You don’t have to choose between translating every carrier scan word-for-word and showing readers a string they can’t understand. Localize the clear status—such as “Out for delivery”—and keep the carrier’s original event wording available when it adds detail or your system cannot confidently interpret it. That distinction matters because a tracking status can be a structured code, while its accompanying description is free text that may change.
Why a tracking message can be confusing—or quiet
Carriers use their own labels to describe where a shipment is in the delivery process. FedEx, for example, explains labels including “Exception,” “On the way,” “Out for delivery,” and “We have your package”; USPS groups help by delivery stage and individual scan status. A concise explanation in the reader’s language can make those events easier to understand without requiring them to know carrier-specific terminology.

A quiet history does not necessarily mean a package is stuck. FedEx says scan frequency varies and that it is not unusual for a shipment to go more than 24 hours without an update, particularly during long transit. USPS says tracking information is updated throughout the day as scans become available. A tracking interface should therefore avoid treating an absence of a new scan as proof that nothing is happening. See FedEx’s tracking and delivery guidance and USPS tracking status help.

For an interface, the most dependable pattern is to map a known, structured status to a controlled label or short explanation in the user’s language. Preserve the original carrier description alongside it when that wording adds useful detail, may be ambiguous, or could help someone verify the event with the carrier or customer support.

This is a product-design recommendation, not a universal carrier rule. DHL’s Unified Tracking API supports language-specific tracking applications, but that does not establish that every carrier offers the same fields or that every event description is translated with equal coverage or quality. DHL’s developer notice gives a more specific integration warning: “If your integration relies on matching or parsing tracking text, we strongly recommend using structured status codes instead of free-text descriptions.” The notice concerns a documented DHL Parcel Germany API update, where some event texts and remarks changed; it should not be read as a claim that all carriers change their wording at the same rate. See DHL Unified Tracking API documentation.
Choose a display strategy that fits the event
| Approach | What the reader gets | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Show a localized status or explanation | A quick, readable account of the shipment stage, using a known status concept. | It depends on a reliable mapping and may omit detail in the carrier’s event description. |
| Show only the carrier’s original wording | The carrier’s phrasing remains directly comparable with its own tracking history. | Readers may not understand carrier-specific shorthand or terminology. |
| Show both when needed | A clear localized explanation plus the source wording for context or verification. | The extra text can make the interface busier; reserve it for events where it adds value. |
There is no comparative usability study or accuracy ranking here that proves one strategy works best for every carrier, language, and event. The practical choice is to make familiar statuses easy to read while retaining context for exceptions and uncertain mappings.

What to account for by carrier
USPS: tracking depends on service and available scans
USPS says a trackable label may be scanned several times in the mailstream, including while USPS or a shipping partner has the item. Tracking can begin when the sender or partner electronically notifies USPS to expect it, before a later physical scan appears. USPS also says the status and delivery information available depend on mail class or add-on services, so do not promise one scan schedule or history for every shipment. Its tracking options include online, text, mobile app, and phone, with some notification and record conditions varying by service. Consult USPS Tracking Status Help and USPS Tracking: The Basics.
FedEx: explain statuses without implying a guarantee
FedEx defines “Exception” as a delay caused by circumstances such as severe weather or customs delays. It says “Out for delivery” means a package was scanned by a handler and loaded onto a delivery vehicle. These explanations make useful localized summaries, but a displayed stage should not be expanded into a delivery promise that the status itself does not make. See FedEx Tracking and Managing Deliveries.

DHL: use the documented API fields and scope the notice
DHL documents language-specific web applications as a use of its Unified Tracking API. Its 2026 notice describes changes affecting detailed tracking data for DHL Parcel Germany, including a timestamp format change to ISO 8601 with an explicit timezone offset and updates to some event descriptions and remarks. Those details apply to the service and API notice in question; they are not a universal format guarantee for DHL shipments or other carriers. For integrations that classify events, follow DHL’s recommendation to rely on structured status codes rather than matching free-text descriptions.
UPS: point readers to carrier-specific help
UPS organizes its tracking support around understanding a status, finding a package, and delivery actions. Its support material is a useful destination for carrier-specific questions, but it does not establish a general policy for translating tracking descriptions. See UPS Tracking Support.

- Strong Recognition Ability: With the 2500 pixels high-resolution CCD sensor Engine, Rapidly decodes all 1D and stacked barcodes (including ISBN book), even worn, damaged or tightly spaced codes. Scan 1D codes directly from paper or screen, such as a computer monitor, smartphone, or tablet, or scan through glass surfaces, plastic shrink wrap, a CCD scanner is likely the best way to go.
- Automatic Scanning: NT-1228bc barcode scanner have three scanning modes: manual trigger mode, continuous scanning mode and auto-sensing scanning mode. In addition, there is a storage mode. Storage mode can be used when you are out of range of Bluetooth and wireless connectivity. Supports storage of up to 100,000 barcodes. Note: Before use, you need to scan the corresponding setting barcode on the manual.
- 2600mAh Battery Upgraded: Continuous scanning up to 200,000 times on a full charge. After a full charge the scanner can be used for one month at least, even in warehouses and at pos checkout counters where scanners are frequently used. In libraries and hospitals it can be used even longer.
- Programmable Configuration: Add custom prefixes/ suffixes, delete characters, Add keyboard keys/ combinations (terminator TAB, CR&LF, Home etc.), Enable or disable the barcode type as you want. Buzzer can be set to mute to allow for a quiet operation.(Note: It does not work with square POS / Divalto / DoorDash / Lightspeed POS system)
Implementation checklist for a tracking interface
- Identify the carrier and the reader’s locale. Do not assume that a status label or available tracking detail has the same meaning or coverage across every service.
- Prefer structured event codes where the carrier provides them. Map known codes to reviewed, localized labels instead of parsing free text as though it were a stable field.
- Keep useful source detail accessible. Show the carrier wording when it clarifies an exception, preserves location or timing detail, or helps with support and verification.
- Be explicit when classification is uncertain. If an event has no reliable mapping, retain the original wording and avoid presenting a guessed translation as fact.
- Do not infer movement from silence. Show the last available scan and its time rather than claiming that a quiet history proves a shipment is delayed or stationary.
