Turn Off Windows 11’s Three Most Visible Promotional Settings

Windows 11’s privacy settings can reduce personalized offers and suggestions, but switching off the advertising ID does not reduce the number of ads you see.

To reduce promotional content in Windows 11, turn off personalized offers, suggested content, and the advertising ID in Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers. These controls affect different things: suggestions and offers can include tips or promotions, while the advertising ID concerns personalized ads in Windows apps. They do not remove every promotion from Windows, apps, or online services.

Start with the privacy settings on your Windows 11 PC

Open Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers and review the controls shown there. This is Microsoft’s current location for these options. If you see Privacy & security > General instead, your Windows version may still use the older page; Microsoft says it is being replaced in more recent Windows 11 versions.

The exact controls and labels can vary with Windows updates and region. Use the labels actually shown on your device rather than assuming every PC has an identical page. Microsoft’s Recommendations & offers privacy guidance describes the newer settings page.

Turn off these three controls

1. Personalized offers

Switch off the option for personalized offers if you do not want Windows to use relevant device and diagnostic information, account information, and information from other Microsoft products and services to tailor offers. Microsoft says these offers can include tips, ads, and recommendations for Microsoft and third-party products and services.

2. Suggested content in Settings

Turn off the option for suggested content in the Settings app if it appears on your Recommendations & offers page. On systems that still show the older General page, look for the corresponding setting there. This reduces suggestions shown in Settings; it is not a control for every recommendation elsewhere in Windows.

3. Advertising ID

Switch off Let apps show me personalized ads by using my advertising ID, or the equivalent wording on your build. This restricts Windows apps’ use of that identifier for personalized advertising. It does not block web cookies, disable every advertising method, or act as a universal ad blocker. Microsoft puts the trade-off plainly: “Turning the advertising ID off will not reduce the number of ads you see, but it may mean that ads are less interesting and relevant to you.” See Microsoft’s [General privacy settings guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/general-privacy-settings-in-windows-7ba9d9d7- ау).
