That combination can make Valheim feel like a small, cooperative MMORPG, but it is not an official game mode. Iron Gate says Valheim has no official mod support, and compatibility between independent mods is not guaranteed. Treat the server as a managed software project: introduce one layer at a time, test it on a copy of the world and keep a rollback plan.

What an MMORPG-style Valheim server actually needs
Valheim already supplies exploration, survival, building, bosses and biome progression. An MMORPG layer adds systems that persist beyond a single expedition and give players different reasons to keep returning. In practice, that means five separate functions:
- Progression: XP, levels, attributes and a visible sense of power growth.
- Combat identity: classes, specialisations, talents and roles such as tank, healer or damage dealer.
- Content direction: quests, objectives and rewards that organize a group’s next activity.
- Social structure: parties, shared XP and friend or group information.
- Economy: traders, contracts, cargo, reputation and progression that is not based only on killing creatures.
No single mod in the researched set supplies every layer. The most reliable design is to choose one progression foundation, then add narrowly defined systems around it. Running two independent level or attribute systems at the same time can produce conflicting saves, duplicate HUD elements or incompatible calculations.
The recommended mod architecture
1. Make Valheim MMORPG Core the progression foundation
Valheim MMORPG Core is a BepInEx plugin designed to add MMO-style progression to Valheim. Its listed features cover the part of the stack that should be established first:
- XP awarded for defeating creatures.
- Visible levels on creatures.
- Level generation influenced by biome and player state.
- Enemy-stat scaling.
- Strength, Vitality, Defense and Agility attributes.
- Attribute points for character development.
- An RPG-style HUD.
- Server-tunable configuration.
Because it changes both player growth and enemy strength, install it before classes, quests or an economy. Create a test world, verify that XP is awarded correctly, confirm that the HUD appears for the intended players and check how level generation behaves in each biome. Decide whether the server should feel more dangerous than vanilla before inviting a community; enemy scaling can change the difficulty curve for every player, not just the person who installed the mod.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →2. Choose one broader RPG system, not both by default
EpicMMOSystem offers shared group XP, custom-mob XP, an MMO-style friends list, an on-screen XP bar, monster levels and quest hooks. Thunderstore labels it for both server and client use, but its package page currently marks it as deprecated. That status is a maintenance warning: the feature list may be attractive, yet future Valheim or dependency updates can leave it broken or unsupported. Do not make it the foundation of a public long-lived server without testing the exact versions you intend to run.
WackyEpicMMOSystem is the more suitable candidate when you want progression plus activities outside combat. Its listed features include adjustable player progression, a dedicated quest button, an MMO-style friends list, group XP support through the Groups mod and skill combinations that can be used as requirements. The version page lists version 1.9.71 as of October 15, 2026. Confirm that version against your current Valheim build and all required dependencies before deployment.
Both systems overlap with MMORPG Core in areas such as XP, levels and HUD information. Start with one of them only after you have tested the core progression layer. If you select WackyEpicMMOSystem, treat its quest and social hooks as the reason for adding it; avoid enabling another mod’s duplicate XP and level calculations unless the authors explicitly document compatibility.
3. Add WayOfTheGods for classes and roles
WayOfTheGods is the strongest class-and-ability layer in this set. Its description lists six classes and 36 subclasses, unified talent trees, active abilities, summons, healing, tanking and shapeshifting. That gives a group a reason to assemble a party instead of bringing six interchangeable weapon users.

