Numbers or codes on a TV screen can identify the television, describe the incoming video signal, show status information, or report a connection problem. First note the exact wording, where it appears, which input or app is active, and your TV’s make and model. There is no universal codebook: meanings and menu paths vary by model, region, and device.
What do the numbers and codes on my TV screen mean?
Start by identifying what kind of display you are looking at. The same number may be a model identifier in one place and a video-format value in another.

- Model code: identifies the TV configuration; it is not an error.
- Info or status banner: shows details such as the selected channel, input, or signal.
- Resolution or frame-rate value: describes the video being sent to or displayed by the TV.
- Error or connection message: indicates a problem to diagnose using its exact wording.
Write down or photograph the full display before changing settings. Also note whether it appears over live TV, inside an app, or only on one external input; that distinction helps narrow down whether the TV, source device, or connection is involved.
How to identify a TV model code
A model code identifies a particular TV configuration. Samsung says newer sets may show it under Settings (All Settings) > Support > About TV or About this TV/Projector; on some older sets it is printed on the back. Menu labels differ across models. Samsung’s example for a 2020 North American TV is QN65Q800TAFXZA. Its guide interprets parts of that string as product type, market, screen size, model, generation, tuner, design, and country or market code. That example is not a universal decoding scheme: Samsung says older TVs use a different format, and regional availability and settings can differ. Do not assume that a code’s characters mean the same thing across manufacturers or generations.
What does an information banner mean?
An information banner may identify the selected channel or input, or show signal details. If it stays on screen, check the TV manual and settings for a way to hide or disable it. Menu paths depend on the model. Sony’s guidance for some Android TV and Google TV sets mentions Channel setup > Info banner > Off; treat that as a model-specific lead, not a guaranteed path for every Sony TV. What does the resolution number on my TV mean?
Resolution describes the amount of visible detail in a video image. Frame rate is a separate property: it describes how many frames are displayed each second and may be expressed in fps or Hz. Roku’s support guidance defines resolution as “the measure of how much detail you can see on the screen” and notes that common TV resolutions include 720p and 1080p. A 4K TV may also support HDR, higher frame rates, or more color information, depending on the equipment and signal. See Roku’s explanation of resolution and frame rate.

Values such as 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 2160p are video modes, not inherently error codes. LG lists these as output options in the settings for the device described in its guide, while Samsung lists examples of supported input formats. These are examples, not a promise that every TV accepts every mode; check the specifications for both the TV and the source device. What does “No Signal” mean on my TV?
“No Signal” or “Weak Signal” usually means the TV is not receiving a usable signal from the selected source. It does not by itself establish that the TV is broken. Samsung recommends checking that the external device is powered on, that the TV and device are set to the intended source or input, and that the connections are secure. If the message appears only on one input, focus first on that source device and its connection. If the TV’s own menu also has a visible defect, or the symptom appears across multiple inputs, the issue may not be limited to the connected device. Sony recommends comparing menu-screen symptoms with source-only symptoms and testing another input or device: Sony’s TV picture and signal troubleshooting guidance. Streaming resolution can also vary with network performance.
Why does my TV say “Mode Not Supported”?
This message means the video mode being sent by a connected device is not working with the TV’s supported modes or current connection. Check the specifications for both devices and set the source to a resolution they share. Samsung also recommends power-cycling the TV and source device, and trying another device at the same resolution to help isolate the problem. A long HDMI cable can sometimes contribute, but changing the cable should not be the first assumption. See Samsung’s “Mode Not Supported” guidance.

For a 4K signal at 120 Hz, Samsung says an HDMI 2.1 cable is required and recommends confirming that it is certified. That requirement applies to this particular signal setup; it is not a general fix for every screen message. Check the source setting, TV input, supported modes, and cable path before replacing equipment.

Samsung says this message means the TV’s internal clock has not been set. Follow the clock or time-setting instructions for your specific model; this message does not indicate a missing video resolution. Samsung’s explanation appears in its TV message troubleshooting guide.

Safe checks before changing settings or buying a cable
- Record the exact message. Note where it appears and whether you are watching live TV, using an app, or viewing an external input.
- Find the TV’s full model code. Check its settings or the label on the set, then use the support page or manual for that model and region.
- For a connection message, verify the source. Make sure the TV and external device are on, select the intended input on the TV, and confirm the device is outputting to that connection.
- Reseat and isolate connections. Check that cables are secure. If available, try another input or source device so you can see whether the symptom follows a particular component.
- For an unsupported mode, compare specifications. Choose an output mode supported by both the source and TV. Roku recommends automatic resolution detection in most setup cases; manual selection may help if detection fails. See Roku’s resolution guidance.
- For a persistent defect, compare the TV menu with the source picture. If the defect is present in the TV’s own menu as well as the source image, it may involve the TV rather than only that external source.
When asking for help, provide the TV make and full model code, your region, the complete message or a photo, and whether it occurs on all inputs or only one. Those details are more useful than an isolated number because manufacturers do not share one code format or universal list of screen messages.
