In most browser video trimmers, Fast and Precise are different processing strategies, not two levels of the same cut. Fast usually copies the file’s existing compressed audio and video packets and changes only where the clip starts and stops, so the boundary can land on the nearest point the file allows rather than the exact frame you selected. Precise usually decodes the footage and encodes it again, which lets the tool place the boundary on the chosen frame, but takes more processing and creates another round of compression. The exact behavior depends on the tool and the file format.
What Fast mode is doing
Fast is generally a stream copy. FFmpeg’s documentation defines stream copy as copying packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding them. Because the pixels are never reconstructed, the operation is quick and the copied data is not recompressed. The same documentation says stream copy may not work for every combination of source and output container.

The trade-off follows directly from that method. A filter needs decoded frames to operate on, so a stream-copied cut cannot apply filters, and the cut is bounded by how the source file is organized.
Why a Fast cut can start before the frame you chose
Most compressed video formats cannot jump to an arbitrary frame. They can start decoding cleanly only at certain seek points, typically keyframes. FFmpeg’s documentation for the -ss option states: “Note that in most formats it is not possible to seek exactly, so ffmpeg will seek to the closest seek point before position.” When a tool copies the stream from that seek point, the material between the seek point and your chosen time is included in the output.

This is the main reason a Fast clip may begin a little early. The extra footage is not an error in the trimmer; it is the earliest starting point the stream can legally begin from without re-encoding.
What Precise mode is doing
Precise commonly means decoding the source and encoding the selected section again. FFmpeg’s documentation describes transcoding as decoding followed by encoding, and notes that it tends to be computationally expensive and in most cases degrades the stream’s quality.

Because the tool reconstructs the frames, it can start the output at the frame you selected. Two points are worth keeping in mind:
- The processing cost scales with the work done. Re-encoding takes more time and CPU or GPU effort than copying packets, and the sources reviewed do not give a benchmark for a browser trimmer.
- The quality change depends on settings and source. Re-encoding creates another generation of compression. Whether that is visible depends on the encoder’s quality settings and the original footage, and the sources reviewed do not quantify the loss.
Container timing edits and why players disagree
Some browser trimmers avoid re-encoding by using a container-level timing trick instead. Anjin Media describes its Fast mode as copying the streams and using an MP4 edit list to hide the pre-roll from the keyframe before the requested start. An edit list tells a compliant player to skip the early frames, so the clip begins where you asked.

The consequence is that the correct start depends on the playback software. A player that honors the edit list shows the trimmed start; a player that ignores it may show the earlier frames. This is documented behavior of that tool’s approach, not a rule that every browser trimmer uses the same mechanism, and it is not a guarantee about every player.
Mode names and format limits differ by tool
The labels are not standardized. FXI Studio’s documentation describes Fast and Exact modes. It documents Fast as stream copy for MP4 and MOV files and states that WebM always uses Exact mode. Check the specific trimmer’s format notes before assuming that Fast or Precise will behave the same way on every file type.

Anjin Media’s Fast mode also depends on MP4 edit lists, so its behavior is tied to MP4 output. FXI Studio’s documentation is the reference for its own format rules; neither source establishes how other trimmers handle these cases.

Choose Fast when speed matters, when you want to avoid re-encoding, and when a boundary on the nearest keyframe is acceptable. Choose Precise when a specific frame matters, such as the first frame of a word, a gesture, or a shot, or when the clip must play consistently in software that may not honor timing metadata.

Troubleshooting a Fast clip that starts early
- Play the exported file in a second player. If it starts at the correct frame in one player and early in another, the difference is likely in how each player handles the container’s timing information rather than in the cut itself.
- Confirm the output format. If the trimmer documents Fast as stream copy only for certain containers, a file in another container may need Precise mode.
- Re-trim the clip with Precise (Exact) mode. Anjin Media describes a frame-accurate re-encode as a workable fix when the early start appears only in some players.
- If the clip must stay unre-encoded, accept that the start will sit on the nearest seek point before your selection, and adjust the in-point to a keyframe-aligned position where possible.
Stream copy can also fail outright when the source’s audio or video streams do not fit the output container or the downstream player. In that case, the export may not open or may play without one of its streams, and the same fix applies: switch to a re-encoding mode.
Sources and limits of this explanation
The FFmpeg documentation gives the clearest description of both processing methods, and the FXI Studio and Anjin Media pages describe how two browser trimmers present them. No independent test of browser trimmers’ speed or output quality was found in the sources reviewed, so this article does not state speed multipliers, keyframe intervals, or quality-loss figures. Individual tools may use different defaults, so verify the mode notes in the trimmer you are using.
