To install the correct Wi-Fi driver, first identify the wireless adapter in Windows Device Manager, then get a package matched to that adapter—or to your computer’s exact model—and your Windows version. Use Windows Update or the computer maker’s official support site. If the adapter is missing from Device Manager, treat that as a detection problem rather than guessing at a driver.
Identify the Wi-Fi adapter before downloading anything
On Windows 10 or Windows 11, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and look for the wireless adapter’s full name. Open its Properties, select the Driver tab, and note the driver provider, date, and version. Microsoft recommends checking these details when troubleshooting Wi-Fi problems: Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows.

Check that the adapter is enabled. If the name is unfamiliar, use your computer maker’s support information to confirm which wireless card is installed; some computer models are sold with different cards in different configurations. Lenovo and Dell provide model-specific identification guidance: Lenovo’s Wi-Fi driver guidance and Dell’s adapter identification guide.
Choose a compatible driver from a trusted source
Start with Windows Update, Microsoft’s recommended general route for driver updates. If you need to download a package manually, go to the PC maker’s official support page and select the exact model, installed Windows version and system architecture, then look under wireless LAN or network drivers. Confirm that the listing matches the installed adapter where possible. A newer driver is not necessarily the right driver if it is for a different card or Windows version.

Microsoft says: “Avoid downloading drivers from any websites other than the manufacturer’s official site.” See Update drivers through Device Manager in Windows.
If you have confirmed that the adapter is Intel, Intel’s Driver & Support Assistant and identification instructions are options for finding an Intel driver. Prefer the PC maker’s package when its instructions direct you to use it; do not install an Intel package simply because the computer contains an Intel processor. Intel also advises contacting the computer’s original equipment manufacturer when an Intel wireless adapter does not appear in Device Manager. Install or update the driver in Windows
Follow the PC maker’s instructions if the download includes an installer. For a driver package that must be selected manually, extract its files first if needed, then use Device Manager:
- Right-click the wireless adapter under Device Manager → Network adapters and choose Update driver.
- Choose the option to browse your computer for drivers, then point Windows to the folder containing the downloaded or extracted driver files.
- Follow the prompts. Restart the computer if Windows or the manufacturer’s installer requests it.
Windows Update or Device Manager may find and install a suitable driver automatically, but a model-specific package from the PC maker is useful when automatic installation does not resolve the issue.

Install the driver when the computer has no internet
Use another internet-connected computer to download the driver from the affected PC’s manufacturer support page. Save the package to a USB flash drive, move it to the affected computer, and run the installer or use Device Manager to browse to the extracted files. Microsoft describes this offline method in its Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
Keep the downloaded package available until the connection works. In particular, have it ready before removing an existing driver: if Windows does not reinstall the adapter successfully after a restart, you will still have the manufacturer’s package to install manually.

If the Wi-Fi adapter is missing from Device Manager
Expand Network adapters and check for an unknown device or an adapter that may be disabled. If the wireless adapter is not listed, a driver update alone may not solve the problem: Windows may not be detecting the hardware. Look up the exact PC model on its maker’s support site, and use the manufacturer’s identification guidance rather than installing a package based only on the laptop brand. Intel directs users to the OEM when its wireless adapter is absent from Device Manager.

First compare the installed driver’s date and version with the current package listed for your exact computer or adapter. If the failure began after an update, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance supports uninstalling the adapter driver and restarting so Windows can attempt to reinstall it. Download the manufacturer’s driver package beforehand as a backup, then use it if Windows does not restore a working driver.

What to do on a Mac
Do not follow Windows Device Manager steps on macOS. For a Mac that can connect through another Wi-Fi network, Apple advises updating macOS as part of troubleshooting. Its guidance does not describe a generic manual Wi-Fi driver installer: If your Mac isn’t connecting to the internet over Wi-Fi.
