To find a lost phone, turn on its built-in recovery service now, enable offline and last-location options where available, and check that the phone appears in the correct account. Also prepare a way to sign in if the missing phone is normally your authentication method. The steps depend on whether you use an iPhone, Android phone, or Samsung Galaxy device.
Set up Find My on iPhone
- Open Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone.
- Turn on Find My iPhone, Find My network, and Send Last Location.
- From another Apple device, open Find My, or visit iCloud.com/find and confirm the iPhone appears under your Apple Account.
Find My network can help locate an offline device. On supported iPhones, it can work for up to 24 hours after the phone is turned off, or up to five hours in power reserve mode; these limits do not apply to every iPhone. Send Last Location automatically sends the phone’s location when its battery becomes critically low. Apple says a last known location may remain available in the Find My app for up to seven days after the device last sent its location through the network. Availability depends on settings and connectivity. See Apple’s iPhone Find My setup guide.

Apple describes its crowdsourced Find My network as involving over a billion Apple devices that can detect a device or accessory over Bluetooth and report an approximate location anonymously and with encryption. That is a network-size description, not a count of currently active devices or a guarantee that a lost phone will be found.
Set up Find Hub on Android
- Open Settings > Security > Find Hub and make sure Allow device to be located is on.
- Go to Settings > Google > All Services > Find Hub > Find your offline devices, then choose an offline-finding option.
- Open Find Hub from another device or browser, sign in to the Google Account used on the phone, and check that the device is listed.
Menu wording can vary by Android version and device. Google’s options include storing encrypted recent locations without network participation, or allowing the phone to participate in finding through nearby Android devices in busy places or everywhere. A PIN, pattern, or password is required for network-assisted offline finding. Google says encrypted recent locations are stored by default; the selected option determines whether the phone participates in network finding. Read Google’s Android preparation guide for current instructions.

Power-off finding is model-dependent. Google says supported phones such as the Pixel 8 series can remain findable for several hours after shutdown if an offline-finding network option is selected and Bluetooth and Location were on when the phone shut down. Do not assume this works on every Android phone. A device hidden in Google Play will not be findable through Find Hub.
Set up Samsung Galaxy recovery
- Add a Samsung account to the phone and enable remote controls.
- On supported devices, open Settings > Security and privacy > Lost device protection.
- Turn on Allow this phone (or tablet) to be found, Send last location, and Offline finding.
- Sign in to your Samsung account from another device and confirm the phone is available through Samsung Find or SmartThings Find, depending on device and service availability.
These steps reflect Samsung’s US support instructions; menus and service availability can differ by region, model, and software. Samsung says a powered-off device may provide only its last known location. Its support page says Track location sends updates every 15 minutes when the feature is used, but that is not a promise of refreshes while a phone is offline. The SmartThings Find support page explains that nearby Samsung community devices can detect supported missing Galaxy devices over Bluetooth and report the last known location anonymously. It also documents an Encrypt Offline Location option, which requires a six-digit PIN to view offline location.

Make sure you can sign in without the phone
Test account access from a separate device before an emergency. If your primary Android phone is used for Google 2-Step Verification, Google advises enabling 2-Step Verification and keeping a backup code or physical security key somewhere safe. Otherwise, the missing phone could prevent you from reaching the recovery service or remotely locking or erasing the device. For Apple and Samsung, verify that you can access the relevant account from another trusted device or browser.
What to do if the phone is missing
- Use the official finding app or website from a separate trusted device and sign in to the account linked to the missing phone.
- If it is likely nearby, use the service’s ring option. If it may have been stolen, mark it lost or lock it, and show a safe contact method if the service supports one.
- Contact authorities about suspected theft. Samsung explicitly warns: “If you are using SmartThings Find or Samsung Find to locate a stolen phone or tablet, do not go directly to the location on the map. Inform the authorities and let them retrieve it for you.”
- Consider remote erase only after weighing it against recovery and backup needs. Samsung advises backing up before a remote factory reset; Apple and Google also document remote erase, subject to account and device conditions.
Apple Lost Mode can lock a device with its passcode or Apple Account password, suspend Apple Pay cards and passes on compatible devices, and show a message with contact information. Samsung describes ringing, locking with a PIN and an optional lock-screen contact message, and remote data erase. Available actions vary by device and service.
