Turning off Check apps and files removes Windows’ SmartScreen reputation check and warning before you run an app downloaded from the web. An unfamiliar or known-malicious download may therefore reach the launch step without that particular warning. It does not automatically turn off Microsoft Defender Antivirus, Microsoft Edge SmartScreen, or Windows Firewall.
What the “Check apps and files” switch controls
In Windows Security, the control is at App & browser control > Reputation-based protection > Check apps and files. Microsoft describes it as SmartScreen’s evaluation of the reputation of apps and files you may download from the web. Microsoft’s SmartScreen overview distinguishes this Windows Shell setting from browser protections.

When the Shell check is enabled, Windows can show an interstitial warning before an internet-downloaded app runs if it is unrecognized or known to be malicious. Turning the check off removes that Windows warning layer; it does not make a file safe or change its contents.

- Fewer reputation warnings at launch. A downloaded app with a poor or unestablished reputation may run without this SmartScreen prompt. Microsoft’s policy documentation says that disabling the policy turns SmartScreen off for all users and that users are no longer warned when attempting to run suspicious internet apps. Windows Explorer policy documentation
- Less context about reputation. SmartScreen can flag reported malicious files and programs as well as files that are not well known or frequently downloaded. A warning is a risk signal, not proof that a file is malware. Microsoft’s SmartScreen overview
The policy can also determine whether a user can override a warning. With a “Warn” policy, the user can disregard the prompt; with “Warn and prevent bypass,” the dialog does not offer that override. An organization can manage the setting, so a personal Windows account may not be able to change it.

What remains separate and may stay on
| Protection or setting | What disabling Check apps and files means |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender Antivirus | The SmartScreen switch does not itself disable antivirus. Microsoft documents Defender Antivirus scanning opened or downloaded files when real-time protection is active. Microsoft Defender Antivirus documentation |
| Microsoft Edge SmartScreen | Edge has a separate setting for website and download checks. Disabling Windows Shell file checking does not, by itself, turn off Edge SmartScreen. Microsoft Edge SmartScreen documentation |
| Windows Firewall | This is a different protection and is not switched off by the Shell SmartScreen setting. |
| Windows 11 Smart App Control | This is a separate feature that works alongside antivirus products. Its existence does not mean it will block every file the Shell SmartScreen check might have warned about. Microsoft Smart App Control documentation |
| App Installation Control | This separate setting governs installing apps from outside the Microsoft Store and related prompts; it is not the Shell reputation check. Microsoft Support: app recommendation settings |
Where the protection has limits
SmartScreen is not a guarantee that every unsafe file will be caught. Microsoft says the cited SmartScreen benefits do not protect against malicious files on internal locations or network shares, including UNC and SMB/CIFS shares. Microsoft’s SmartScreen overview
Windows 11’s handling of Mark-of-the-Web files is another distinct detail: Microsoft says Windows Shell SmartScreen continues to evaluate tagged files opened in Explorer, including files downloaded through IE Mode. That Shell behavior is separate from the legacy IE/IE Mode SmartScreen component deprecated on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 and Windows Server 2025. This does not mean that turning off Check apps and files leaves the same Shell check in place. Microsoft Support: SmartScreen protection in Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025

If a SmartScreen warning is why you want to disable it
An “not commonly downloaded” warning can mean a file lacks an established reputation; it does not establish that the file is malicious. Before deciding to run it, consider whether you expected the download, whether it came from the software publisher’s official site, and whether the publisher signature is present and matches the expected publisher. Microsoft recommends checking the source and reputation rather than treating the warning alone as a malware verdict. Microsoft Support: SmartScreen FAQ
