A small Python script can show how much two prompts differ in their wording, but it cannot tell you whether the change improves or harms a model’s answers. The DEV Community example Agentic-Local-Prompt-Semantic-Diffuser calculates a lexical change indicator from term counts and cosine similarity, then applies a few static checks. It is useful as a repeatable text-change signal—not as proof of semantic equivalence, safety, or quality.
What the prompt-drift CLI measures
The example, bylined PhenoX, is a one-file Python command-line script that compares an old prompt with a new one. It lowercases text, splits it on whitespace, builds a vocabulary from the prompts and any supplied test inputs, and counts vocabulary terms in each prompt. It then calculates cosine similarity between the prompt vectors and reports semantic_drift_score as one minus that similarity.

In plain terms, the result reflects overlap in the words used. It does not preserve word order or represent broader meaning. Two prompts can contain similar terms yet give different instructions; conversely, a rewrite using synonyms can produce a low lexical similarity despite preserving the same intent.

The script supplements the vector score with basic prompt-structure comparisons:

- It checks prompt length and line count.
- It checks whether the word “json” appears.
- It checks for Markdown-like markers.
- It labels structural risk high if the JSON hint changes, medium if prompt length differs by more than 200 characters, and otherwise low.
These are narrow, hard-coded heuristics. The risk label is not a general assessment of prompt safety or regression risk, and the checks do not establish whether formatting instructions still work.
How to run the example
The article shows standard-library imports only: sys, json, argparse, math, and typing. It does not identify an external package or service requirement. Save the script as prompt_diffuser.py, then run it with Python:

What the test-input alignment numbers mean
For each supplied input, the script compares that input’s term-frequency vector with each prompt vector. The resulting alignment values indicate shared words with the prompts. They do not measure whether a model responds correctly to the input: the example does not call a model, generate answers, or score outputs.

Treat the output as a lightweight, repeatable indication that prompt text changed, and use the structural checks to notice specific edits such as a removed JSON hint. Do not use the score alone to accept a prompt revision, or infer that a low score means behavior is unchanged.

- For behavior-sensitive changes, run representative inputs through the actual model and evaluate the resulting answers against criteria relevant to your task.
- Keep those inputs and evaluation criteria stable when comparing revisions, so changes in results can be interpreted.
- Use a language-model judge only as an evaluation aid, with suitable checks for its own consistency and failure modes; it is not a guarantee of correctness.
- Use lexical drift as a quick text-level signal alongside—not instead of—behavioral evaluation.
The article’s sample output includes a drift score of 0.4377 and similarity of 0.5623. Those are illustrative values for its sample code, not a benchmark, accuracy result, or evidence that the method works reliably in production. PhenoX likewise cautions that vector-based similarity cannot replace semantic evaluation by a language model.
