The estimate may differ from the posted statement amount because the card issuer sets the conversion method, fee and timing.
Calculate the estimated CAD total
Use this formula:
Estimated CAD total = USD purchase price × USD-to-CAD exchange rate × (1 + foreign-currency conversion fee rate)

For example, assume a US$100 purchase, an exchange rate of C$1.40 per US$1, and a card fee of 2.5%. These are hypothetical inputs, not a current rate or a fee that applies to every card:

- Convert the purchase price: US$100 × 1.40 = C$140.
- Calculate the fee on the CAD amount: C$140 × 0.025 = C$3.50.
- Add the fee: C$140 + C$3.50 = an estimated total of C$143.50.
The calculation order matters: apply the card’s fee to the converted CAD amount, not directly to the USD price. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) illustrates the same method with a euro-denominated purchase; use a USD-to-CAD rate for a U.S.-dollar purchase. FCAC’s explanation of how credit-card currency conversion works also notes that financial institutions calculate foreign-currency charges in different ways.

Find the right exchange rate and card fee
Use a dated rate for an estimate
The Bank of Canada’s Daily Digest provides indicative exchange rates based on aggregated financial-institution quotes. Its rates express one unit of foreign currency in Canadian dollars, so a USD/CAD rate of 1.40 means US$1 is C$1.40. Daily averages are published once each business day by 16:30 ET.
A reference rate is useful for estimating, but it is not a promise of the rate your card issuer will apply. For context, the Bank of Canada listed USD/CAD at 1.4246 on 2026-10-02; that is a dated historical observation, not a rate to reuse as current.

Check your card agreement for the fee
Look in your cardholder agreement for wording such as “foreign currency conversion charge” or “foreign transaction fee.” Convert the percentage to a decimal before calculating: for example, 2.5% becomes 0.025. Use the fee specified for your card rather than assuming a fee from another card or from an example. FCAC’s sample credit-card agreement includes a 2.50% foreign-currency conversion charge as an example only.
Why the statement amount can differ
The issuer’s rate and conversion method may differ
Your issuer’s agreement governs how it converts the transaction. Some financial institutions convert directly into Canadian dollars; others may route a transaction through U.S. dollars. The rate used may therefore differ from a public reference rate, and the issuer’s rate can be tied to when the transaction posts rather than when you made the purchase. Check the conversion language in your agreement; FCAC’s sample agreement describes a rate in effect when a transaction posts.

The merchant may charge in a different currency than expected
Before confirming an online purchase, check whether the displayed price and final checkout amount are in USD or CAD. Currency and exchange-rate details may appear only at checkout or in fine print, according to the Competition Bureau’s guidance on U.S. and Canadian dollar pricing. If a merchant offers to convert the price at checkout, verify which currency it will actually charge before proceeding.
Refunds may not match the original CAD amount
If a USD purchase is refunded later, the CAD credit can differ from the original CAD charge because the exchange rate may have changed. FCAC discusses this possibility in its credit-card currency-conversion guidance.

Compare payment options if you buy in USD often
For occasional purchases, estimating the total with your card’s actual fee and a dated reference rate may be enough. If you regularly spend in U.S. dollars, compare card structures using these factors:
- Foreign-currency fee: Check the percentage in the card agreement.
- Conversion structure: A Canadian-dollar card converts purchases to CAD. FCAC says a U.S.-dollar credit card may suit people who often buy in U.S. dollars and may avoid foreign-currency conversion rates; consider that option alongside its account terms and costs.
- Rate and timing: A reference-rate estimate may not match the issuer’s conversion rate or the date it applies.
- Purchase currency: Confirm whether the merchant will charge USD or convert the price at checkout.
FCAC’s credit-card selection guidance recommends considering fees and your spending needs. It does not establish a universal best option or a personalized break-even point.
