Neither always wins. First check whether your current mobile plan includes roaming at your destination. If it does, using that allowance is usually the simplest choice. If roaming costs extra, compare the full trip price with a travel eSIM offering the data you expect to use. A travel eSIM can be cheaper, but it takes setup and may provide data only; keeping your home line active can also trigger roaming fees.
What’s the difference between roaming and a travel eSIM?
With home-carrier roaming, your usual phone line connects to a partner network abroad under your existing carrier’s terms. The charge might be included in your plan, covered by a travel pass, or billed separately. Check the rules for your exact destination and plan.

A travel eSIM is a separate digital SIM profile, commonly sold as a data allowance for a destination or region. You install or activate it, choose it for mobile data, and track its allowance and validity. Many travel eSIMs are data-only, so having internet access does not necessarily give you conventional phone calls or SMS.
Apple Support says international roaming with an eSIM works the same way as roaming with a physical SIM. The distinction is the plan and line you use—not a guarantee that an eSIM avoids roaming charges.

Which is cheaper?
Start with your home plan: included or fee-free roaming can make it the lowest-cost and simplest option. When roaming is paid, compare the total cost for the same destination, trip length, and realistic data use. Account for passes, usage limits, top-ups, and what happens when an allowance runs out.
What Ofcom’s comparison found
Ofcom’s 2026 UK communications market report compared prices gathered in August and September 2025 for a specific case: a UK pay-monthly customer taking a ten-day trip and using 10 GB, with a home plan allowance greater than 10 GB but no roaming already included at the destination. In five selected EU destinations—Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, and Greece—the average selected travel eSIM cost was £19.06. The average cheapest paid roaming option among three UK network brands charging for EU roaming was £19.50. Selected eSIM prices ranged from £13.39 to £30; the roaming options ranged from £17 to £21.50.

For the US, the same comparison put selected travel eSIMs at an average of £21.99, versus £49.28 for the average roaming option among four UK network brands. Selected eSIM prices ranged from £14.99 to £30; roaming options ranged from £36 to £78.60. These are averages from Ofcom’s sampled options, not current offers or prices that apply to every traveler.

The report used the cheapest available options in its sample, which included selected eSIM plans from Uswitch, Airalo, Maya Mobile, Saily, Holafly, and Jetpac. It excluded O2’s free EU roaming from the paid-roaming comparison and notes that customers with included or fee-free roaming are unlikely to save with a travel eSIM. Ofcom’s figures do not account for the extra effort of setup, billing, and phone configuration.

How to use those figures
The EU prices were nearly tied for this particular ten-day, 10-GB example; the sampled US eSIM options were substantially cheaper on average than paid UK roaming. Neither result predicts the price for another country, carrier, trip length, data amount, or plan. A short stopover, heavy hotspot use, or a different allowance can change the comparison. Check both prices for your actual trip before deciding.
Which is more convenient?
Roaming: less setup
Roaming usually means keeping your familiar account and number in use. Your carrier may require you to buy or enable a pass, and service must be supported at your destination. You still need to understand the plan’s allowance and charges. Apple Support advises contacting your carrier before travel to check international plans and avoid higher rates.

Travel eSIM: more configuration
A travel eSIM requires you to buy and install or activate another profile, select the line that supplies mobile data, and watch its data allowance and expiry date. Installation may require an internet connection, such as Wi-Fi or a hotspot. Once configured, it can be useful for travelers who want a separate destination-specific data plan, but it is not automatically simpler than roaming.
Will your phone and plan work?
Check eSIM support and carrier lock
Confirm that your exact phone model and regional version support eSIM and the networks available at your destination. If the travel eSIM uses a different carrier, the phone must be unlocked. Apple’s iPhone guidance lists iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later for many regions, but notes regional exceptions; check Apple’s current device guidance for your model rather than relying on the model name alone.
Best Value
Check what the eSIM includes
Before buying, read the plan terms for the data amount, validity period, speed limits or reductions, hotspot/tethering, top-ups, and whether voice or SMS is included. Do not assume a data plan includes a local number or conventional calls and texts. Internet calling and messaging apps can work over data, but they are not a substitute for included cellular voice or SMS in every situation.
How to avoid unexpected charges
- Check your home plan first. Confirm whether your destination is included, what allowance applies, whether you need to buy a pass, and what happens when you reach a limit. Apple Support recommends checking with your carrier before travel.
- Estimate your trip’s actual needs. Compare the total cost for your destination, number of days, and expected data use. Do not treat Ofcom’s 10-GB, ten-day comparison as a price estimate for a different usage pattern.
- Verify phone eligibility before purchase. Check eSIM support, unlock status, destination coverage, and any regional model limitations. Find out whether you need Wi-Fi or another internet connection to install the profile.
- Review the full eSIM terms. Check allowance, validity, speed policy, tethering, voice and SMS, and top-up rules. A plan’s headline data amount does not tell you every restriction.
- Choose your lines deliberately. Set the travel eSIM as the mobile-data line if that is your plan, and review data roaming on your home line. Keeping the home line enabled may preserve some home-number functions, but Apple warns that it can still incur roaming fees. Exact behavior and charges depend on your carrier and settings.
So, should you use roaming or buy a travel eSIM?
- Use included roaming when your plan covers the destination and its allowance suits your trip; it is usually the least complicated option.
- Compare paid roaming with a travel eSIM when your carrier charges extra. Decide using the complete trip cost for comparable data and dates, not a general claim that one option is always cheaper.
- Favor roaming for simplicity if you do not want to install and manage another profile, provided the price and terms work for you.
- Consider a travel eSIM if its destination-specific plan fits your expected data use and you have a compatible, unlocked phone.
Before departure, confirm the current carrier and eSIM terms: prices and availability can change, and the UK prices cited here reflect Ofcom’s August/September 2025 snapshot, published in 2026.
