You can add a Turn off display command to the Windows 11 desktop right-click menu by importing a registry file that creates a shell-menu entry. It sends Windows a request to turn off the display; it does not shut down or put the PC to sleep. The registry recipe comes from a third-party tutorial, so inspect the file before running it and use the tutorial’s matching add and removal instructions.
What the context-menu command does
The command adds an item to the desktop context menu—not a general File Explorer menu command. When selected, it requests that Windows turn off the display. Microsoft documents the underlying WM_SYSCOMMAND message as 0x0112 and SC_MONITORPOWER as 0xF170; an lParam value of 2 requests that the display be shut off. This is distinct from putting Windows to sleep or shutting down the computer. The API values describe the request, not a guarantee that every PC, driver, foreground application, or display connection will respond identically. Microsoft Learn documents the message and its parameters.

Add the desktop menu item
ElevenForum provides registry-file instructions for creating the Turn off display desktop menu item. Follow one complete version of that tutorial rather than mixing its registry data with command-line fragments from other posts. The tutorial is third-party guidance, and community reports on the page include older Windows 11 builds, so compatibility with every current build is not established. See the ElevenForum add and remove instructions.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Inspect the registry file’s contents before importing it. Confirm that it creates the intended
TurnOffDisplayentry and that its command matches the tutorial version you are following. - Import the inspected file using the tutorial’s instructions, then right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose Show more options if needed to see the classic menu.
- Select Turn off display. This sends a display-off request; it does not select sleep or shutdown.
Remove the menu item
The tutorial’s removal recipe deletes the TurnOffDisplay subkey at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDesktopBackgroundShellTurnOffDisplay. Use the tutorial’s corresponding removal file only after inspecting its contents. Alternatively, remove that specific subkey in Registry Editor if you are comfortable editing the registry; avoid deleting neighboring shell entries. The tutorial includes the removal instructions.

Choose a selected monitor instead
The context-menu request is not a per-monitor targeting control. If you need to select a particular display, NirSoft’s MultiMonitorTool provides command-line controls for monitors. NirSoft notes that its monitor on/off operation requires DDC/CI support, so it is a separate utility-based approach rather than a property of the Windows context-menu verb. NirSoft MultiMonitorTool details.
| Approach | Scope | Dependency | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop context-menu verb | Requests display shutoff; it does not select one monitor. | Registry entry and Windows display command. | Observed behavior can vary by hardware, driver, foreground activity, and display connection. |
| MultiMonitorTool | Can address a selected display. | Optional downloaded utility. | NirSoft says monitor on/off control requires DDC/CI support. |
If the desktop context menu is missing
If shortcut menus are missing throughout the desktop or File Explorer on a managed PC, an administrator policy is one possible cause—not proof that the policy is configured on your computer. Microsoft documents NoViewContextMenu as a policy that removes shortcut menus from the desktop and File Explorer. Ask your organization’s administrator before changing managed settings. Microsoft Learn lists the policy reference.
