Game Mode prioritizes responsiveness for gaming; PC mode tells some TVs to handle a computer input differently. They are not universal, mutually exclusive settings: depending on the TV, you may be able to use a PC input configuration and still enable Game Mode or automatic low-latency mode (ALLM). For PC gaming, prioritize Game Mode or ALLM if available. For desktop work, follow the TV’s PC-input instructions and check text clarity rather than relying on the mode name.
What each mode does
Game Mode: prioritize response
Game Mode changes a TV’s handling of a picture to prioritize responsiveness, commonly by reducing some image processing that can add delay. Hisense describes its Game Mode as reducing input lag, while LG says ALLM reduces delay between game-console input and TV output. These are descriptions of intended behavior, not a universal latency figure or a comparison proving how much faster one TV is than another. See Hisense support and manuals and LG USA Support.

Some TVs enable Game Mode automatically when they detect a console; a connected PC may require manual activation. Samsung’s instructions vary by market: its Canada guidance describes automatic activation for many detected consoles and manual activation for a PC, while Samsung India also tells PC users to enable it manually. Check your model’s menu and instructions rather than assuming the TV will switch modes for you. Samsung Canada’s setup guidance applies to TVs sold in Canada; Samsung India’s Game Mode guidance was updated August 7, 2026.
PC mode: configure a computer input
“PC mode” is not a standardized TV feature with the same effects across brands and models. It may refer to an input label, input format, or a PC-specific picture setup. For example, LG’s instructions for products released in 2018 or earlier describe changing an HDMI input’s icon to PC; an LG legacy manual includes PC-specific screen adjustments. Those examples explain why the setting may matter, but do not establish how every newer TV behaves. See LG USA Support and the LG product manual library.

Game Mode and PC mode are not necessarily either-or
They address different questions: Game Mode concerns how the TV responds to games, while PC mode concerns how it handles a computer signal. Some TVs allow a PC input configuration and gaming or low-latency features at the same time. Do not assume either that both always work together or that you must choose only one; the combination depends on the model and available settings.
Picture controls may also change when gaming features are active. LG notes that some settings cannot be changed in Game Optimizer and that available options depend on the TV model. If a control you want disappears, consult the manual for that model and check which picture mode or gaming setting is active.

Choose based on what you do with the computer
| Use | What to try | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| PC gaming | Enable Game Mode or ALLM if the TV supports it and responsive controls matter. Follow the TV’s PC-input instructions if provided. | That the chosen HDMI port, PC output, resolution, refresh rate, and any HDR or VRR features are supported together. |
| Desktop work or browsing | Use the manufacturer’s PC-input configuration when its instructions recommend one. | Whether small text and colored edges look clear at your selected signal format; the mode label alone does not guarantee sharp chroma detail. |
| Gaming and desktop use on the same input | Try the PC-specific configuration and available low-latency features together if the TV permits it. | Whether the combination preserves the text clarity and picture adjustments you need without sacrificing gaming responsiveness. |
For desktop text, check chroma and scaling
Chroma 4:4:4 preserves fine color detail that can matter for small colored text and computer graphics. Whether a TV preserves it depends on the model, picture mode, input signal, and selected resolution and refresh rate. A Hisense manual says its Game Mode processes YUV 4:4:4 signals precisely; that is specific to the cited product, not a rule for every TV. Check the exact TV manual and graphics-output settings, then inspect small colored text or use a chroma test pattern. If text looks soft or colored edges blur, check the PC signal format, scaling, and TV’s PC-input guidance.
Check ports and signal settings for high-refresh gaming
A mode cannot compensate for an unsupported signal path. The TV’s particular HDMI port, the PC’s graphics output, and the cable all need to support the resolution and refresh rate you want. Samsung Canada recommends an HDMI 2.1 cable in its instructions for 4K at 120 Hz and notes that some models have more than one qualifying port. That is a model-family example, not a universal requirement for every TV or a guarantee that a cable can add capability the TV or PC lacks. Consult the Samsung Canada 4K at 120 Hz guide alongside the manuals for your own devices.

Set up a PC-to-TV connection
- Choose the HDMI port. Check the TV manual to identify a port that supports your target resolution and refresh rate; do not assume every port has the same capabilities.
- Apply PC-input guidance. In the TV’s input menu, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for a PC connection if they apply to your model.
- Enable low-latency gaming features. For gaming, turn on Game Mode or ALLM if supported and desired. Check whether the setting limits picture adjustments you use.
- Set the computer’s output. Select a resolution and refresh rate supported by both the PC and the TV’s chosen port.
- Verify desktop clarity. For text and graphics, inspect small colored text or a chroma test pattern; adjust the PC output or TV settings if details look blurred.
- Confirm the entire high-refresh signal path. For formats such as 4K at 120 Hz, check the TV port, PC output, and cable against the devices’ specifications.
Why menu steps and behavior differ
Settings, automatic switching, and supported combinations vary by manufacturer, model, software, region, and HDMI port. Samsung itself notes that its Canada guidance is for TVs sold in Canada and that settings may differ elsewhere; its India guidance may use different menus or instructions. A TV manual for the exact model and region is the most reliable guide to what a setting does and where to find it.
