Traefik vs Caddy: Which Configuration Fits Your Workflow?

Traefik fits provider-driven routing from Docker and Kubernetes; Caddy fits direct configuration and automatic HTTPS. Choose by deployment model and operational needs.

Choose Traefik when you want routes to follow Docker labels or Kubernetes resources; choose Caddy when you prefer to define a reverse proxy directly in a Caddyfile or JSON and want automatic HTTPS handled for configured sites. Both can proxy traffic. The practical difference is how you describe services and operate the proxy.

Traefik or Caddy: how their deployment models differ

Decision point Traefik Caddy
How routes are configured Provider-based configuration can derive routing from infrastructure, including Docker labels and Kubernetes resources. Traefik’s Docker provider documentation describes label-based routing. Operators commonly define sites and upstreams in a Caddyfile; JSON is Caddy’s native configuration language. Caddy’s documentation covers its configuration options.
Best deployment fit Useful when routes should track services managed by Docker or Kubernetes providers. Useful when a direct, manually authored proxy configuration suits the deployment.
HTTPS operations Supports HTTPS entrypoints, redirects, and ACME challenges; requirements depend on the selected challenge and environment. Traefik’s ACME documentation explains challenge requirements. Automatic HTTPS provisions and renews certificates and redirects HTTP when activated. Public certificates require valid DNS and network reachability. Caddy’s automatic HTTPS documentation lists prerequisites.
Proxy behavior Routing and service behavior are attached through the relevant provider and configuration. The reverse_proxy directive documents load balancing, health checks, request handling, and transports.

There is no evidence here for a general performance, adoption, or cost winner. Choose based on the configuration model and operational responsibilities you actually need.

Docker Compose and label-driven services

Start with Traefik if you want container labels to describe routers and services, so routing can follow the containers you deploy. Its Docker quick-start shows provider setup and mounts the Docker socket. Treat access to that socket as part of your security design, and restrict which containers can define exposed routes.

The same quick-start demonstrates an insecure dashboard mode for development. Do not expose that mode in production; use an appropriately secured dashboard configuration or keep it inaccessible.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Caddy is also suitable for containers when you want to write the proxy configuration directly. In a container network, address the backend by its service or container-network name. Using localhost from the Caddy container points back to that container, not to a separate backend. Persist Caddy’s /data and /config directories as advised in the official Caddy container documentation.

One public host and a straightforward reverse proxy

Start with Caddy if a concise command or Caddyfile describes your sites clearly. Its automatic HTTPS can obtain and renew public certificates and redirect HTTP after the site is configured. Caddy’s documentation summarizes this as: “Automatic HTTPS provisions TLS certificates for all your sites and keeps them renewed. It also redirects HTTP to HTTPS for you!”

That convenience depends on the surrounding setup, not just the proxy: the configured hostname must resolve to the server, the host must be reachable on the required ports, and Caddy must be able to write persistent certificate data. Check DNS records, firewall rules, port forwarding, and storage before diagnosing certificate issuance as a proxy problem.

Do not select a Kubernetes controller from a feature checklist alone. Validate current documentation for your required API resources, TLS workflow, chart configuration, and dashboard policy. This comparison does not establish a complete feature-by-feature assessment of Caddy’s Kubernetes options.

Advanced proxy behavior

Caddy’s reverse_proxy directive exposes controls for load balancing, health checks, request manipulation, and upstream transports. Review its behavior for the specific upstream type you plan to use: Caddy documents that dynamic upstreams have caveats, including that active health checks do not run for them.

Plan HTTPS before choosing a configuration

Both projects can support HTTPS, but neither can make a public hostname reachable or correct DNS on your behalf. For public certificates, establish who controls DNS, how traffic reaches the host, which challenge method is appropriate, and where certificate data will persist.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • With Caddy: configure a hostname, point its DNS records to the host, allow the necessary inbound traffic, and keep Caddy’s data directory writable and persistent. The automatic HTTPS guide details hostname, DNS, port, and storage requirements.
  • With Traefik: select the HTTPS entrypoint and redirect behavior, then configure ACME for the relevant challenge. Traefik’s Kubernetes guidance distinguishes HTTP-01 and DNS-01 constraints; consult the ACME documentation for the deployment and challenge you use.
  • For internal names: Caddy can serve certificates through its local CA, but client devices must trust that CA to avoid certificate warnings. This is different from obtaining a publicly trusted certificate.

Use the configuration workflow you can maintain

Traefik’s provider model is attractive when infrastructure state should supply route configuration. That can reduce the need to separately maintain a static list of services, but it makes provider setup, labels or resource definitions, and access boundaries central to operating the proxy.

Caddy’s Caddyfile offers a direct way to express site and proxy behavior, while JSON is the native configuration format. Caddy also exposes an API and supports dynamic configuration. Choose this approach when a focused configuration file or API workflow is easier for your team to review and change than provider-specific labels or resources.

For either tool, write down the routing requirements before migrating: host and path matching, upstream selection, load balancing, health checks, request or header changes, and transport settings. Then verify that the configuration mechanism you plan to use exposes the controls you need.

Deployment decision checklist

  • Choose Traefik as the first candidate if Docker labels or Kubernetes resources should drive route discovery.
  • Choose Caddy as the first candidate if you want to author a direct proxy configuration and rely on automatic HTTPS for public sites.
  • For Kubernetes, confirm current provider/API and chart support against the exact versions in your cluster.
  • For public HTTPS, verify DNS, inbound reachability, challenge prerequisites, and durable certificate storage.
  • For containers, review socket access and route exposure with Traefik; with Caddy, persist its data/configuration and use the backend’s network name.
  • For complex proxying, check the relevant directive or provider documentation for the exact load-balancing, health-check, request-handling, and transport behavior required.

Documentation and examples change: Traefik material referenced here includes v3.7 documentation, while the Caddy pages consulted do not identify an explicit release version in their extracted text. Check release-specific syntax and deployment requirements before copying configuration into production.
