Traffic surge protection is a set of measures that helps a website or online service stay available when requests rise sharply. It typically combines edge caching, traffic filtering, rate limits, load balancing and the ability to add application capacity. The same setup can help with a legitimate rush of visitors and with malicious traffic, but a spike by itself does not prove an attack.
What does traffic surge protection mean?
The phrase is a practical umbrella term, not a single standardized product category. It describes a layered approach to maintaining service availability during an abrupt increase in requests, whether the cause is a popular event, unexpected demand or an attack.

Surge management plans for demand and capacity. Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) mitigation identifies and filters harmful traffic. The approaches overlap at layers such as a content delivery network (CDN), a load balancer and a web application firewall (WAF), but they are not interchangeable. A denial-of-service attack aims to affect availability for legitimate users; a DDoS attack uses traffic from multiple sources. AWS explains the distinction and mitigation options.

CDN caching reduces pressure on the origin
A CDN can serve cacheable content from edge locations nearer to visitors, so fewer requests have to reach the origin server. AWS describes CloudFront caching and request collapsing as ways to preserve origin capacity during high traffic. Dynamic or otherwise uncacheable paths still need suitable controls of their own. DDoS detection filters harmful traffic
Mitigation systems can inspect different signals, including packet fields, HTTP request metadata and origin response metrics. Depending on the traffic and attack type, a provider may drop, rate-limit or challenge requests. These controls address malicious traffic; caching, by contrast, primarily reduces how much eligible content must be fetched from the origin. WAF rules and rate limits control application requests
A WAF applies rules to web requests, while rate limiting caps request volume according to configured conditions. These tools are useful for paths that cannot be cached or need request-level controls. Rules should be scoped to the relevant endpoint and traffic pattern: an overly broad threshold can block legitimate users, APIs or an unusual but valid burst of demand. Load balancing and scaling address capacity
A load balancer distributes requests among available resources, and autoscaling can add compute capacity as demand grows. Neither makes every application endpoint infinitely scalable. The application, its dependencies and the way capacity is configured all have to tolerate the resulting load. AWS explains how Shield mitigates events.

Keep direct access to the origin restricted
Edge protections help only if traffic cannot simply bypass them to reach the origin. AWS recommends placing compute resources behind CDNs or load balancers and restricting direct internet access to infrastructure such as databases. Review origin exposure alongside cache policies, rules and scaling behavior. AWS DDoS guidance.

How to tell whether a traffic spike may be an attack
Cloudflare identifies slow responses or an outage, unexpected request or bandwidth spikes, and unusual requests in origin logs as possible signs of a DDoS event. None proves an attack on its own. Compare the event with the service’s normal baseline and check whether the pattern appears in edge analytics, bandwidth data and origin logs. Cloudflare’s “Under a DDoS attack?” guidance, updated April 20, 2026, discusses these indicators.
During an active event, check both edge/CDN analytics and origin health, verify that the origin is not directly exposed, and use the provider’s supported mitigations—such as appropriately scoped rate limits or challenges—when the traffic pattern warrants them. Account controls and incident procedures differ by provider, so follow the current official guidance for the service in use.

What to compare when choosing an approach

| Traffic layer | Does it address network or transport traffic, HTTP requests, DNS, or more than one layer? |
| Origin offload | Can edge caching serve the content? How are dynamic and uncached paths handled? |
| Traffic actions | Can the service drop, rate-limit, challenge or route requests? Can rules be scoped by endpoint or signal? |
| Capacity and distribution | Can traffic be distributed among healthy resources, and can compute capacity scale with demand? |
| Impact on legitimate users | How could thresholds or challenges affect real users, APIs or unusual but valid demand? The cited provider guidance describes configurable controls, not a universal threshold. |
| Deployment and exposure | Can the origin be restricted so requests cannot bypass edge protections? |
| Cost and plan limits | Check the current provider plan and the requirements of the architecture. The cited sources do not establish comparable prices across providers. |
These dimensions are distinct: caching reduces origin work for eligible content; filtering and rate limits act on requests; and load balancing or scaling addresses resource capacity. Choosing a service by its protection label alone does not establish that its configuration fits a specific workload.
