Use the matching decrease icon to dim it. The exact key position depends on the keyboard, so identify it by its symbol rather than assuming a universal Fn shortcut.
First check whether your Samsung Chromebook has a backlit keyboard
Not every Samsung Chromebook includes this hardware. For example, Samsung lists a backlit keyboard on the Galaxy Chromebook 2, while the Galaxy Chromebook 2 360 specification sheet says “Backlit Keyboard: None.” Check your complete model name or model number against its Samsung specifications before trying to enable a feature the device does not have.

Samsung’s keyboard-backlight and ambient-light-sensor diagnostics are also identified as checks for supported models only. The model name matters: similar product names do not guarantee the same keyboard hardware.

Use the Chromebook backlight brightness key
- Look across the top row of your Chromebook keyboard for the keyboard-backlight brightness icons.
- Press the key marked to increase backlight brightness. If the keyboard is lit too brightly, press the decrease-brightness key.
- If the keyboard has RGB backlighting and your model supports color settings, consult Google’s Chromebook keyboard guide for the applicable controls.
Google documents separate increase- and decrease-backlight keys for supported Chromebook hardware, but does not specify one key number that applies to every Samsung Chromebook. Use the icons on your actual keyboard.

If the backlight does not come on
Check Battery Saver
Battery Saver turns off the keyboard backlight. If it is active, turn it off and try the brightness-increase key again. Google explains this behavior in its Battery Saver guidance.
Try Samsung’s sensor check on supported models
Some Samsung Chromebooks use an ambient light sensor. For models that support the check, Samsung suggests covering the sensor near the upper-left area of the keyboard and checking the backlight while pressing keys. If needed, restart the Chromebook to reset the brightness level. Follow the instructions for your exact model in Samsung’s Chromebook diagnostics and troubleshooting guide; this sensor procedure is not universal.

Work through ChromeOS keyboard troubleshooting
If the keyboard is backlit by specification and the basic checks do not help, Google recommends a general keyboard troubleshooting sequence:

- Try the keyboard in guest browsing to check whether the problem is associated with the owner account.
- Consider a hardware reset only after simpler checks. A hardware reset changes hardware-related settings, so follow Google’s instructions for your Chromebook model.
- Consider a factory reset only for an owner-account problem and after understanding that it removes local data. Back up important files first.
- If the keyboard problem remains, contact the manufacturer for model-specific support.

Why Fn+F9 may not work
Samsung’s Fn+F9 instructions and its function-key guidance concern Samsung PCs and notebooks, not a universal Chromebook shortcut. They do not establish that Fn+F9 controls keyboard lighting on a Samsung Chromebook. For ChromeOS, use the backlight icons on the top row and check Samsung’s documentation for the precise Chromebook model.
