Turn on captions in your TV’s Accessibility settings—but do not expect one switch to control every show and app. Captions stay on only when the source you are watching uses that setting and the program provides a caption or subtitle track. For apps and external boxes, you may need to enable captions in the app or device instead.
Start with the source you are watching
First identify whether the picture comes from an antenna or other TV broadcast, an app running on the TV, or a separate streaming box or game console. That determines where to look: the TV’s accessibility menu for supported broadcasts, the app’s playback controls for app content, or the external device’s own accessibility settings.

- TV tuner or antenna: Try the television’s Accessibility or caption settings. Availability and menu names depend on the model and software.
- Built-in streaming app: Open the app’s caption or subtitle controls during playback, or check its settings. The TV’s preference may not apply to every app.
- External box or console: Check the connected device’s accessibility settings, and the streaming app running on it if applicable.
A system preference can make captions easier to keep enabled where supported; it cannot force every source to use the same control.

Where to find the setting on common TV platforms
These are documented examples, not a universal menu path. Labels and locations can vary by model, software version, and region.

Why captions may not appear
The program does not offer a caption track
A TV or app setting cannot create captions that the movie or show does not provide. Roku notes that the content must support closed captioning, and Apple warns that not all videos include captions.
The app or connected device controls them
If a TV-wide setting has no effect, open the streaming app’s playback menu and choose its caption or subtitle option. For a set-top box or console, check that device’s accessibility controls. Samsung and LG both describe separate controls for some apps and external sources.

The text is embedded in the picture
Some videos have open captions burned into the image. Unlike selectable closed captions, these cannot be switched on or off with the TV’s caption control. Samsung explains the distinction.

Make captions easier to read
When the source exposes appearance options, adjust them to suit your viewing distance and contrast needs. Samsung lists font and background options; Apple documents controls for font, size, color, background, opacity, edge, and highlight. These settings may not carry over to every app, so check the controls in the app or device where the captions appear.

A quick troubleshooting order
- Identify the source: antenna or TV tuner, app on the TV, or external box or console.
- Check that the current show or movie offers captions or subtitles.
- Enable captions in the control panel responsible for that source: TV Accessibility for supported broadcasts, the app for app playback, or the external device for its output.
- If captions show but are difficult to read, adjust the appearance options available in that same source.
- If text is always visible and cannot be toggled, it may be embedded open captions rather than a selectable track.
Menu paths and feature behavior can change with device software, model, app, and region. The linked support pages document the examples above; where a specific version is named, use that scope rather than assuming the same path applies to older equipment.
