Yes, an old Kindle can work as a secondary display, but not like a conventional monitor. A community project called Kindletron periodically sends screenshots from a host computer to a jailbroken Kindle; its documented default refresh interval is 60 seconds. That makes it better for mostly static dashboards, notes, and status information than for video or fast desktop work.
The setup is not a simple cable connection, and “de-Amazoned” overstates what the documented process does: it describes jailbreaking the Kindle and installing third-party display software, not removing all Amazon software or services. The exact steps and whether they work depend on the Kindle model and firmware.

What “using a Kindle as a monitor” actually means
Kindletron describes a wireless, low-refresh display workflow. A host computer takes screenshots of content and serves them over a network; a Kindle client retrieves and displays those images. The Kindle is therefore showing periodic snapshots, not receiving a normal live video signal from the computer.
Kindletron’s documented default is to refresh the screenshot every 60 seconds. That interval is a project setting, not an independent measurement of every possible setup. The project says most content can be displayed, but warns that video performs poorly and has substantial dropped frames. E-ink refresh behavior and Kindle operating-system artifacts also make the result unlike a typical desktop monitor.

Good uses
- A mostly static dashboard or status panel.
- Notes, reference text, or other information you want visible beside a computer.
- Content that remains useful even when it is not refreshed immediately.
Poor uses
- Video, animation, games, or rapidly changing content.
- Work that depends on responsive cursor movement or continuous updates.
- Any task where a one-minute default refresh is too slow.
What the Kindletron setup requires
The Kindletron project lists two central prerequisites: a jailbroken Kindle with Kindle Unified Application Launcher (KUAL) installed, and a host computer that can run the screenshot and web-serving workflow. Its example host is a Linux computer, such as a Raspberry Pi. The project says the approach can be adapted to Mac OS or Microsoft WSL if the computer can take screenshots and run an HTTP server.
The documented host workflow includes a VNC desktop instance, screenshot scripts, and an HTTP server. The Kindle-side setup involves copying extension files over USB and configuring the Kindle script with the host URL. Follow the project’s current, model-specific instructions rather than treating this overview as a universal installation recipe.

You do not necessarily need to buy a Raspberry Pi: a suitable computer you already own may be able to host the workflow. A USB cable is used in the described setup to copy files, but connector type varies by Kindle model, and you may already have a compatible data cable.
Check the exact Kindle before choosing a method
There is no evidence here that every older Kindle is compatible with Kindletron or with the same jailbreak process. Identify the exact generation and firmware first, then verify compatibility against current community documentation for that device. Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader User and Quick Start Guides index can help locate a manual by model; it does not confirm jailbreak or third-party display compatibility.

Historical projects illustrate why model-specific instructions matter. The Raspberry Pi Foundation’s 2013 account of Kindleberry Pi describes an earlier Kindle 3 setup that used cables and a later Paperwhite version built for wireless use. It reports that the Paperwhite refreshed faster than the older keyboard Kindle, but this is historical project context, not a current, controlled comparison across Kindle models.
A separate Kindle DX walkthrough uses USB networking and VNC software. Treat that as legacy documentation for that model, not a general recipe for other Kindles.

These accounts describe different generations and implementations, so their connection and refresh observations should not be read as a head-to-head performance test.

Protect the screenshots served by the host
Kindletron warns that, in the described configuration, anyone who can reach the server may be able to view its screenshots. Those images could expose whatever content is on the host display. Run the service only on a trusted network or restrict access with network controls; the project also discusses using an SSH tunnel for sensitive applications. Do not expose the screenshot server to an untrusted network without appropriate protection.

The project also warns that Kindle OS elements, including the clock and Wi-Fi symbol, may remain visible over the delivered image. These artifacts are part of the practical trade-off, not necessarily a problem with the screenshot content itself.
Does it really take less than an hour?
No general build-time estimate is established by the project documentation or the historical accounts. Setup time depends on the Kindle generation, firmware, jailbreak eligibility, host configuration, and familiarity with the required tools. A claim that a particular build took under an hour should be presented only as a verified account of that specific device and setup—not as a promise for other readers.
