Tunarr is the Plex-compatible add-on behind the idea of bringing back old-fashioned channel surfing: it turns media you already have into custom, scheduled, live-style channels. Instead of picking an episode on demand, you can tune in and let a lineup play. Tunarr supplies no TV programming itself; it organizes content from your own media library.
What Tunarr does—and what “add-on” means here
Tunarr is self-hosted software, not a cable package, Plex plugin that unlocks a new catalog, or physical TV tuner. You connect it to a supported media source, build channels and schedules, and watch through Plex or another compatible client. Tunarr describes its purpose as creating live TV channels from media on Plex or Jellyfin servers: Tunarr’s project homepage.

The appeal is a different way to use a library. On-demand viewing asks you to choose a title or episode; a scheduled channel lets you tune in without deciding what to watch first. You choose the material and channel structure, while Tunarr handles the live-style presentation.

- Connect a media source. Tunarr supports Plex, Jellyfin, Emby, and local media, according to its setup documentation. A source provides the programming catalog and metadata; Tunarr does not provide licensed shows or movies.
- Give it access to the files. Tunarr needs usable access to the paths where your media lives. Its Plex media-source guide describes connecting through Plex sign-in and server discovery, or configuring a server manually. It recommends making media paths visible to Tunarr, using shared paths or path replacements when server and container layouts differ. Reading directly from disk may improve performance and stability while reducing network activity, according to the guide.
- Build channels and schedules. Select media and arrange it into the custom channel lineup you want. The result is scheduled programming drawn from your library rather than a new streaming catalog.
- Choose a playback route. Tunarr can present itself to Plex as an emulated HDHomeRun tuner, which Plex can discover. Compatible IPTV players can instead use an M3U playlist. See Tunarr’s client documentation for supported client approaches.
What you need to run it
Tunarr is available as a Docker image or standalone binaries. It uses FFmpeg to normalize channel video and audio streams. The setup documentation lists FFmpeg 6.1 as the minimum known supported version and recommends 7.1.1; these version requirements can change, so consult the current setup page when installing. The installation page says Docker images include FFmpeg 7.1.1, while standalone installs need their own FFmpeg installation.

| Option | Programming source | Hardware and setup | Control over lineup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tunarr with Plex | Your media library | Self-hosted software; Tunarr emulates a tuner for Plex discovery. Requires FFmpeg and access to media paths. | You create channels and schedules from your library. |
| Plex free streaming Live TV | Plex’s ad-supported streaming channel catalog | Plex says no special hardware or Plex Pass is needed for its free streaming channels. | You choose from Plex’s offered lineup. |
| Plex OTA Live TV/DVR | Over-the-air broadcasts received locally | Requires a compatible physical tuner and antenna connected to Plex Media Server; recording broadcasts requires Plex Pass, according to Plex’s Live TV FAQ. | Channels depend on local broadcasts and the configured tuner. |
These are separate workflows. Plex’s physical tuner and antenna requirements apply to receiving local broadcasts, not to Tunarr’s software-emulated channels. Likewise, Plex’s free streaming service is distinct from both Tunarr and OTA DVR.

Who should consider Tunarr?
- It may fit if you already maintain a media library and want a scheduled, channel-surfing way to watch it through Plex or another compatible client.
- It may not fit if you want Tunarr to supply shows, movies, or licensed live channels; it builds channels from sources you connect.
- Plan for setup if your media server and Tunarr run in separate containers or machines, because file-path access must work across that arrangement.
- Compare alternatives by source and effort: Plex’s free streaming Live TV is simpler if its channel catalog is what you want, while OTA viewing is for local antenna broadcasts and entails separate tuner hardware.