The multiplayer requirement is strict: the mod must be installed on the server and on every client, and all players must use matching major and minor versions. A mismatch is not a harmless cosmetic difference; it can prevent a player from joining or create inconsistent ability data. Record the exact release in your server’s mod manifest and distribute that same package to every participant.
Introduce WayOfTheGods after basic XP and level behavior is stable. Classes that depend on attributes, talent points or enemy levels are easier to balance when those underlying values are no longer changing. Select a limited set of classes for the first season, test respec or talent behavior, and make sure summons and active abilities do not duplicate another mod’s combat effects.
4. Add ImmersiveTrader as the economy and reputation layer
ImmersiveTrader is aimed at progression beyond combat. Its description names contracts, cargo, reputation, cooldowns and personal player-state progression with server validation. That makes it a natural final layer: players can earn status through trade and assignments while the server retains authority over important state.
Dedicated servers need the mod and its dependencies. Install it only after the progression and class stack has survived a backup-and-restore test. Contracts and reputation can become part of the world’s long-term identity, so a corrupted save or an accidental downgrade is more serious than a missing visual effect.

| Valheim MMORPG Core | Creature XP, visible creature levels, biome/player-based level generation, enemy scaling, attributes and points | Attributes rather than a full class catalogue | Not its primary focus | Not listed | BepInEx plugin; configure on the server and verify client display behavior | Can substantially alter vanilla difficulty through scaling |
| EpicMMOSystem | Shared group XP, custom-mob XP, XP bar and monster levels | Not its primary focus | Quest hooks and MMO-style friends list | Not listed | Thunderstore labels it server-side and client-side | Package is marked deprecated; version and dependency risk are high |
| WackyEpicMMOSystem | Adjustable player progression and XP-related systems | Skill combinations can gate requirements | Dedicated quest button, friends list and group XP through the Groups mod | Not listed | Check the exact release and required Groups dependency on both server and clients as applicable | Overlaps with other XP systems; version 1.9.71 is listed on its October 15, 2026 version page |
| WayOfTheGods | Uses the wider progression environment for character advancement | Six classes, 36 subclasses, talent trees, active abilities, summons, healing, tanking and shapeshifting | Multiplayer-compatible role structure | Not listed | Must be installed on the server and every client; major and minor versions must match | Strict synchronization requirement and potential combat-balance changes |
| ImmersiveTrader | Progression tied to personal player state | Not listed | Contracts and cargo assignments | Reputation, cooldowns and server validation | Dedicated server needs the mod and dependencies | Save-state and dependency changes deserve a tested rollback plan |
How to build the server, step by step
Step 1: Decide the target experience
Write down the intended server rules before installing anything. A cooperative campaign with occasional parties needs gentler scaling and fewer mandatory class requirements than a persistent role-playing community. Decide whether players may progress while playing alone, whether group XP is shared, how quickly characters should reach new tiers and whether trade is optional or required for advancement.
- Casual co-op: Use MMORPG Core with conservative enemy scaling, then add classes only after testing.
- Party-focused campaign: Add WayOfTheGods and a single group or quest system, with roles that complement rather than replace vanilla weapons.
- Persistent community world: Use a dedicated server, a tested progression foundation, WackyEpicMMOSystem for quests and groups, WayOfTheGods for roles and ImmersiveTrader for long-term economic goals.
Step 2: Prepare a clean dedicated-server profile
Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide for the Steam version, published April 11, 2024, explains the supported server setup and relevant console commands. Follow that guide for the base installation rather than copying a client world into production. Give the instance its own save directory, configuration files and mod manifest.

Keep a vanilla or minimally modded profile beside the production profile. That makes it possible to determine whether a problem comes from Valheim itself, BepInEx or a specific plugin. Do not overwrite the only copy of the world while experimenting.
Step 3: Install the loader and foundation
- Install the BepInEx version required by your current Valheim build.
- Launch the server once without gameplay mods so the loader creates its directories.
- Install Valheim MMORPG Core and any dependency it specifies.
- Start the server, join with one test client and verify XP, levels, attributes, the RPG HUD and enemy scaling.
- Change one configuration category at a time, record the result and restart between significant changes.
The exact configuration names can change between releases. Use the settings shipped with the version you installed rather than copying an old configuration from another server.

