Turn Off Roku Private Listening: Choose the Right Method

Turn off Roku Headphone Mode using the control for where your headphones connect: the mobile app, remote jack, or Roku Bluetooth settings.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To turn off private listening on Roku, stop it where the headphones are connected: tap the headphones icon in the Roku app, unplug headphones from a compatible remote, or disconnect Bluetooth headphones in Roku settings. Roku’s current interface calls the feature Headphone Mode.

First, identify how you started listening

The off control depends on where the headphones connect. Use the matching method below; you do not need to disable the Roku app or network control.

  • Phone or tablet: You started Headphone Mode in the Roku mobile app.
  • Roku remote: Headphones are plugged into the remote’s headphone jack.
  • Roku Bluetooth: Headphones are paired directly with the Roku streaming device.

Turn off Headphone Mode in the Roku app

  1. Open the Roku app and tap Remote.
  2. Tap the headphones icon again. Roku’s instruction is to tap the icon again to deactivate Headphone Mode. Roku Support explains app Headphone Mode.

If wired headphones are plugged into your phone or tablet and the Roku app is already open, unplugging them also turns the mode off. If you cannot find the headphones icon, update the app and check that your Roku device supports mobile Headphone Mode. The phone or tablet and Roku device must be on the same wireless network for the app connection.

Turn it off when headphones are plugged into the remote

Unplug the headphones completely from the compatible Roku remote’s headphone jack. The TV speakers should resume at their previous volume. This method applies only to remotes with a headphone jack. Roku’s remote instructions describe disabling Headphone Mode.

Disconnect Bluetooth headphones from Roku

Use Settings

  1. Open Settings > Remotes & devices > Wireless headphones.
  2. Select the connected headphones, then choose Disconnect.

Use the playback options menu

While content is playing, press the remote’s Star button to open options. Select Wireless headphones, choose the connected headphones, then select Disconnect. You can also disconnect by powering off the headphones. Roku documents Bluetooth Headphone Mode controls.

If Headphone Mode will not turn off

  • The app icon is missing: Update the Roku app. If the icon still does not appear, the Roku device may not support mobile Headphone Mode.
  • The app cannot connect: Make sure the phone or tablet and Roku device are connected to the same wireless network.
  • Another listening session seems to take over: Mobile app Headphone Mode and remote headphone listening cannot run at the same time. Connecting headphones to a compatible voice remote deactivates mobile sessions. Roku supports up to four mobile devices connected for app Headphone Mode.
  • Headphone Mode is unavailable with an external source: Roku Streambar and certain Roku soundbar products support Headphone Mode only through their built-in streaming player, not content from an external console, Blu-ray player, or cable/satellite box. Check compatibility for your specific model.

Roku’s Headphone Mode troubleshooting guide covers additional compatibility and connection issues.
