Put planks in the left and right columns, slabs in the top-center and bottom-center slots, and leave the center slot empty. The result is one barrel with 27 storage slots. Unlike a chest, it remains usable when a solid block is directly above it, so it fits under floors, shelves and low ceilings. Barrels also work with hoppers and droppers, can provide an unemployed villager’s fisherman job site, and become dangerous to open near piglins.

Barrel recipe: six planks and two slabs
The current Java and Bedrock recipe uses the same ingredients and pattern. You need a crafting table because the recipe occupies all three rows of a 3×3 grid; a 2×2 personal crafting grid is not large enough.

Materials
| Ingredient | Quantity | What counts |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden planks | 6 | Use planks from one of the ordinary wood families listed below. |
| Wooden slabs | 2 | Use regular wooden slabs; the two slabs do not need to be crafted from a different wood family. |
Current recipe references list oak, spruce, birch, jungle, acacia, dark oak, mangrove, cherry, bamboo, crimson and warped wood as usable families. Petrified oak slabs are excluded from that recipe explanation, so use ordinary slabs if the recipe is not appearing.
Exact 3×3 arrangement
| Plank | Slab | Plank |
| Plank | Empty | Plank |
| Plank | Slab | Plank |
The six planks occupy the upper-left, middle-left, lower-left, upper-right, middle-right and lower-right slots. Place one slab in the top-center slot and one in the bottom-center slot. The center slot must remain empty. A barrel appears in the result box; move it to your inventory.

Fastest gathering route
- Collect logs from any compatible wood type.
- Open your inventory crafting grid or a crafting table and turn logs into planks.
- Use three planks to make six slabs. You need only two of those slabs for the barrel.
- Open a crafting table, fill the grid with the pattern above, and take the barrel from the output slot.
Because the recipe accepts many wood families, you can normally craft a barrel from whichever trees or Nether fungi are already available in your base rather than searching for a particular species.
Java and Bedrock version history
What works now
Current Java and Bedrock recipes match: six planks and two slabs. A Bedrock world running 1.20.10 or later therefore uses the same plank pattern shown above.

Why older Bedrock tutorials show sticks
Older material can be confusing because the official Minecraft article published in 2021 described six planks for Java Edition but six sticks for Bedrock Edition, with two slabs in both versions. Bedrock changed to the plank recipe in version 1.20.10. Treat the sticks wording as historical, not as the current Bedrock recipe. If a video or guide predates 1.20.10, its Bedrock instructions may no longer match your game.
Checking a disputed recipe
When playing a modded client, an older world version or a platform with custom behavior, check the recipe book and the game version shown on the title screen. In an unmodified current Java or Bedrock release, the six-plank, two-slab pattern is the relevant recipe.
How to place and open a barrel
Placement
- Select the barrel in your hotbar.
- Aim at the surface where you want its circular front to face and use the place-block control.
- Aim at the barrel’s front and use the interact control to open its inventory.
The exact button depends on your platform and control settings, but the action is the same one used to open a chest. The official Minecraft description from Duncan Geere (2021) summarizes it as: “Set your barrel down on the floor, and hit the use button on it, and you’ll get an inventory screen that you can use just like a chest.”

Moving items in and out
Inside the barrel interface, ordinary clicks pick up and place stacks, while shift-clicking transfers stacks quickly between your inventory and the container. The barrel’s front is circular, so if the screen does not open, make sure your crosshair is on the barrel rather than an adjacent block and that you are using the platform’s interact command.
Overhead blocks are allowed
A solid block directly above a barrel does not prevent it from opening. This is the defining placement advantage over a chest. You can install barrels under a ceiling, below a floor, inside a shelf or in a one-block-high storage wall while retaining access.
Capacity and storage behavior
Twenty-seven slots
One barrel has 27 inventory slots, the same number as one single chest. The slots accept normal item stacks, so the number of physical items stored depends on each item’s stack size. A barrel does not provide a special increase to stack limits.
Barrels do not form double containers
Two adjacent barrels remain two independent 27-slot containers. They never merge into a 54-slot inventory. If you need one interface with 54 slots, use two chests in a valid double-chest arrangement instead.
When to choose a barrel
- Use one when a ceiling, floor or shelf would block a chest.
- Use several in a wall or compact workshop where every block of headroom matters.
- Use them when separate containers are preferable to one large combined inventory.
Barrel versus chest
| Feature | Barrel | Chest |
|---|---|---|
| Single-container capacity | 27 slots | 27 slots |
| Can a solid block sit directly above it? | Yes; it still opens. | A blocking block can prevent opening. |
| Can two units combine? | No. Each barrel stays separate. | Two chests can combine into a 54-slot double chest. |
| Hopper and dropper compatibility | Hoppers can insert and extract; droppers can feed items. | Also commonly used in item transport, but the barrel’s tight-space placement may be more useful in compact systems. |
| Villager job-site use | An unclaimed barrel can assign a nearby unemployed villager the fisherman profession. | Does not provide that fisherman workstation function. |
Capacity alone does not decide the choice: both single containers hold 27 slots. Pick a barrel when access under a block or independent wall storage matters; pick chests when you can leave clearance and want the option of a 54-slot double container.

