A service menu is a separate, technical mode intended for model-specific diagnostics and servicing—not a more advanced consumer picture menu. Its functions and procedures vary by TV, so don’t change unfamiliar service-menu values without documentation for your exact model.
What are picture settings for?
Picture settings control how the TV presents the image for ordinary viewing. Depending on the model, the standard menu may let you choose a picture mode or adjust brightness, contrast, color, sharpness, motion processing, HDR or other video options, aspect ratio, and screen area or position.

These controls are intended for owners to adapt the image to their preferences, viewing conditions, or content. The available controls can differ by model, region, and what is on screen, so use the user guide for your specific TV when a setting is missing or unclear. Sony’s guide to picture and sound settings describes examples of consumer picture controls and notes that menus vary. LG likewise recommends consulting the user guide for full settings information and says its on-screen options vary by model year. LG’s on-screen display guide covers picture presets and aspect ratio.
What is a service menu?
A service menu is a technical mode documented for servicing a particular TV or chassis. It is not a universal menu with the same purpose or controls across manufacturers and models.

One example is a legacy Philips 13PR19C1 service manual for an E8 chassis. It describes three distinct modes: Service Default Mode (SDM) for error and option handling, Service Alignment Mode (SAM) for tuning and alignment, and Customer Service Mode (CSM) for operating and error information. Which menu should you use to adjust brightness or improve the picture?
Use the ordinary picture menu. Start with a picture mode, then adjust the available brightness, contrast, or color controls to suit your viewing. If you want to change how the image fits the screen, look in the regular menu for aspect ratio, screen size, or screen position options.

Menu names and navigation differ. For example, Sony UK’s picture-settings guidance provides routine settings navigation for a particular model family and says functions and picture modes depend on the model. Follow your TV’s own guide rather than assuming another brand’s or model’s path applies.
If you have already opened the service menu
- Stop before changing values you do not recognize.
- Find the TV’s exact model number and consult documentation written for that model or chassis.
- If you cannot confirm what a setting does, ask the manufacturer’s authorized support for guidance instead of trying a generic adjustment or key sequence.
Service documentation is model-bound. The Philips manual above is an example of how one chassis defines its service modes, not a guide to other TVs. The cited sources do not establish a universal effect of changing a service-menu value, a general recovery procedure, or a universal warranty consequence.