- Choose WackyEpicMMOSystem if quests, a dedicated quest button, group XP and skill requirements are more important than broad legacy compatibility.
- Choose EpicMMOSystem only after acknowledging that Thunderstore marks it deprecated and after testing the exact package with your Valheim build.
- Install every listed dependency, including Groups where WackyEpicMMOSystem requires it.
- Join with two test accounts, defeat the same creatures and confirm how XP is divided or shared.
- Open the quest and friends interfaces, then verify that abandoning, completing or repeating content does not duplicate rewards.
Do not leave both systems enabled just to compare them in the live save. Perform the comparison on disposable worlds or separate profiles; overlapping progression data can survive a mod removal.
Step 5: Install and test classes
- Install WayOfTheGods on the dedicated server.
- Install the identical major and minor release on every client.
- Have each tester select a different class or subclass and confirm that talent trees, active abilities and role mechanics load correctly.
- Test a tank, a healing-oriented build, a damage build and any summon or shapeshifting ability in a controlled area.
- Remove one client’s mod temporarily to confirm that your onboarding instructions detect the mismatch before a public event.
Class balance is affected by enemy scaling, armor, food and the rest of Valheim’s equipment curve. A class that feels weak against a level-one creature may become dominant against scaled enemies, so test across more than one biome and level range.
Step 6: Add trade and reputation last
- Back up the world and character data while the server is stopped.
- Install ImmersiveTrader and every dependency required by its release.
- Confirm that a new character can accept a contract, move cargo, receive the intended reward and observe a cooldown.
- Test reputation changes on two accounts to make sure personal state is not accidentally shared.
- Stop the server, restore the backup to a staging profile and verify that contracts and reputation survive a normal restart.
Keep a written record of which rewards are repeatable. Trade progression can become an unintended shortcut around combat or crafting if contract payouts are not aligned with the rest of the server economy.
Dedicated-server operations that prevent most failures
Version pinning and update windows
Independent mods can update at different speeds after a Valheim patch. Pin the game build, loader, mod releases and dependencies where your hosting setup allows it. Schedule updates during a maintenance window, copy the save first and test the complete package on a staging instance. Never update only the server when a mod requires client installation.

Backups and rollback
Keep multiple generations of world and character backups, including a backup taken before each major gameplay mod is introduced. Label them with the date, game build and mod profile. A backup is useful only if you have restored it successfully; practice restoring to a second profile before the community depends on it.
Client distribution
Publish one manifest containing the exact mod names, versions, dependencies and configuration files. WayOfTheGods explicitly requires server-and-client installation with matching major and minor versions. Apply the same discipline to any other plugin that changes gameplay or interfaces, even when its page does not state the requirement as strongly.
Monitoring and change control
Ask players to report the first session in which XP, levels, abilities, quests or trader rewards behave differently. Keep a short change log and change one major system at a time. If a problem appears immediately after an update, revert the last change before attempting several fixes at once.
Compatibility pitfalls and how to diagnose them
The server starts but a player cannot join
- Check that the client has the same mod version and dependencies as the server.
- For WayOfTheGods, compare both major and minor versions exactly.
- Confirm that the client is using the same BepInEx loader generation expected by the server profile.
- Try the clean test profile to separate a connection problem from a gameplay-mod conflict.
XP or levels appear twice
This usually indicates overlapping progression systems. Disable one XP or level provider in a disposable profile, then test a fresh character. Do not assume that removing a plugin from a live save will erase data it already wrote. Restore the backup if character levels, attributes or HUD values become inconsistent.
Quests or group XP do not reward players
- Verify the Groups dependency required by WackyEpicMMOSystem.
- Test with two newly created characters so old progression data does not obscure the result.
- Check whether the activity is configured for shared XP or individual credit.
- Look for a version mismatch before changing reward settings.
Enemies are unexpectedly strong
MMORPG Core can generate levels based on biome and player state and can scale enemy statistics. Compare the same creature in the same biome with the plugin disabled on a test copy. If the increase is intentional, adjust the server configuration gradually and communicate the new curve; if it is not, restore the previous configuration rather than compensating with unrelated weapon or class buffs.
Trader progress disappears or behaves differently after an update
Stop the server, restore the last known-good backup to a staging profile and test ImmersiveTrader with its dependencies before touching the production save. Pay particular attention to personal player state, cooldowns and reputation, which are central to the mod’s design.