Using barrels in compact builds
Under-floor storage
Set barrels into a floor and leave their fronts exposed to the room below or to a maintenance corridor. Because the block above does not disable access, a floor can serve as a complete ceiling over the storage row.
Low-ceiling workshops
In a one- or two-block-high room, a chest can be awkward or unusable if its lid needs open space. A barrel gives the same 27-slot single-container capacity without requiring a clear block above it.
Wall niches and shelves
Barrels can be arranged as separate labeled bays in a wall. This is useful for building materials, tools, food or mob drops when you want each category to have its own 27-slot inventory rather than combining everything into one double chest.
Automation with hoppers and droppers
Hopper input and output
Hoppers can push items into a barrel and pull items out of it. That makes a barrel a compact destination or buffer in an automated storage line. You can place barrels wherever a system needs a container but does not have room for a chest lid to open.
Dropper feeds
Droppers can feed items into barrels. A dropper-based machine can therefore deliver items to a barrel for later manual collection or for another hopper to extract.

Design checks
- Confirm that the hopper or dropper is aimed at the barrel’s container space.
- Leave access to the barrel front if players must inspect or remove items manually.
- Remember that separate barrels stay separate; an automation line must address each barrel independently.
The barrel’s value in automation is spatial: it provides the same 27-slot inventory as a single chest while remaining usable in locations where a chest’s overhead clearance would be a problem.
Villager fisherman workstation
Assigning the profession
An unclaimed barrel can be claimed by a nearby unemployed villager, assigning that villager the fisherman profession. This makes a barrel useful in a village trading area as well as in a storage room.

If you do not want a villager to become a fisherman, keep unclaimed barrels away from unemployed villagers or place them only after the villagers have claimed the job sites you intend to use. A barrel already associated with a villager is not simply a neutral decoration from the village’s perspective.

Piglins become hostile when a player opens or breaks a barrel nearby. Treat a barrel like other containers in a piglin area: check your surroundings before interacting with it.
Safe procedure near piglins
- Look for piglins and make sure you have a safe route away from the container.
- If you must open the barrel, be prepared for hostility immediately after the interaction.
- If you are dismantling a Nether storage station, expect the same reaction when the barrel breaks.
This warning applies even when the barrel is being used as ordinary storage. Its compact shape does not make it exempt from piglin container behavior.

Breaking, collecting and reusing a barrel
Mining speed and drops
An axe breaks a barrel fastest, although other tools and bare hands can mine it. When the barrel is broken, the barrel item and its stored contents drop, allowing you to relocate the entire container and recover what was inside.

Relocation checklist
- Check the surrounding area, especially for piglins in the Nether.
- Break the barrel with an axe when speed matters.
- Collect both the barrel item and the dropped contents before leaving.
- Place the barrel at its new location and restock or reconnect the hoppers and droppers that served it.
Other barrel mechanics
Furnace fuel
A barrel can be used as furnace fuel. The current Minecraft Wiki reference lists one barrel as smelting 1.5 items. This is a secondary use: burning a barrel destroys a storage block, so it is generally more sensible to use spare barrels than a container holding valuable items.
Note-block sound
Place a barrel under a note block to produce the bass instrument sound. This gives barrels a functional role in musical redstone builds as well as in storage.
Natural generation
Barrels can appear in village fisherman structures. Version history also records barrel loot in trial chambers, so finding one in generated structures is possible even before you craft your own.
Troubleshooting common problems
The recipe does not appear
- Use a crafting table with a 3×3 grid.
- Verify that you have six planks, not logs, and two regular slabs.
- Match the pattern exactly: planks on both sides, slabs at top-center and bottom-center, and an empty center.
- If you used petrified oak slabs, replace them with ordinary wooden slabs.
A Bedrock guide tells you to use sticks
Check the guide’s date and your game version. Six sticks was the older Bedrock recipe wording; Bedrock changed to planks in 1.20.10. Follow the current six-plank pattern in a modern release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe barrel will not open
A block above it is not the problem: barrels open under solid blocks. Aim directly at the circular front, use the correct interact control for your platform, and check that another block or entity is not between your crosshair and the barrel.
You expected one large inventory from two barrels
Barrels never merge. Treat each one as its own 27-slot container, or replace the pair with a double chest if a single 54-slot interface is more important than overhead clearance.
Practical decision guide
Choose a barrel when
- Your storage must fit under a solid ceiling, floor or shelf.
- You want separate 27-slot containers arranged in a wall.
- A hopper or dropper needs a compact container endpoint.
- You need a fisherman job site for an unemployed villager.
- You are building in a tight room where chest lids cannot open.
Choose a chest when
- You have clear space above the container.
- You want two units to combine into one 54-slot double chest.
- You prefer a larger single inventory over compact independent storage.
For most bases, using both is practical: barrels handle low-clearance or category-specific storage, while chests provide large combined inventories where room permits.
