A transcript API can turn a YouTube URL or video ID into text and timestamped segments in one request—but “any video” depends on whether the service can access captions or transcribe the audio. If it has to run speech recognition asynchronously, the first request may return a job status rather than a finished transcript.
What one API call can—and cannot—do
A transcript service may accept a YouTube video URL or its 11-character ID and return transcript text with segments marked by start and end times. Those timestamps are useful both for subtitles and for RAG: an application can keep each passage linked to the point in the video where it was spoken.

The phrase “one API call” describes the simplest successful path, not a guarantee of an immediate result for every video. A provider may retrieve existing captions, require a particular language or source option, or use automatic speech recognition (ASR) when captions are unavailable. In the latter case, processing may continue asynchronously, requiring a later poll or webhook notification. Availability depends on provider access, video caption availability, and the provider’s fallback behavior.

Third-party transcript endpoint
A third-party endpoint can be designed to accept a video URL or ID and return a structured transcript. For example, YouTube-Transcript.dev’s API documentation describes a single-video transcription request, timestamped segments, and an ASR fallback path. That documentation is an example of a workflow, not evidence that every provider supports the same request, output formats, or behavior.

Before implementing a service, check its current documentation for accepted URL and ID forms, authentication, language options, caption retrieval, ASR fallback, response format, rate limits, and asynchronous job handling. Do not assume that JSON segments can be requested as SRT or VTT unless the service explicitly documents those outputs.
Google’s authorized caption-track download
Google’s YouTube Data API offers a different route: downloading a caption track you are authorized to access. Its caption download endpoint takes a caption-track ID, requires authorization, and supports SRT and VTT. Google states, “This request requires authorization with at least one of the following scopes.” This is not documented as an unrestricted transcript endpoint for arbitrary public videos.
Make a transcript request
For a provider that documents a single-video transcription endpoint, the request generally supplies the video identifier, authentication, and any supported language or source options. The following example reflects the documented YouTube-Transcript.dev pattern; verify its current endpoint and request schema before using it.

The API documentation describes accepting a YouTube URL or 11-character video ID. The response may contain transcript text and timestamped segments; inspect the actual response schema and status before treating a request as complete. Keep API keys on the server side rather than embedding them in a public web page or client application.
Handle captions and asynchronous ASR correctly
Caption retrieval and speech recognition are separate paths. A provider may return existing captions quickly, but if it must transcribe audio, it may return a processing status and job identifier. In that case, follow the provider’s documented polling endpoint or webhook flow; do not treat the initial status response as transcript content or describe the full process as one completed synchronous call.

See the project README for its published details. These figures should not be generalized to other transcript APIs.
Turn timestamped segments into RAG-ready chunks
For retrieval-augmented generation, retain each segment’s text and timing together rather than flattening the transcript into one undifferentiated string. A minimal record might look like this:
{
"video_id": "VIDEO_ID",
"start": 42.1,
"end": 55.8,
"text": "The speaker's words for this segment."
}
Use the provider’s actual field names and timing units. When creating larger retrieval chunks, combine adjacent segments as needed while keeping the earliest start and latest end time. That lets an application attach a result to a video location and gives a reader a way to check the source in context. The title-matching DEV Community result describes this use of chunks with start and end times; it does not establish additional implementation details.

Get SRT or VTT only when the service supports it
SRT and WebVTT are subtitle formats with timed cues. A structured JSON transcript is not automatically either format. If a service explicitly returns SRT or VTT, use that documented output. If it returns only timed JSON segments, convert them only after confirming that the timing and text fields are sufficient and that your converter emits valid format syntax.
Google documents SRT and VTT for authorized caption-track downloads. The inspected YouTube-Transcript.dev documentation establishes timestamped transcript structures, but does not establish SRT or VTT output for that service. For that workflow, do not promise those formats without verifying current documentation.

Check the result before using it
- Confirm the response is complete rather than an asynchronous processing status.
- Check that every segment has usable text and start/end times before indexing it for RAG.
- Verify the returned language and whether the text is original captions, translated captions, or ASR output.
- Test the exact SRT or VTT output if subtitles are required; do not infer format support from JSON timestamps.
- For Google’s caption-download method, confirm you have the required authorization and the caption-track ID.
