You can move existing photos from a Samsung Galaxy to a microSD card only if your exact phone or tablet has a card slot. When it does, My Files is the dependable route: select the images, choose Move or Copy, and send them to the card. Gallery shortcuts and camera storage settings appear only on some models, software versions, and carriers, so start with the compatibility check below.
Check whether your Galaxy model accepts a microSD card
A microSD card is useful only when the device has a card slot, and Samsung states that not all Galaxy phone and tablet models support microSD. Confirm your exact model number before you buy a card or follow the steps below. Two quick checks settle it:

- Look up your model on Samsung’s support site or its published specifications and find the microSD or storage entry.
- After inserting a card, open My Files. If an SD card location appears, the device recognizes the card. If it does not, go to the troubleshooting section.
Choose a card your device can use
Samsung’s US support page, accessed in 2026, describes three card types by capacity:

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Card type | Capacity band (Samsung US) | Samsung’s guidance |
|---|---|---|
| microSD | Up to 2 GB | Sufficient for less demanding still photography |
| microSDHC | Over 2 GB through 32 GB | Sufficient for less demanding still photography |
| microSDXC | Over 32 GB through 2 TB | Recommended for high-resolution video because of capacity and read/write speed |
These bands describe the card standards. They do not guarantee that every Galaxy model accepts every size or card type, and they are not independent performance tests. Check the specification for your device before buying a microSDXC card for a model you have not verified.

Move existing photos with My Files
Samsung’s US support page says file moves and copies to a card are done in My Files. Menu names can vary slightly by software version, but this is the general procedure:
- Insert the microSD card and confirm that your model supports it.
- Open My Files, usually from the Samsung folder. Tap Images, or browse to Internal storage > DCIM > Camera.
- Touch and hold a photo to select it, then tap any other photos you want to include.
- Tap Move or Copy.
- Return to My Files Home and tap SD card. Open an existing destination folder or create a new one.
- Tap Move here or Copy here.
- Open the destination folder and confirm the photos appear before you delete anything else. The SD card destination appears only while a card is inserted.
Move or copy: which to choose
- Move transfers the original files off internal storage. Use it when the card should be the only home for those photos, and keep a backup until you have verified the copies on the card.
- Copy leaves the originals in internal storage and creates a second copy on the card. Use it when you want photos in both places.
Gallery albums and model differences
Gallery workflows are where regional and model differences show up most clearly. Samsung’s UK support material documents an album-based process, but Samsung’s US page takes a different position.

The Samsung UK Gallery album workflow
- Open Gallery and go to Albums, then tap Options and Create album.
- Choose SD card as the location and name the album.
- Open Pictures, select the photos, then tap More options and Move to album.
The selected photos move into the new album. Albums saved on the SD card display a small SD-card icon, which helps you tell them apart from internal albums.
Why the US instructions differ
Samsung’s US support page states: “You can only move or copy files this way in the My Files app. You cannot move or copy files to other apps, such as Gallery.” If your Gallery does not show the album options above, use the My Files procedure instead. It is the route Samsung’s US guidance describes as the general method.

Save future photos to the SD card automatically
On supported configurations, the camera can save new photos directly to the card. Open Camera, go to Settings, and set Storage location to SD card. This option may be missing on a model without a card slot, or on a software build with different menus.
Photos saved this way land in the camera folder, which Samsung identifies as My Files > Internal storage or SD card > DCIM > Camera. Choose the SD card entry to browse the photos on the card.

- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
When the SD card does not appear
If My Files shows no SD card location, work through these steps in order:
- Confirm that the model supports microSD, as described at the start of this guide.
- Power down if needed, remove the card, inspect it for visible damage, clean the contacts gently, and reinstall it firmly.
- Test the card in another mobile device. If it works there, the phone’s slot or software is the likely cause. If it fails there too, the card is the likely problem.
- Format the card only as a last resort. Formatting permanently erases everything on the card, so back up any wanted files first.
Other ways to get photos off the phone
Several other routes exist for adjacent goals. None of them places photos on the microSD card itself, so choose one based on what you need to accomplish.

| Option | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| USB OTG flash drive | Moving photos to an external USB drive, including on a model without a card slot | A flash drive is a separate device, not a microSD card |
| Computer over USB | Copying photos to a PC | Connect the unlocked phone, then select Transferring files/MTP |
| Cloud storage | Reaching photos from other devices | Photos remain on a cloud service, not on local storage |
| Smart Switch | Moving content to another phone or tablet | Designed for device-to-device migration |
| Quick Share or Nearby Share | Sending files to nearby devices | Does not place photos on a card |
Samsung’s US guidance also notes transfer restrictions for Secure Folder media and for encrypted music and other purchases, so those items may not move through these routes.
