That makes it a practical test of whether new payment and digital-identity systems work together—not evidence that cards or physical documents are about to disappear.
What is changing in travel payments?
Cards remain the leading option in passenger-reported preferences, but IATA’s Global Passenger Survey points to growing interest in digital wallets and instant payments. In its 2025 survey, 72% of passengers said credit or debit cards were their preferred travel payment method, down from 79% in the 2024 survey. Digital-wallet preference was 28% in 2025, compared with 20% in 2024; preference for instant payments, including IATA Pay as an example, was 8% in 2025, compared with 7% in 2024. These are survey responses, not audited payment volumes or shares of completed transactions. IATA, 2025; IATA, 2024

The shift is not simply from one way to pay to another. Travelers may encounter several payment choices when booking, then use a phone for loyalty information, check-in or airport navigation. The future-facing question is whether those separate steps can work together without sacrificing security, choice or reliability.

Why is travel a useful test for payment innovation?
A trip links systems that usually sit with different organizations: a travel seller, an airline or hotel, a payment provider, a loyalty program and airport or government identity processes. The traveler experiences these as parts of one journey, even when the underlying systems do not share the same technology or standards.

That complexity makes travel a demanding test for interoperability. A payment method may be convenient at checkout but difficult for a provider to support across booking and settlement systems. A digital credential may work at one airport checkpoint but not be accepted by another organization or country. Success depends on connections among systems—not just on the quality of a single app or payment screen.
IATA’s 2025 survey found that 78% of passengers wanted a smartphone combining a digital wallet, digital passport and loyalty cards for booking, payment and airport navigation. The result signals interest in a connected travel tool; it does not establish that such an all-in-one experience is already broadly available. IATA, 2025
What alternatives are gaining attention?
Digital wallets
Digital wallets can make payment details accessible on a phone and fit into a broader mobile journey. IATA’s 2025 survey describes passengers in Asia-Pacific as leading in wallet use, while also reporting regional differences in preferences. That aggregate finding should not be read as a description of every traveler in the region. IATA, 2025

- SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block RFID and NFC signals, protect your personal information, and enjoy peace of mind wherever your travels or business take you.
- JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.
- BROAD WORKING DISTANCE: With a 2.4” working distance, your entire wallet stays protected. The premium RFID blocking card helps secure cards within 1.2” on either side, providing reliable protection against electronic pickpocketing.
- ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
Instant and account-to-account payments
Instant payments are another option in the mix. IATA’s survey lists IATA Pay as an example, but its preference figures do not show how many travelers completed transactions through that method or how widely it is available. More broadly, Visa’s 2025 payments outlook discusses real-time and account-to-account payments as industry trends; that is Visa’s company perspective, not independent evidence of travel-sector adoption. IATA, 2025; Visa, 2024
Other alternative payment methods
Phocuswright’s public summary of its 2024 travel-payments research describes a wider set of alternatives, including mobile payments, digital currencies and buy-now-pay-later options. The summary identifies potential help with settlement problems, but says technical and integration challenges have slowed adoption. It does not provide enough public detail to establish how frequently each method is used across the industry. Phocuswright, 2024
How do travelers weigh convenience, benefits and security?
In IATA’s 2024 survey, 70% of passengers named convenience as a reason for choosing a payment method, followed by benefits at 39% and security at 33%. These are reported reasons, not a ranked evaluation of individual payment products. IATA, 2024

- [Portable] Super minimalist wallet for carry in front or back pocket; Disassembly D-shackle for lanyard or key-ring.

- [FurArt Service] Please contact us promptly if quality issue or delivery damaged.
That combination helps explain why there is no universal winner. A traveler may prioritize a familiar card, a wallet that reduces checkout steps, a method that offers relevant benefits, or a payment option available in their market. Providers, meanwhile, must consider how a choice fits their systems and settlement processes. Availability and regional preferences vary, so a method that works well in one market may not be the preferred or practical choice in another.

Payments are one part of a connected travel experience. Digital identity and biometrics can affect how travelers move through airport processes, and may be linked to the same phone-based experience they use for bookings and loyalty information. IATA reported in 2025 that half of passengers had used biometrics somewhere in an airport journey. In that survey, 74% said they would be willing to share biometric information to avoid repeatedly presenting documents; among those unwilling to share it, 42% said privacy assurance might change their view. These are self-reported responses, not measures of universal deployment or consent in every setting. IATA, 2025
Privacy is therefore part of the adoption challenge, not a side issue. A system that combines identity, payment and travel information needs credible safeguards and clear handling of personal data. IATA’s 2025 survey describes European passengers as more cautious about digital services and sharing personal information, while also reporting regional differences in adoption. Those broad patterns do not predict an individual traveler’s views.

IATA’s contactless-travel article describes a Hong Kong–Tokyo proof of concept linking credentials and wallets with biometric identification on an international round trip. It illustrates the kind of cross-organization process being explored, but a proof of concept is not universal availability. IATA identifies secure data handling, resilience and standardized digital identity as requirements for connected processing. IATA, 2025
What is slowing adoption?
The main constraint is often integration: providers need to make a payment method work with existing booking, payment and settlement systems. Phocuswright’s public 2024 summary says travel businesses have been slow to adopt alternative payment methods largely because of technical and integration challenges. A new checkout option does not automatically solve the operational work behind accepting, processing and settling a payment. Phocuswright, 2024
- Interoperability: systems operated by different businesses and authorities must recognize and exchange what they need.
- Security and privacy: payment and identity processes must protect sensitive information and earn travelers’ trust.
- Resilience: connected processes need to keep working reliably across the journey.
- Regional fit: preferences and available payment methods differ by market, so a single configuration may not suit every traveler.
- Settlement and integration: businesses must support new options within their technical and financial operations.
What do the surveys establish—and what do they not?
IATA’s Global Passenger Survey findings describe what respondents said they preferred, used or would consider in the survey years cited. They do not establish transaction shares, prove that all travelers behave alike, or show that cards and physical documents have been replaced. Regional descriptions are aggregate patterns. Phocuswright’s public summary supports the broad account of adoption barriers, but the full report’s underlying figures and methodology are not available in that summary.

Visa’s outlook provides a payment-network company’s view of wider developments such as digital identity and cross-border payments. It is useful context, but it should not be treated as independent confirmation of travel-specific adoption rates.
What the next phase depends on
Travel will remain a revealing test of payments because a trip puts checkout, payment choice, identity and movement through the airport into one connected experience. The meaningful measure of progress is not simply whether a new method exists. It is whether travelers can use appropriate options across the journey while organizations connect their systems, protect data and operate reliably across markets.
