To update an LG webOS TV, open the Software Update menu and select Check for Updates while the TV is connected to the internet. If the internet check fails or you cannot connect the TV, download the firmware file for your exact model from LG’s support site and install it from a USB drive. Which menu path you use, and which firmware file applies, depends on your TV’s model and region, so confirm both before you start.
Start by identifying your TV’s webOS generation
LG’s menus differ by webOS generation, and LG’s September 2026 US update guide separates two groups: 2020 and later models running webOS 5.0 or newer, and 2019 and earlier models running webOS 4.5 or older. Settings can still vary from one model to the next, so treat the paths below as LG’s standard layout and check your model’s manual if a label is missing.

LG’s guide says that pressing Settings or Mute three times on the remote displays the webOS version. That shortcut is described only in that guide. If it does not work on your set, the webOS version is listed in your model’s documentation.

Check for and install an update over the internet
This is the simplest method and the one to use whenever the TV can reach the internet.

- Connect the TV to your network under Settings, then Network, and confirm it has a working connection.
- Open the menu path for your generation from the table above and select Check for Updates.
- If an update is offered, select it and follow the prompts. Keep the TV connected to power and to the internet for the whole process.
- Expect the TV to restart during installation. Wait for it to come back on before using it.
If the TV reports no update, LG says it may already have the latest software available for that model. That message does not mean every TV of the same brand has the same version, and it does not tell you whether a newer major webOS release exists for your set.
Turn on automatic updates
With Auto Update switched on, the TV installs new software on its own rather than waiting for you to check. Use the Auto Update path in the table above for your generation. On 2020 and later models the setting sits under Support, Software Update. On 2019 webOS 4.5 sets it sits under General, Support, Software Update. Older NetCast sets use a different path, which you should confirm in the manual for your model.

Update offline with a USB drive
Use this method when the TV cannot connect to the internet or when the internet check does not show an update you need. The firmware file must come from LG’s support page for your exact model number. Do not use a file for another model, region, or product family.

- A USB flash drive. LG’s June 12, 2026 help article for US customers specifies an empty drive with at least 1 GB of storage. This drive is only needed for the offline route; internet updates do not require it.
- A computer with internet access to download the file.
- The exact model number of the TV, found on the label on the back of the set or in its settings.
Preparing the drive
- On a computer, go to LG’s support site and search for your exact TV model number.
- Download the firmware listed for that product. Extract the downloaded archive so you have the
.epkfirmware file. - On the USB drive, create a folder named exactly
LG_DTVin the root directory, meaning not inside another folder. - Copy the extracted
.epkfile into theLG_DTVfolder.
The two LG guides differ on formatting. LG’s September 10, 2026 update guide says to format the drive as FAT32 or NTFS. Before you format, check the instructions for your region and model, because the guides do not give a single formatting rule for every set.

Running the installation
- With the TV on, insert the USB drive into a USB port on the TV.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to start the update.
- Leave the TV powered on. LG’s June guide says installation may take 3 to 5 minutes; this is LG’s estimate, not a guaranteed duration.
- When the update finishes, LG’s June guide tells you to turn the TV off for 10 seconds and then back on. Follow any instruction on the screen that takes priority over this step.
If the screen goes dark or freezes during an update
Do not unplug the TV or disconnect it from the internet while an update is running. LG’s September 10, 2026 guide says doing so may cause a system error. If the TV restarts or the screen turns off, keep it plugged in and let the automatic restart finish. LG’s guide says to wait about 5 to 10 minutes before taking any other action.
When the update does not start
- Check for Updates reports nothing. The TV may already have the newest software LG has released for that model. Confirm the model number, since the same brand name can cover several models with different firmware.
- The menu path is different. LG says its guides describe standard models and that settings may vary. Use the menu labels on your own screen and your model’s manual.
- The USB update does not appear. Check that the folder is named exactly
LG_DTV, that it sits in the drive’s root, that the.epkfile is inside it, and that the file matches your model. - The problem persists. LG’s guide directs readers to its chatbot or to a technician visit for unresolved problems.
What the official guides do not establish
LG’s guidance does not establish which firmware version is the newest for an unidentified TV, and it does not say that every older TV is eligible for a major webOS upgrade. LG’s June 12, 2026 help article states: “Firmware updates are released on an as-needed basis for LG Smart TVs.” That means update availability is set model by model, so the only reliable check is LG’s support page for your exact model.

Because the two LG guides were published in June and September 2026, check the LG support page for the date of the current firmware for your model before you rely on any step above.
Neither method involves third-party firmware. Both the internet check and the USB method rely on files and menus that LG publishes for its own sets.

Keep the TV plugged in and connected for the full process. LG’s September 10, 2026 update guide states: “Do not unplug your TV or disconnect it from the internet during the update.”
