In WordPress, authors send TrackBacks manually with an excerpt; pingbacks are generated automatically and send no content. The recipient can moderate a notification or choose not to display it.
What TrackBack content referencing means
A TrackBack is a notification that connects one blog entry to another: a writer publishes a reference to another post, then sends that post’s site a notice containing details about the reference. WordPress describes TrackBacks as a way to notify legacy blog systems that you have linked to them. They can make references between posts visible and, in some implementations, help gather links around a topic.

TrackBacks are not the same as an ordinary hyperlink. The link is part of the post; the TrackBack is a separate message sent to the linked site. Sending it does not guarantee the recipient will publish it.

| How they differ | TrackBack | Pingback |
|---|---|---|
| How it starts in WordPress | Manually, by the author | Automatically when a post links to a pingback-enabled post |
| What is sent | An excerpt of the content | No content excerpt |
| Verification described by WordPress | Source URL, title, and excerpt arrive as unverified request data | The target site fetches the source page and checks for the link |
| Whether it appears publicly | The recipient may moderate it or choose not to display it | The recipient can treat it as a comment and approve it |

How to send a TrackBack in WordPress
WordPress documents a manual workflow in the classic editor. The target post must provide a Trackback URI, which on WordPress ends in /trackback/.
- Open the post you want to reference and find its Trackback URI.
- In your WordPress post’s classic editor, open the Send Trackbacks module. If the module is hidden, enable it in the editor’s screen options.
- Paste the target post’s Trackback URI into the module.
- Publish your post. The recipient site may accept, moderate, or decline the notification; it may also choose not to display it.
WordPress’s instructions cover the classic editor. The available workflow may differ in other editors or on non-WordPress platforms; check the specific software’s documentation rather than assuming the same controls exist.

What a TrackBack request can contain
Movable Type’s manual documents one implementation in which a TrackBack ping is an HTTP GET request to a unique TrackBack URL. Its fields are title, excerpt, url, and blog_name. The documented response is XML with an error indicator, and a failed response also includes a message.

In that Movable Type implementation, excerpts longer than 255 characters are shortened to 252 characters followed by .... This is a documented implementation detail, not a universal TrackBack limit or a guarantee about other platforms. The protocol details are described in the Movable Type TrackBack documentation.

How TrackBacks connected posts and topics
TrackBack was designed not only for entry-to-entry references but also for category-to-category collections. A receiving category could gather links about a subject, while a publishing category could send notifications to remote TrackBack URLs registered for it. Movable Type’s specification also describes embedded RDF as a way to discover TrackBack endpoints and support threaded discussion across weblogs. These are capabilities described in the Movable Type documents, not claims that all blogs used them. See the TrackBack manual and TrackBack RDF specification.
Moderation, spam, and disabling TrackBacks in WordPress
TrackBack notifications are handled within WordPress’s comments and discussion system. In the administration area, Settings → Discussion contains controls for incoming link notifications and comment moderation, including link thresholds and a moderation list. Administrators can allow or decline notifications and decide how submitted items are handled. See WordPress Discussion Settings.

There is a verification difference with security implications. WordPress’s developer documentation says a pingback’s source page is fetched and checked for a link to the target. TrackBack source URLs, titles, and excerpts are instead unverified request data. That makes moderation important: a notification’s submitted details should not automatically be treated as proof that the stated page contains the link. This describes WordPress’s documentation and should not be generalized to every TrackBack implementation.

Turning off the global setting generally changes the default for future posts; it does not necessarily disable pings on posts already published. To stop them on older posts, edit those posts and disable pings individually. WordPress also documents a database-level method, but changing the database directly carries risk; use the per-post controls unless you are comfortable administering the database and have a safe backup. Is TrackBack still supported?
WordPress continues to document a TrackBack workflow, and Movable Type documents its own protocol behavior. Those sources do not establish how widely TrackBack is used today or whether a particular site accepts it. Treat it as a legacy mechanism: check the target blog’s documentation or settings, and do not assume that sending a TrackBack will work across platforms or result in a public reference.
