A transient ischemic attack (TIA), sometimes called a “mini-stroke,” can cause temporary symptoms, but you cannot safely distinguish it from a stroke at home. In the UK, call 999; in the US, call 911. Elsewhere, use your local emergency number.
What is a TIA?
A TIA happens when blood flow to part of the brain is briefly disrupted, commonly because a blood vessel is blocked. The affected brain tissue does not receive its usual supply of oxygen-rich blood, producing stroke-like symptoms that may clear within minutes or hours. The symptoms stopping does not establish that the event was harmless or confirm that it was a TIA; early assessment is needed to check for stroke and identify the cause. The NHS explains what a TIA is, and the American Stroke Association describes it as a warning requiring immediate attention.

What are the symptoms of a TIA?
Symptoms typically begin suddenly. They can resemble stroke symptoms and vary depending on which part of the brain is affected.
Use FAST to spot common signs
- Face: One side of the face may droop or feel numb. Ask the person to smile and notice whether the smile is uneven.
- Arms: One arm may be weak or numb, or drift down when the person tries to raise both arms.
- Speech: Speech may be slurred or garbled, or the person may have difficulty understanding others.
- Time: Call emergency services immediately if any of these signs appear.
Other possible sudden symptoms
FAST does not cover every possible sign. A TIA may also involve sudden loss or blurring of vision, double vision, dizziness or vertigo, confusion, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or problems with balance or coordination. These symptoms can have causes other than TIA or stroke, so a symptom list cannot diagnose the event. The NHS lists TIA symptoms and FAST guidance.

Can TIA symptoms go away?
Yes. Symptoms may resolve within minutes or hours. But improvement does not rule out a stroke, and it is not a reason to wait for symptoms to return. The American Stroke Association’s advice is: “When you first notice symptoms, get help immediately, even if symptoms go away.”
What should I do if symptoms have stopped?
- If symptoms are happening now, or have just stopped: call your local emergency number immediately. Call 999 in the UK or 911 in the US; elsewhere, use the local emergency number.
- Tell the dispatcher what happened: describe the symptoms and when they began, including whether they have changed or stopped. Follow the dispatcher’s instructions.
- Continue with emergency assessment: do not cancel help because the person seems better. Early on, a person cannot reliably tell whether the cause was a TIA or a stroke.
- If the episode happened earlier and was never assessed: seek urgent medical advice now. The appropriate route depends on the local health system; do not wait for another episode.
In the UK, the NHS advises hospital assessment and specialist referral within 24 hours of symptom onset. Other health systems may use different pathways, so use local emergency services for current or recent stroke-like symptoms. NHS guidance on diagnosis describes its referral timeline.

What causes a TIA, and what raises the risk?
A TIA occurs when a vessel supplying the brain is temporarily blocked. A clot may form in a narrowed artery or travel from elsewhere. Fatty plaque can narrow arteries, while atrial fibrillation—an abnormal heart rhythm—can allow clots to form in the heart and travel to the brain. The NHS also lists fatty material or air bubbles as possible causes and says bleeding in the brain is a very rare cause. The NHS explains possible causes.
Risk factors include older age, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, and excessive alcohol use. Some population-level differences in risk are associated with ancestry, but group identity alone does not determine an individual’s risk. A clinician can assess personal risk factors and possible causes.

How is a TIA diagnosed?
There is no single test that confirms every TIA. Clinicians consider what happened, examine the person, and may use tests to look for stroke, a possible source of a blockage, or conditions that affect future risk. The precise assessment varies by health system and individual circumstances.
| Assessment | What it can help investigate |
|---|---|
| Event history and neurological examination | What symptoms occurred, how they changed, and signs of neurological problems. |
| Blood pressure and blood tests | Blood pressure and risk factors such as diabetes or high cholesterol. |
| ECG | Abnormal heart rhythm, including a possible cardiac source of a clot. |
| Carotid ultrasound or other vascular imaging | Narrowing or blockage in arteries supplying the brain. |
| Brain imaging, such as CT or MRI | Evidence of stroke or other explanations for symptoms. The American Stroke Association says that, with an appropriate scan, 2 in 5 people are found to have had a stroke rather than a TIA. |
The American Stroke Association also reports that nearly 1 in 5 people with a suspected TIA will have a stroke within 90 days. This is the association’s published figure, not a prediction of an individual’s outcome. It also estimates that about 240,000 people in the United States experience a TIA each year. These figures are from the association’s page accessed in 2026; the underlying study for the figures is not identified here. They should not be used to estimate an individual’s risk. See the American Stroke Association’s TIA page. For the NHS pathway and tests, see NHS diagnosis guidance.

How is another TIA or stroke prevented?
Prevention depends on the cause found and the person’s health. After assessment, clinicians may recommend changes to habits, medicines, or—in selected cases—a procedure. Possible approaches described by the NHS include:
- Lifestyle changes that address personal risk factors.
- Antiplatelet medicines, such as aspirin, clopidogrel, or dipyridamole.
- Anticoagulants for some clot sources, including atrial fibrillation.
- Statins or treatment for high blood pressure.
- Carotid endarterectomy for selected people with narrowing in a carotid artery.
These treatments are not interchangeable, and each has potential risks, including bleeding or procedural risks. A clinician should decide what is appropriate after evaluating the cause; do not start aspirin or another medicine on your own for suspected TIA. The NHS outlines TIA treatment options.

Can a home blood pressure monitor detect a TIA?
No. A home blood pressure monitor can help track blood pressure as part of clinician-guided risk management, but it cannot detect a TIA or rule out a stroke. Sudden stroke-like symptoms need emergency assessment regardless of a home reading. The NHS identifies high blood pressure as a risk factor; its treatment guidance discusses prevention.
