TRRS stands for tip, ring, ring, sleeve: the four conductive sections on a phone-style audio plug. It commonly carries stereo audio and a microphone signal, but the acronym does not specify a universal wiring arrangement. A plug can fit a jack and still fail to support its microphone or inline controls.
What does TRRS stand for?
The letters name the plug’s four metal contacts, in order from the end: one tip, two rings, and one sleeve. The insulating bands visible between those contacts are separators; they are not the rings in “TRRS.”

A common use is a headset connection carrying stereo playback and a microphone signal. Some configurations also support inline call controls. By contrast, TRS is commonly used for audio without a headset microphone connection. These are typical applications, not guarantees: what a cable actually carries depends on its wiring and the connected device.

Why can two TRRS connections be wired differently?
TRRS describes the number and order of contacts, not the signal assigned to each one. Two common four-pole arrangements are standard (often called CTIA) and OMTP. Texas Instruments’ March 2016 application report shows the difference: standard places ground on the second ring and microphone on the sleeve, while OMTP places microphone on the second ring and ground on the sleeve. Because the microphone and ground positions change, matching the four-contact shape alone does not establish that a headset and device will exchange every signal correctly.

How to check TRRS compatibility
- Check the jack layout. Find out whether the device has one combined headset jack or separate headphone and microphone jacks, and whether the plug is TRS or TRRS.
- Identify the function you need. Playback, microphone input, and inline controls are separate functions; a connection may provide playback without supporting the mic or buttons.
- Check the wiring standard. Confirm whether the headset and device expect CTIA, OMTP, or another device-specific arrangement. Do not infer the pinout from the plug’s appearance.
- Verify any adapter or splitter for the exact setup. An adapter must suit both the source and the headset, including the jack layout and wiring. Sennheiser cautions that adapters between TRRS and other formats can be unpredictable; consult its headphone support guidance and the device documentation rather than assuming any adapter will preserve all functions.
TRS vs. TRRS: what is the difference?

These uses are common patterns, not a substitute for checking the device’s supported functions and wiring.
Does a TRRS plug always work if it fits?
No. Physical fit confirms only that the plug can enter the jack. A different pinout or jack layout can prevent microphone input or inline controls from working, even when playback works. Check the headset and device requirements before choosing a cable or adapter.
