Install it with cargo install tuidict, then use its Download page to add a dictionary and its Translation page to look up words. Its project README describes the search as fast, but publishes no independent performance measurements.
What tuidict does
The project describes tuidict as a “TUI dictionary with support for multiple language pairs from FreeDict.” It offers live search as you type, trie-based prefix search, binary caching, and in-app dictionary downloading and management. These are features claimed by the project, not independently benchmarked results. See the tuidict repository and README.

Which language pairs are available?
Tuidict draws dictionary data from FreeDict, whose repository includes language-pair directories such as English–French, English–Hindi, English–Japanese, and English–Turkish. Those examples show the range of FreeDict material; they are not a complete inventory of dictionaries currently offered in tuidict. Check the app’s Download page for its current selection, or consult FreeDict’s official documentation and dictionary repository.

Does tuidict work offline?
The README documents downloading dictionaries and storing dictionary and cache files locally, but it does not explicitly promise that lookups work offline or explain whether any functions require a network connection. Local storage alone does not establish complete offline behavior, so the documentation reviewed here is not enough to confirm it.
Where tuidict stores its files
The README lists these paths:
-
Configuration:
~/.config/tuidict/config.json -
Dictionary files and caches:
~/.local/share/tuidict/dictionaries/
These are the paths stated in the project README; do not assume they apply unchanged on other operating systems.
Licensing: app versus dictionary data
The tuidict repository shows an MIT license for the application. FreeDict dictionary data has separate licensing terms: FreeDict says its dictionaries are available under free and open-source licenses, most are GPL-licensed, and each dictionary’s terms are recorded in its TEI header. Check the terms for the particular dictionary before modifying, extending, or bundling it; the app’s license does not automatically cover dictionary data. Details are in FreeDict’s documentation.

What the documentation does not establish
The reviewed README does not provide independently measured search speeds, tested platform coverage, or a guarantee of offline operation. Treat “fast” as the project’s description rather than a verified benchmark. The documented workflow requires no specific hardware purchase.
