV trouble
Press the power button on the TV itself, then try the supplied remote. The button may be under the screen, along a side or rear edge, or integrated into a control nub; consult the manual if you cannot locate it.
- The TV turns on from its own button but not the remote: Check that the remote’s batteries are installed in the correct orientation. Replace them with the type specified for that remote, not a size chosen by guesswork. Sony’s remote-control troubleshooting guidance recommends checking battery installation and charge.
- Neither control starts the TV: Continue with the power reset and accessory checks. This result does not prove that a particular internal component has failed.
Try a model-appropriate power reset
If the outlet and accessible power connections are sound, unplugging the TV briefly may clear a temporary malfunction. The wait time is not universal: Sony’s general no-power guidance specifies at least 30 seconds, while its symptom-based instructions describe a two-minute reset. Follow the instructions for your exact TV model and symptom rather than treating either interval as a rule for every set.

- Turn the TV off if it responds.
- Unplug it from the wall outlet.
- Wait for the duration specified in the manufacturer’s model-specific instructions.
- Reconnect the power and try turning the TV on with its physical button.
A factory reset is different from unplugging the TV: it can remove customized settings and account or application data. Sony’s BRAVIA factory-reset instructions apply to certain models and warn about this data loss. Do not use a factory reset as a first-line power check; consult your model’s instructions and make sure you understand what will be erased.
Test the TV without connected devices
An HDMI, USB, or other external device can complicate troubleshooting. Turn off the TV, disconnect attached devices, and try starting the TV by itself. If it starts, reconnect one device at a time, testing after each connection. The device or connection present when the symptom returns is useful information for further troubleshooting, but the test alone does not establish why the TV failed to start.

Know when to contact support or arrange service
If the TV still will not start after the external checks, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair service. Avoid opening the TV or attempting internal electrical repairs. A failed outlet test, whether the TV responds to its physical button, the indicator’s color and blink pattern, and the result of testing without accessories will help support narrow down the issue.
Sony and LG recommend escalating when their basic checks do not resolve a power problem. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that any one symptom means a particular power board, fuse, or other internal part has failed.
