Set the app as the phone’s home app, choose a dashboard for that location, and enable the screen-on setting if you want it to stay visible. That makes an existing handset a useful reuse option, but it does not prove it is better than every inexpensive tablet: compare the actual devices for legibility, software support, fit and access to power.
Check whether the phone is a suitable candidate
Home Assistant’s Companion app getting-started documentation lists Android 6 or later and Home Assistant 0.104.0 or later as requirements: Getting Started. App support can change over time, so check whether the current app is available for your particular handset and Android version before planning an installation.

That check matters especially for older devices. In a July 23, 2025 article, Home Assistant said Android 5.0 and 5.1 would stop receiving new app updates as dependencies moved to Android 6.0/API 23. The article also said that less than 0.3% of installs were on Android versions below API 23; that figure describes the app’s install base in that context, not how well old phones perform as dashboards: Home Assistant’s Android Companion app update.

Next, assess the physical setup. A phone that is supported but difficult to read from the room, awkward to mount in the needed orientation, or inconvenient to power may not be a good always-visible control panel. Home Assistant documents wall-mounted dashboard use, but the device’s display, dimensions and power arrangement are specific to your handset and location.

Set up Home Assistant as the phone’s home app
- Install the Home Assistant Companion app and connect it to your Home Assistant instance using your credentials. The getting-started guide covers the app setup.
- In the Companion app settings, choose the Home Assistant home app or launcher option, then set Home Assistant as the Android device’s home app. Afterward, pressing the Home button returns to Home Assistant. The exact Android system prompt or wording can vary by device; see Android Home App (launcher).
- Create a dashboard with the controls that make sense for the phone’s location—for example, the lights and climate controls used in that room—rather than exposing every control in your home.
- Set that dashboard as the default for the user used on the phone. Home Assistant notes that a separate user can have its own default dashboard, which is useful when different kiosk devices need different views. Its launcher documentation explains the dedicated-dashboard approach.
- If the display should remain visible, enable Keep screen on in the Companion app settings. The setting prevents sleep while the WebView activity is active; it is not a guarantee that every phone is suitable for continuous operation. See the Android WebView documentation.
Phone or cheap tablet? Compare the device you have
Home Assistant’s documentation describes dedicated dashboards and wall-mounted devices, including tablet-style use, but does not provide a measured comparison of phones and inexpensive tablets. There is therefore no evidence-based universal winner. Judge the specific handset and tablet you could use on the factors that affect this installation:
- Readability: Can you read the dashboard at the intended viewing distance and in the room’s lighting?
- Software support: Can the device run a currently available Companion app version?
- Mount and orientation: Does the screen fit the chosen position, and can the device sit in the orientation your dashboard needs?
- Power access: Is there a practical way to supply power where the device will be installed?
An old phone is compelling when it already meets those needs and can be repurposed without buying another screen. A larger tablet may be preferable if its display is easier to read or it fits the location better. Neither conclusion follows from the device category alone.

Before mounting it, verify the installation
- Confirm the Android version and current Companion app availability.
- Open the intended dashboard and check its readability from the normal standing or seated position.
- Check the phone’s dimensions, mounting orientation and access to a power source before choosing a wall mount.
- Test the home-app behavior and screen-on setting in the intended location before treating the handset as a permanent display.
Home Assistant’s documentation does not establish the long-term battery or thermal suitability of any particular phone left powered with its screen on. The Companion app’s Keep screen on option addresses sleep behavior while its WebView activity is active; it is not a device-specific power-management assessment.
