To copy iPhone photos to a computer, connect the phone by USB and import them: use Photos on a Mac, or install Apple Devices and import through Microsoft Photos on Windows. For a library that stays in sync across devices, use iCloud Photos instead. The right method depends on whether you want a one-time copy or ongoing synchronization, and whether the full-resolution originals are stored on your iPhone.
Choose a transfer method

Import photos from an iPhone to a Mac with USB
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a USB cable that supports data.
- If the Mac asks to allow the accessory, approve the connection. Unlock the iPhone and tap Trust if prompted.
- Open Photos. If the import view does not appear, select the iPhone in the Photos sidebar.
- Choose an album or create one, select the photos you want, then click Import Selected or Import All New Items.
- Wait for the import to finish before disconnecting the phone.
For image files in a regular folder rather than the Photos library, use Image Capture. Apple also documents storing imported Photos content outside the library, including on an external hard drive. See Apple’s Photos storage guidance.

Import photos from an iPhone to Windows
- Install the Apple Devices app from the Microsoft Store.
- Connect the iPhone to the PC with a USB data cable and unlock the phone.
- Tap Trust or Allow on the iPhone if prompted.
- Use Microsoft Photos to import the pictures. Apple directs Windows users to Microsoft’s instructions for the specific Photos app steps.
If iCloud Photos is enabled on the iPhone, download the full-resolution originals to the phone before attempting a USB import to Windows. With iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage, an original may be in iCloud rather than locally on the iPhone. Apple explains this requirement in its transfer guide.

If new photos or videos do not work well with Windows
For future captures, Apple’s suggested compatibility setting is Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible. Apple says this saves future photos as JPEG and videos as H.264. It does not convert or change files already captured.

Use iCloud Photos for ongoing synchronization
iCloud Photos makes the library available on signed-in Apple devices, at iCloud.com, and on a Windows PC when set up. Changes made on one device appear on other devices with iCloud Photos enabled, so this is synchronization—not a one-time import. Photos and videos in iCloud Photos count toward iCloud storage; check that you have enough available capacity before turning it on. Apple’s iCloud Photos overview.
When Optimize Storage is on, full-resolution originals may be kept in iCloud instead of on the iPhone. That can leave some items unavailable for direct USB import to a Mac that is not using iCloud Photos. Apple’s options for those items are to enable iCloud Photos on the Mac or use AirDrop. Fix common transfer problems
- The computer does not show the iPhone: Unlock the phone, check for a Trust or Allow prompt, and confirm the USB cable supports data.
- Windows imports only some iCloud Photos: Download full-resolution originals to the iPhone, then try the USB import again.
- Some originals are missing from a Mac import: If Optimize Storage is on, the originals may be in iCloud rather than on the phone. Turn on iCloud Photos on the Mac or send the affected images using AirDrop.
- Windows has trouble with newly captured media: Set future captures to Most Compatible. This changes the format of future photos and videos, not existing ones.
- You want files in a folder instead of the Mac Photos library: Import with Image Capture, or choose an external storage destination supported by Photos.
What to prepare for a wired transfer
Use a USB data cable whose connectors fit both the specific iPhone and computer; connector requirements vary by device. A cable transfer does not require iCloud storage. An external drive is an optional destination for Mac photo storage, not a prerequisite for transferring photos.
