For a selected set of photos, connect your unlocked Samsung Galaxy phone to a Windows PC with a data-capable USB cable, allow access on the phone, choose Transferring files or MTP if prompted, then copy the images in File Explorer. Camera photos are usually in DCIM > Camera. For a Mac, a full backup, or wireless sharing, use the method that matches your computer and how many files you need. Menu wording and feature availability vary by model, software version, service provider, and region.
Choose the transfer method that fits your task
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| USB and File Explorer | Copying selected photos to a Windows PC | Requires a data-capable cable, phone access permission, and file-transfer mode when prompted. |
| Smart Switch | Backing up a Galaxy phone to a PC or Mac, or migrating data | Use the desktop app and connect the phone by USB. It is broader than a quick photo-only copy. |
| Phone Link | Viewing and saving recent photos on a linked Windows PC | Samsung says it can show up to 2,000 recent photos and videos; available options vary by device and software. |
| Quick Share | Sending a smaller selection wirelessly | Useful when folder browsing is unnecessary; availability depends on compatible devices and software. |
| Cloud storage | Getting photos to a computer without a direct phone connection | Requires the relevant account, connectivity, and available service storage. |
| USB OTG drive or microSD | Copying files through removable storage | Phone support varies; external storage may depend on model compatibility and power requirements. |
Samsung documents these options across its support pages: moving files with external devices and services, Link to Windows, and Smart Switch backups.

Copy selected photos to a Windows PC with USB
- Unlock the Galaxy phone and connect it to the PC with a cable that supports data transfer. Some cables charge the phone but cannot transfer files; an adapter or a different cable may be needed for the ports on your devices.
- Tap Allow if the phone asks to allow access to phone data.
- If the phone does not appear in Windows, open its USB notification and select Transferring files, MTP, or a similar file-transfer option. Some versions may label the setting Transferring files/Android Auto.
- Open File Explorer, select the Galaxy device, and browse its internal storage. Camera pictures are usually in DCIM > Camera.
- Select the files and copy them to a folder on the PC. To keep the originals on the phone, copy rather than cut or move them.
Other pictures may be in Download or an app-specific folder. If you are unsure where an image is stored, check its details in Gallery for its file path. Samsung’s Australian photo-transfer instructions apply to Australian Galaxy variants; menus can differ elsewhere.
Back up a Galaxy phone to a PC or Mac
Use Smart Switch when you want a broader backup or are preparing to move data to another Galaxy device. Samsung describes its desktop app for PC and Mac: install the current version for your computer, connect the phone with a data-capable USB cable, allow access if prompted, then choose Backup. Samsung’s UK guide lists the Mac default backup location as Documents/Samsung/SmartSwitch/backup and says the location can be changed in settings.

- USB-C to C Cable for up to 25W Charging Speeds
- Get it in black or white to suit your style and device
Smart Switch is not simply a faster way to select a few image files. Samsung notes that some secure or encrypted app data and DRM content cannot be transferred, and app login credentials may not carry over. If you need particular photos, confirm they are included in the backup or use a file-copy method supported by your computer.
For Mac-specific compatibility and downloads, consult Samsung’s Smart Switch guidance. Samsung’s France photo-transfer page also describes a Mac workflow, but file access and support depend on the Mac’s software and Samsung’s current compatibility. Do not assume every Mac can browse a Galaxy phone in the same way Windows File Explorer can.

Phone Link on Windows
After linking the phone and PC, Phone Link can display and save recent photos. Samsung says the feature displays up to 2,000 recent photos and videos; as new items arrive, older previews are removed. Device and software differences affect which options are available.
Quick Share
Use Quick Share to send selected Gallery photos or videos to another supported device when a wireless transfer is more convenient than browsing folders. Samsung’s file-transfer guidance covers Quick Share and other transfer routes.

Cloud storage
Services Samsung lists include Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, and Verizon Cloud. Upload from the phone and retrieve the files on the computer using the relevant service. This avoids a direct cable connection, but needs an account, internet access, and enough service storage.
USB OTG drive or microSD
In My Files, copy or move selected items to compatible external storage, then connect that storage to a computer. Not all Galaxy models support microSD or external storage, and support can depend on the device’s power needs. Check the phone’s compatibility before relying on this route.

Fix a phone that only charges or does not appear
- Try a data-capable cable. Samsung cautions that not all USB cables transfer data. Connect directly to another USB port on the computer if possible.
- Unlock the phone and allow access. Accept the phone’s prompt to allow access to phone data.
- Select file transfer. Open the USB notification on the Galaxy and choose Transferring files or MTP, rather than a charging-only mode.
- Remove connection intermediaries. Connect directly to the PC instead of through a USB hub, and try a different port.
- If Smart Switch cannot detect the phone, refresh its connection. Samsung recommends disconnecting and restarting the phone, then using Smart Switch’s More options to reinstall the device driver before reconnecting. A computer restart may also be needed.
- Check where the photo is stored. Camera images are usually in DCIM/Camera, while downloads and images saved by other apps may be elsewhere. A photo missing from Gallery may be hidden or stored in another location.
Samsung’s Smart Switch troubleshooting steps provide its device-recognition guidance. Photos in Secure Folder cannot be transferred using the methods described on Samsung’s US move-files page.
