It brings together requirements for secure messaging, device and service discovery, service descriptions, and event notifications; it is not a device, app, or standalone discovery protocol.
What DPWS defines
DPWS specifies a minimal set of implementation constraints intended to help constrained web-service endpoints work with more capable clients. Its scope covers four related jobs:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Messaging: exchanging web-service messages, including secure messaging.
- Discovery: making services on a network discoverable.
- Description: describing services so clients can determine how to interact with them.
- Eventing: allowing a client to subscribe to and receive service events.
DPWS does not prescribe a particular device or guarantee that every product in a category implements it. The OASIS Devices Profile for Web Services Version 1.1 was approved as an OASIS Standard on 1 July 2009.

How DPWS discovery works
DPWS uses related web-service specifications for its capabilities. In particular, WS-Discovery defines how a requester can locate services. In ad hoc operation, a requester sends a probe to a multicast group; matching services respond directly. A service can also announce when it joins or leaves the network, avoiding reliance on repeated polling. WS-Discovery also defines managed discovery, including multicast-suppression behavior when a discovery proxy is available.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Once a client finds a device, a typical interaction proceeds from discovery to service use: the client identifies the device, enumerates its hosted services, retrieves a service description, then connects to a service to perform an action. Microsoft gives printers, webcams, and video systems as examples of network-connected devices in its overview of Web Services for Devices; those examples do not establish that every such device supports DPWS.
DPWS and WS-Discovery are related, not interchangeable
DPWS is the broader profile: it constrains and combines capabilities for device endpoints. WS-Discovery is a distinct standard focused on locating services, and is one part of the discovery picture. OASIS lists WS-Discovery Version 1.1 separately from DPWS 1.1.

What WSDAPI means—and what its documentation establishes
Web Services on Devices API (WSDAPI) is Microsoft’s implementation of DPWS documented for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. Microsoft describes it as supporting discovery, one-way and two-way control messaging, and eventing in its WSDAPI overview. Those platform references are historical; they do not establish support in current Windows versions.
An implementation also should not be assumed to support every elective feature in a profile. Microsoft’s WSDAPI DPWS compliance documentation distinguishes elective functionality it implements from functionality it omits. Check implementation-specific compliance details rather than treating the profile name alone as proof of complete support.

Standard status and scope limits
The OASIS WS-DD Technical Committee that produced DPWS 1.1 closed on 28 November 2016, after publishing DPWS 1.1, WS-Discovery 1.1, and SOAP-over-UDP 1.1. OASIS says the committee’s work archives remain publicly accessible. The committee’s closure is a status fact about that group; by itself, it does not show that every related standard or implementation has been abandoned.
The profile’s broad scope is not a substitute for implementation-level security guidance. For specific security mechanisms or deployment advice, consult the security provisions in the full DPWS specification and the documentation for the implementation in question.
