What you can transfer is responsibility for a mobile line and its billing: the account holder role moves from one person to another, and the line usually stays with the same carrier. That change is handled by the carrier, through its own transfer process, and the steps differ by company. This guide explains how the process works at AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon, what to check before you start, and what can change for the person receiving the line.
Which task you are actually doing
Readers often search for “transfer SIM card ownership” when they mean one of three different jobs. Confirm which one applies before you follow any steps.

| Your goal | What changes | Covered here? |
|---|---|---|
| Make another person responsible for an existing line at the same carrier | The account holder and billing responsibility for the line | Yes. This is the process the carrier transfer pages describe. |
| Move a SIM or line to a different phone | The device the SIM is placed in | No. The carrier transfer pages reviewed do not cover this task. |
| Move your number to a different carrier | The carrier that serves the number | No. This is a number port, not an account ownership change. |
Carrier transfer pages do not describe a physical SIM being sold or handed over, and no step in them requires you to buy a SIM, adapter or ejector pin. Whether a SIM swap is needed when you move a line depends on your carrier and device, and the sources reviewed do not establish a general rule, so ask the carrier directly.

- Receiving person’s credit and payment. The recipient may need a satisfactory credit evaluation, a deposit or an advance payment, depending on the carrier.
- Plan comparison. The recipient should compare the plan they will receive with the plan now on the line, rather than assume the current price or promotion will carry over.
Step-by-step by carrier
The three carriers use different routes. The steps below follow each carrier’s own transfer pages, which were checked on October 7, 2026. Confirm them against the live page before you start, because account rules and plan terms change.

T-Mobile does not run this as a single online click-through. Both parties contact the carrier. T-Mobile Support states on its account ownership page: “Both the new account owner and the existing account owner must call T-Mobile to authorize the change of account ownership.” The page is issued by T-Mobile Support and does not show a named author or publication date.

Two T-Mobile-specific points matter for planning:
- Equipment installment balances. A qualifying equipment installment plan (EIP) balance can be moved to the new owner, but only within 60 days after the number’s ownership transfers. Once that window closes, the balance is not described as moving on the page.
- Promotions. Promotions tied to the old account do not transfer with the line.
Verizon personal account
- The sending Account Owner or Account Manager signs in to My Verizon and starts a Transfer Your Service request.
- The receiving account’s owner or manager accepts the request within the acceptance period and selects an eligible plan.
- Verizon reviews the receiving account’s credit standing and device-payment agreements.
Verizon’s page states a 15-day acceptance period for personal lines (30 days for business lines). It also states that a new account must have been active for a minimum period before it can transfer a line out: 30 days for a personal account and 5 days for a business account. Full requirements are on the Verizon transfer page.

What the first bill can look like
Read the confirmation carefully, because the first bill after a transfer often differs from the bill before it.
Rank #4
- What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
- Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
- How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
- The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
- Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs
- AT&T. The recipient’s first bill can include a full month billed in advance plus partial-month service.
- Verizon. Both accounts can receive prorated adjustments, and the recipient can see a full month billed in advance.
- T-Mobile. The original account holder stays responsible for charges until the accepting party completes the change. Installment charges that are not transferred may remain with the original holder.
Before you confirm, check the effective date, the new plan, who is responsible for any device payments, and any discounts or promotions that will end.

Protect what the transfer may not carry
Save any voicemail you need before you confirm, because AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon all state that voicemail does not carry over in the transfer. Also review any subscription, perk, rewards or promotional benefit tied to the old account. None of the carrier pages promise that these will follow the line, so do not assume they will.

When the standard route may not apply
The three carrier pages describe their standard consumer routes. Business lines, prepaid plans, lines connected to estates, situations involving domestic violence, and mixed-service accounts may follow a different route or have exceptions. T-Mobile also runs a separate business process. If your line falls into one of these categories, ask the carrier which procedure applies before you start.
What these sources do not establish
The carrier pages covered here apply only to AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon in the United States. They do not establish the rules for other U.S. carriers, for other countries, or for every prepaid or business account. None of the pages publishes how often transfers succeed or how long they take, so no completion rate or timeline is given here. Treat any claim that a transfer is free, that the number moves instantly, that the old plan stays in place, or that you need a new SIM as unverified across these carriers.
If the carrier’s live page differs from what is described here, follow the live page.
