The Benefits of Using an E Ink Tablet Over an iPad

E Ink tablets can be a focused choice for reading, handwriting, and document review. iPads are better suited to color, apps, media, and general-purpose use.

An E Ink tablet can be a better fit than an iPad when your main tasks are reading, handwriting, and marking up documents—and you want a reflective screen and a more focused device. An iPad is the stronger choice for color, apps, web browsing, and general-purpose computing. The right option depends on what you need the tablet to do, not just how its screen looks.

What an E Ink tablet offers that an iPad does not

A reflective reading surface

E Ink displays reflect ambient light rather than working like a conventional tablet screen that shines light toward you. That can make text feel more like a page and reduce glare in suitable lighting. The experience depends on the device and environment: some E Ink models have their own lighting, and reMarkable says its Paper Pro has a backlight. Check the lighting design of the specific model you are considering. reMarkable explains how its reflective display works.

This is a screen-design difference, not proof of a health benefit. The cited product information does not establish that E Ink prevents eye strain or protects eyesight, and comfort varies between people.

Fewer built-in distractions on some models

Some E Ink tablets deliberately limit what you can do. reMarkable says its paper tablet has no app store or web browser by design, while Amazon describes its new Kindle Scribe as having no distracting apps or notifications. Those choices can make a device feel more like a dedicated reading or writing tool, but they do not prove that every user will concentrate better. E Ink devices vary: some Android-based models offer broader app access.

A device centered on reading and handwriting

Several E Ink devices combine reading with handwritten notes, journals, and document markup. Amazon says Kindle Scribe supports writing in books and journaling, as well as importing PDFs, Word documents, and other formats supported by Send to Kindle. The exact workflow and format support depend on the model and current software; check Amazon’s Kindle Scribe FAQ for current details.

reMarkable, by contrast, positions its products as digital paper for writing and focused document work. A Kindle-oriented reader and a dedicated digital notebook can differ substantially in book access, apps, export options, and supported documents. Confirm that a particular device handles the files and transfers you rely on.

  • Dark, gray, or wrongfully believed low resolution screen : All Eink products used Kaleido 3 color e-ink technology, which currently has inherent limitations and share the same darker or grayer screen than LCD/LED ones. This is a characteristic of all e-ink products, not a defect. If it doesn't meet your expectations, you may return the product under our return policy. However, please note this is not considered a product fault.
  • Over 99% of mobile apps are optimized for LCD/OLED screens with: High refresh rate expectations; Color-rich interfaces; Animation-heavy designs; These design choices conflict with E Ink's natural strengths in static content display.Energy Efficiency Trade-off‌: E Ink relies on electrophoretic particles that physically move to form images, resulting in slower refresh rates, makes it inherently unsuitable for conventional app interfaces designed for always-powered displays. If the buyers are not satisfied, they can apply for return or exchange, but it cannot be regarded as a malfunction.

Where an iPad remains the better fit

Apps and general-purpose work

An iPad is the more flexible tablet if you want to move among apps, browse the web, communicate, create, and handle varied work in one device. Apple’s iPad (A16) specifications describe its hardware and iPadOS features; capabilities vary by iPad model.

Color, media, and responsiveness

If you regularly view photos, watch video, use animation, scroll quickly, or need vivid color, an iPad’s conventional display is generally a better match. E Ink is most compelling when your material is mainly text, handwriting, and diagrams and you are comfortable with a more restrained display.

Reading across apps and the web

An iPad can suit readers who depend on a variety of reading apps, websites, or richer document tools. E Ink may suit someone whose reading happens mostly in a device’s supported library and document workflows. Before choosing, check the exact formats, transfer methods, and apps available on the E Ink model—not just whether it can display books or PDFs.

Compare the trade-offs against your routine

What matters most E Ink tablet is more likely to fit if… iPad is more likely to fit if…
Reading surface You prefer reflective text and reduced glare in suitable lighting. You need a responsive, full-color screen for mixed media.
Focus A limited feature set and fewer notifications suit your reading or writing routine. You want to switch among apps, browsing, communication, and creative tools.
Handwriting Notes, journaling, and document markup are central tasks. You want handwriting alongside broader drawing, productivity, or media apps.
Documents Your books and files fit the device’s supported formats and transfer options. You depend on varied reading apps, web content, or richer document workflows.
Battery routine You value long stretches of low-power reading and writing between charges. You prioritize versatility and are comfortable recharging more often.
Color and motion Most of your work is text and diagrams, and a restrained display is acceptable. Photos, video, animation, fast scrolling, and vivid color matter.

reMarkable: focused digital paper

reMarkable describes its tablets as reflective E Ink devices that use ambient light, and says its paper tablet has no app store or web browser by design. Its overview describes battery life in weeks as a manufacturer claim. The company’s Paper Pro feature page identifies a color display based on E Ink Gallery 3 and claims up to two weeks of battery life. Neither battery figure should be treated as a like-for-like result: usage, lighting, Wi-Fi, syncing, and writing activity affect endurance.

How to decide before you buy

  1. List your main tasks. If most sessions are reading, handwriting, or document review, compare E Ink models. If you need a broad app ecosystem, color media, and varied tablet functions, start with iPad models.
  2. Check the exact content workflow. Verify book availability, file formats, import and export options, and any apps or services you need on the specific E Ink model.
  3. Consider the screen in your lighting. Reflective E Ink uses ambient light, and device lighting features differ. Think about where you read and whether you need a backlight or other built-in illumination.
  4. Judge distraction limits honestly. A deliberately limited device may help you keep reading or writing, but if you need a browser, messaging, or work apps close at hand, those limits can become friction.
  5. Compare charging claims cautiously. Battery estimates from different manufacturers are not directly comparable unless usage and test conditions match. Consider your own mix of reading, writing, lighting, Wi-Fi, and syncing.
