Turning Off Chrome Background Apps: What It Does for Battery Life

Chrome’s background-app setting can keep it running after the last window closes. Here’s how to turn it off and what to expect for battery life.

To stop desktop Chrome from staying active after you close its last window, turn off Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed in Settings → System. That may reduce battery drain, but an almost-hour gain is one person’s experience—not a predictable result or a verified benchmark.

Turn off Chrome’s background mode

  1. Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu, then choose Settings.

This setting controls whether Chrome can keep running after its final browser window closes. Google’s Chrome Enterprise policy documentation explains that background mode can start a Chrome process at operating-system sign-in and keep it running after the last window closes, allowing background apps and the browsing session to remain active: BackgroundModeEnabled policy.

Closing Chrome’s windows is not the same as quitting Chrome while background mode is enabled. Disabling the setting prevents that background mode; it does not stop Chrome from using resources while you are actively browsing.

If the setting is unavailable

On a managed installation, an administrator may control this setting through Chrome policy. Google says users cannot change it in browser settings when the policy is set. Policy changes also may not affect some ongoing tasks immediately.

How much battery life can this save?

There is no established general figure for the battery-life gain from turning off this setting. “Almost an hour” is a personal observation, not a result readers should expect on every laptop. The effect depends on whether Chrome would otherwise have been doing background work, as well as the device, battery condition, operating system, Chrome version, and workload.

To assess the change on your own computer, compare similar periods of use with the setting on and off. Keep the workload and power conditions as consistent as practical; a result from an uncontrolled comparison cannot isolate the setting’s effect from other differences.

Chrome’s three background-related controls are different

Control When it applies What it changes Platform and trade-off
Chrome background apps After you close Chrome’s last window Whether Chrome can remain running for background apps and the browsing session Desktop Chrome. Turning it off can interrupt work that depends on Chrome staying active after its windows close.
Chrome Energy Saver While you browse, when the feature is enabled Reduces image capture rate and other background tasks; stops eligible CPU-intensive background tabs Available on Windows, Mac, and Chromebooks with a battery installed. Video-conferencing and audio-playing tabs are exempt; gaming and video performance may change.
Windows background activity For apps supported by Windows’ background-activity controls Limits whether a supported app runs in the background when not actively used Windows 11 controls. Setting an app to Never can stop its notifications and updates. Desktop apps do not appear in the Installed apps background-permission controls and should be managed in their own settings.

Use Energy Saver for work in open Chrome windows

Turning off Chrome background mode is about what happens after you close the last window. It does not target background tabs in a window that remains open. For battery-conscious browsing, open Settings → Performance → Energy Saver and choose when the feature should be active. Google says Chrome uses Energy Saver to reduce image capture rate and other background tasks. Eligible CPU-intensive background tabs may be stopped, but tabs used for video calls or audio playback are unaffected. Google notes that gaming and video performance may change, and suggests the feature for situations such as longer journeys or flights. See Personalise Chrome performance. Google says Chrome performance settings cannot be personalized on iOS or Android.

Windows has a separate control for supported apps

On Windows 11, Microsoft documents this route for apps that offer background-activity controls: Settings → System → Power & battery → Battery usage, then select an app’s More options → Manage background activity. The available choices include Always, Power optimized, and Never. Microsoft says choosing Never prevents that app from running in the background when it is not actively used, but you will not receive its notifications or updates. These controls do not replace Chrome’s own setting; Microsoft notes that desktop apps do not appear in the Installed apps background-permission controls. See Manage background activity for apps in Windows.
