If Tubi plays with sound on your screen but your saved screen recording is silent, the most likely cause is content protection. Tubi uses Microsoft PlayReady to protect some licensed movies and series, and Android’s platform documentation confirms that an app can stop other apps from capturing its audio, which leaves the recording silent. That explains the pattern, but it does not prove that every silent Tubi recording has this cause. The steps below help you separate a playback problem from a recording restriction.
Why the recording is silent while the show plays
Tubi’s DRM help page says that some content owners use PlayReady to protect copyrighted movies and series, and that Tubi uses PlayReady for certain content. The same page says content owners may require delivery restrictions for protected content on specified devices or PC software applications when protection fails.

Android Developers’ “Capture video and audio playback” documentation describes the platform side. An audio app can prevent other apps from recording its audio, and the documentation states: “Your app must respond appropriately, otherwise it will continue to record audio silence or a black video stream.” That is a general platform statement, not a Tubi-specific one, so it explains how a restriction can produce silence without confirming how Tubi applies it on every device.

- Play the same title in Tubi without recording, at a normal volume, and confirm whether you hear dialogue and music.
- If the title is silent in normal playback, treat it as a playback or audio problem and move to Step 2.
- If it is audible in normal playback but silent only in the recording, skip to the section on protected audio.
Step 2: Fix playback and DRM errors
Tubi’s troubleshooting guidance for DRM and playback errors suggests these checks, in this order:
- Update the Tubi app to the latest version from your app store.
- Close the app fully and reopen it.
- Restart the device.
- Try a different movie or show, since some errors affect only one title.
- On Android, clear the Tubi app cache from the device’s app settings, then sign in and play again.
These steps address playback and DRM errors. They are not a documented way to restore audio in a screen recording.

If you cast to a TV or use a connected streaming device
When the sound is missing on the TV rather than on your phone or tablet, Tubi’s connected-device guidance points to the cable and the chain of equipment:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Reconnect the HDMI cable, or replace it with a different one.
- Move the cable to a different HDMI port on the TV.
- Temporarily connect the streaming device directly to the TV, bypassing any receiver or stereo component, to see whether the audio returns.
These checks address playback compatibility errors in connected setups. They do not explain missing audio in a recording made on a phone.

When playback is audible but the recording is silent
If Steps 1 and 2 show that Tubi plays normally, the silence is most likely the capture restriction described above. The sources reviewed do not establish a supported Tubi setting, app option, or accessory that overrides it. Do not use DRM-bypass tools or methods, and do not expect a different recorder to capture protected audio that the platform blocks.
The table below summarises how to read each symptom.

| Symptom | Most likely meaning | Documented next step |
|---|---|---|
| Silent during normal Tubi playback | Playback or audio problem, or a DRM error | Update, restart, try another title, clear Android cache |
| Audible during playback, silent in the saved recording | Probable capture restriction on protected content | No supported fix is documented; accept the limitation or use Tubi’s own content features |
| Silent on the TV, sound fine on the phone | Cable, port, or receiver chain issue | Reconnect or replace HDMI, change port, connect directly to TV |
| An error code appears | Specific DRM or playback error | Look up the code in Tubi’s error code guidance and follow its listed steps |
What does not fix protected audio
- Capture cards, adapters, or cables. These are not documented as a way to capture protected Tubi audio in a screen recording.
- Third-party screen recorders. Tubi’s guidance and Android’s documentation do not promise that another recorder will capture audio that a restriction blocks.
- Audio accessories or microphones placed near a speaker. A microphone-based capture is a workaround for sound, not a fix for the recording’s audio track, and it is not a documented Tubi method.
What the sources do and do not establish
Tubi’s help pages cover DRM playback errors, device compatibility, and general video troubleshooting. They do not publish a device-by-device or app-version policy for screen recording, so the article cannot say that Tubi always mutes recordings or that every recording failure is caused by DRM. The Android documentation describes a general platform mechanism, not how Tubi behaves on iOS, in browsers, on TVs, or on every Android device.
