To make a PNG transparent, remove or clear the unwanted background in an image editor, then export or download the result as a PNG with transparency enabled. Saving an unchanged white-background image as PNG does not remove the white area.
How do I make a PNG background transparent?
There are two separate steps: edit the image so the background is removed, and export it in a way that keeps the transparent areas. For alpha transparency, GIMP’s manual says an alpha channel is required; its documented workflow then exports the image as PNG. Canva offers a browser-based BG Remover and a transparent-PNG download workflow.

- Identify the background you need to remove. A photo cutout, artwork on a flat color, and a design canvas with a background element may call for different editing approaches. There is no universally best selection method established by the cited instructions.
- Remove the background or clear the background element. Use the editor’s background-removal feature for a cutout, or remove the relevant layer or element where appropriate.
- Check that the background is actually clear. A checkerboard in the editor often indicates transparency; a white area may instead be part of the image or design.
- Export or download as PNG with transparency preserved. Select the transparent-background option when the editor provides one.
- Verify the exported file. Reopen or place it over a contrasting color to check that the intended area is transparent in the destination where you plan to use it.
How do I remove a white background from a PNG?
First determine whether the white area is an editable background or white pixels already in the image. If it is a background layer or design element, remove or clear that element. If it is part of a flattened image, use an appropriate selection or background-removal tool, then inspect the edges before exporting. Simply changing the file extension or saving the same image as PNG will not make its white pixels transparent.

Make a transparent PNG in Canva
Canva’s transparent-image tool describes uploading an image, choosing its BG Remover tool, and downloading the result as a transparent PNG. For a design download, Canva’s Help Center instructions say to set the background color to white or delete the background element, choose PNG, and enable “Transparent background” in the download settings.

Canva’s Help Center lists transparent-background design downloads for Pro, Teams, Business, Education, and Nonprofits plans, and says Canva Docs cannot be downloaded with a transparent background. Plan eligibility and interface labels can change, so check Canva’s current help page if the option is missing.
Make a transparent PNG in GIMP
- Check for an alpha channel. GIMP’s 3.0 manual says, “To export an image with alpha transparency, you must have an alpha channel.” The manual directs users to verify an “Alpha” entry in the channel dialog.
- Remove or clear the background. The manual describes removing the background layer; it also explains creating a gradient from color to transparency when that is the intended effect.
- Export as PNG. Use PNG export after the edit so the alpha transparency is retained. Follow the GIMP 3.0 manual’s transparency instructions for the current documented workflow.
Why is my PNG still showing a white background?
- The white area is still in the image. PNG is a file format, not a background-removal operation. Return to the editor and remove the white background or element.
- The image lacks alpha transparency. In GIMP, check that an alpha channel is present before exporting.
- The download omitted transparency. In Canva’s design download settings, select PNG and enable “Transparent background.”
- The destination app displays it differently. Inspect the exported file over a contrasting background in the app or page where it will be used; the cited workflows do not guarantee identical display in every destination.

The available documentation establishes these workflows, not a difference in cutout accuracy, edge quality, speed, privacy, or price. Choose based on the editor you have and the controls you need; inspect the finished cutout for halos or leftover background before using it.