Balancing an MMO feel without losing Valheim
Keep progression legible
Players should understand why they became stronger. Displayed levels, an XP bar, attribute points and a dedicated quest interface help, but too many simultaneous meters create noise. Choose one primary level number and explain how attributes, classes and equipment relate to it in your server rules.
Recommended Free Tools
Let roles supplement survival mechanics
WayOfTheGods can provide healing, tanking, summons and shapeshifting, yet Valheim’s food, stamina, armor and terrain systems still matter. Design encounters where a class ability solves one problem but does not invalidate preparation, positioning or resource management.
Use quests to direct, not dictate, exploration
Quest hooks are most useful when they point players toward a biome, creature or trade route they could reasonably discover. Avoid making the main world impossible to progress without a particular class or a permanently available party unless that dependency is the explicit point of the server.
Make the economy a parallel path
Contracts, cargo and reputation give builders, explorers and traders a meaningful role. Set cooldowns and rewards so economic progression complements combat progression instead of allowing a new character to bypass every biome and boss requirement.
Which stack should you choose?
| Server goal | Suggested starting stack | Why | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light RPG flavor for friends | Valheim MMORPG Core | Adds XP, levels, attributes and an RPG HUD without requiring a full class economy | Enemy scaling can change the vanilla difficulty curve |
| Quests and social progression | Valheim MMORPG Core + WackyEpicMMOSystem + Groups dependency | Combines progression with a quest button, friends list, group XP and skill requirements | Check overlap and dependencies before using an existing XP system |
| Defined party roles | Valheim MMORPG Core + WayOfTheGods | Provides six classes, 36 subclasses, talents and active abilities | Every client needs the matching major and minor version |
| Trade-driven community world | Stable progression stack + ImmersiveTrader | Adds contracts, cargo, reputation, cooldowns and server-validated personal progression | Test save behavior and dependencies before production |
| Broad MMO feature experiment | EpicMMOSystem on a disposable profile | Includes group XP, custom-mob XP, monster levels, quest hooks and a friends list | Thunderstore marks it deprecated, so maintenance risk is significant |
What Iron Gate’s mod policy means for your server
Iron Gate states that Valheim has no official mod support, while also saying it is happy to see players creating mods. The company explains that mods can notify players when they are running a modded game. That distinction matters: these plugins are community software, not features covered by the game’s official support process.

A practical launch checklist
- Choose one progression provider and document why it was selected.
- Use a dedicated server for a persistent community world.
- Create a clean staging profile and a vanilla fallback profile.
- Back up the world and character data before each major mod change.
- Pin the game, loader, mod and dependency versions where possible.
- Install WayOfTheGods on both server and clients with identical major and minor versions.
- Install ImmersiveTrader and its dependencies on the dedicated server before enabling contracts publicly.
- Test XP, attributes, enemy levels, quests, group rewards, abilities, trader rewards and cooldowns with fresh test characters.
- Distribute one mod manifest and configuration package to every player.
- Announce the server’s difficulty curve, class rules, economy rules and rollback policy.
- Schedule updates, stop the server before backups and test restores on a separate profile.
Bottom line
The most convincing MMORPG-style Valheim server is assembled in layers: Valheim MMORPG Core for measurable progression, WackyEpicMMOSystem for quest and social structure, WayOfTheGods for roles and abilities, and ImmersiveTrader for an economy. Add each component only after the previous one is stable, and treat EpicMMOSystem’s deprecated status and WayOfTheGods’ strict version matching as serious operational constraints. A dedicated server, synchronized client package, pinned versions and tested backups matter as much as the feature list.
