Transparent Video: Match the Format to the Destination

Transparent video needs both an alpha-preserving export and a player that supports it. Compare ProRes 4444, WebM/VP8, and HEVC with alpha, then test the delivered file in its intended destination.

A file ending in .mp4 is not automatically transparent. The export must contain an alpha channel, and the app or browser receiving it must know how to interpret that channel. Choose a format for the destination, then test the exported file there—not just in the export dialog.

Why an MP4 filename does not guarantee transparency

MP4 is a container format, not a promise that a video contains transparency. The filename or URL suffix cannot tell you whether the encoded video has an alpha channel, whether export preserved it, or whether the playback software can render it.

Apple’s HEVC-with-alpha implementation illustrates the distinction: it stores a base image and alpha layer in one video track. A player that does not understand the alpha layer may show the base image by itself. Apple presenter Shiva Sundar described the encoding this way: “The encoded file will have the standard HEVC codec type.” That statement applies to Apple’s HEVC-alpha encoding; it does not mean ordinary HEVC or MP4 files contain alpha. Apple’s WWDC 2019 session and its AVFoundation documentation explain the Apple workflow.

Transparency depends on the encoded media and the playback pipeline, not the URL suffix.

Which transparent-video format fits the destination?

There is no universal winner. The useful choice depends on whether you need an editing handoff, browser playback, or playback on a supported Apple platform.

Workflow Useful when Important constraint
ProRes 4444 in QuickTime/MOV Editing handoff or import into Adobe Express Adobe documents ProRes 4444 input for transparent video. The files can be substantially larger and take longer to upload, import, and process. Confirm that the export preserves alpha. Adobe Express guidance; Apple Compressor guide.
WebM with VP8 alpha Web delivery when the target browser supports alpha Browser support differs: MDN says Safari does not support alpha transparency in VP8 video. Test the exact browser and device. Chrome’s developer guide; MDN’s video codec guide.
HEVC with alpha in QuickTime or MPEG-4 Playback on Apple platforms documented to support it Apple documents support for iOS 13, tvOS 13, and macOS Catalina, including Safari on iOS 13 and macOS Catalina. Those platform-specific details are not a guarantee for arbitrary third-party players or every current device. Apple’s WWDC 2019 session; AVFoundation documentation.

How to export and verify a transparent video

  1. Choose the destination first. Identify the app, browser, editor, presentation software, or overlay that must display the file. Adobe Express documents ProRes 4444 input; Apple documents HEVC with alpha for specified Apple playback contexts. For WebM/VP8 alpha, verify support in the browser you intend to use.
  2. Check that the source actually has alpha. An ordinary opaque clip will not become transparent because you save it as .mov or .mp4. Apple’s media APIs can detect whether an asset contains alpha. If you are creating transparency from filmed footage, you need to generate an alpha matte first—for example, by keying evenly lit green- or blue-screen footage. A screen is one way to create alpha, not a requirement for animation or footage that already has transparency. Apple’s session; Chrome’s guide.
  3. Select an alpha-capable export and preserve alpha. For Adobe Express, follow its current ProRes 4444 guidance. In Apple Compressor, look for “Preserve Alpha” and confirm that your installed version offers it for the chosen codec; the guide documents the option for ProRes 4444 or Animation, and for HEVC on macOS 10.15 or later. For Apple-targeted delivery, use HEVC with alpha only when the destination supports it. For WebM/VP8, verify browser compatibility before committing to that format. Adobe Express guidance; Compressor guide.
  4. Open the exported file in its real destination. Test it over both a light and a dark contrasting background. Confirm that the background shows through where expected and that edges look clean. A codec label or export setting is not proof that the delivered file works.

What to check when the background looks black or opaque

  • Confirm alpha survived export. Check the source and export settings rather than relying on the extension. A regular opaque source cannot gain transparency through a filename change.
  • Check the destination’s codec support. If VP8 alpha is involved, Safari is a documented exception. For Adobe Express, use its documented ProRes 4444 workflow; Adobe recommends an up-to-date Chrome browser if the file will not import or transparency appears opaque, while support for other browsers is still expanding. MDN; Adobe Express support.
  • Allow for file size and processing. Adobe warns that larger ProRes files can take longer to upload, import, and process, and that high resolution or file size can slow loading or playback on older devices or slower networks. A slow preview is not, by itself, evidence that alpha is missing. Adobe Express support.
  • Inspect alpha interpretation if edges have fringes. Apple’s workflow supports premultiplied and straight alpha and recommends premultiplied as the default in that workflow. If the transparency is present but edges show dark or light halos, check the export and compositing alpha settings. Apple’s WWDC session.

Why testing the delivered file matters

Codec support varies by player, browser, operating system, and app version. Apple’s HEVC-alpha documentation dates to 2019 and describes specific platform generations; it is not a complete compatibility matrix for current third-party software. Adobe’s transparent-video guidance was last updated October 5, 2026. For either workflow, the reliable check is the exported artifact in the destination and device that will actually use it.
