To stop Proton VPN from renewing, cancel the subscription in the account or store where you bought it. Getting money back is a separate step. As of October 2026, Proton says a refund may be possible only for subscriptions started within the last 30 days, and the route you use depends on where you paid. Cancelling first is still the right order, because it prevents another charge while you sort out the refund.
Cancelling and requesting a refund are two different actions
Cancellation tells Proton not to renew your plan. It does not return money for the period you have already paid for. A refund is a request you make afterwards, and Proton describes it as something eligible subscribers “may be able to request” rather than an automatic right. Keep the two steps in mind as you go through the sections below.

- Where you cancel depends on the original purchase: a Proton account for website purchases, or the Apple or Google subscription settings for in-app purchases.
- Where you ask for a refund also depends on that purchase channel, as the table further down shows.
- Payment method matters. Proton says some payment types cannot be refunded through it at all.
Cancel the subscription by purchase channel
Use the path that matches how you originally paid. Cancelling from the wrong place, such as deleting the app on a phone while an App Store subscription is still active, does not stop the renewal.

- Sign in at account.protonvpn.com.
- Open Subscription.
- Scroll to Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.
- Select a cancellation reason and submit it. Proton states that cancellation is not finalised until this final step is completed, so do not close the page before you see the submission go through.

Bought through Apple’s App Store
- On the Apple device you used to subscribe, open Settings.
- Tap your Apple Account name.
- Go to Subscriptions, then select Proton VPN.
- Cancel the subscription there.
Proton tells App Store customers to cancel in this way before requesting a refund through Apple’s report-a-problem website.
Bought through Google Play
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap your profile or avatar.
- Go to Subscriptions and choose Proton VPN.
- Follow the cancellation steps shown there.
Google Play cancellation is handled by Google, so the refund route is also split between Proton and Google, as explained below.

Refund eligibility and who to contact
The 30-day window
Proton’s official cancellation guide says subscribers who started a subscription within the last 30 days may be able to request a refund under its 30-day money-back guarantee. The wording is conditional, so a request is not guaranteed to be approved. Count from the purchase date, not from the date you decide to cancel. If the window has passed, Proton’s published guidance does not describe a refund route for that payment.

Proton’s support contact page is at protonvpn.com/support/contact. Google Play purchasers can use either route. Proton’s guidance does not say which one it will process faster.

Payment methods that cannot be refunded through Proton
Proton states on its payment methods page that subscriptions paid by cash or bank transfer are not refundable. The page is at protonvpn.com/support/payment-options. Do not assume that your bank or payment provider will reverse a transfer on Proton’s behalf; Proton’s published policy covers only what Proton itself will refund.

These are Proton’s own estimates, not measured averages. The support page does not state a publication date or describe how the figures were gathered, so treat them as a guide to what to expect rather than a guarantee.
What cancelling does and does not change
After you cancel, paid VPN features stay available until the current billing period ends. At that point, Proton says the account moves to Proton Free. Cancelling does not delete your Proton Account, and it does not remove access to Proton’s free services.

Do not expect a prorated credit for unused time if you cancel outright. Proton’s credits guidance, at protonvpn.com/support/vpn-credit-proration, says that moving entirely to Proton Free does not generate credits. Remaining time is turned into credits only in certain paid-plan changes.
If the steps do not work
If the cancellation page will not complete, or a store shows the subscription as still active after you have followed the steps above, contact Proton support through the form at protonvpn.com/support/contact. If you prefer email, Proton says you can write to [email protected].
When you write, include:
- the email address on your Proton Account;
- where you bought the subscription (website, Apple App Store or Google Play);
- the approximate date of purchase, so the 30-day window can be checked;
- the payment method you used.
Proton’s own wording on cancellation
Proton VPN’s official cancellation page states: “When you cancel a Proton VPN subscription, it disables all future plan renewals so you won’t be charged again.” The same page says: “Canceling a Proton VPN subscription doesn’t delete your account.” Both statements come from Proton’s support documentation, not from a named spokesperson.
