Fear of the number 13 is commonly called triskaidekaphobia. The word names a fear; it does not, by itself, mean someone has a mental health diagnosis. Whether fear is a clinical concern depends on its intensity and effects, including distress and avoidance.
What is the fear of the number 13 called?
Cambridge Dictionary defines triskaidekaphobia as the superstition that the number 13 is unlucky. The term combines Greek elements meaning “thirteen” and “fear.” Cambridge gives the US pronunciation as /ˌtrɪs.kaɪˌdek.əˈfoʊ.bi.ə/ and the UK pronunciation as /ˌtrɪs.kaɪˌdek.əˈfəʊ.bi.ə/.

Is fear of 13 a phobia or a diagnosis?
People may use “triskaidekaphobia” to describe fear or avoidance of 13, but naming a fear is not the same as establishing a diagnosis. The Cleveland Clinic discusses fear of specific numbers as potentially connected with religion or superstition, and says arithmophobia—extreme fear of numbers—is not a diagnosis listed in DSM-5.
The American Psychiatric Association’s assessment measures are intended to support clinical decision-making, not to diagnose someone on their own. Its Severity Measure for Specific Phobia—Adult, whose copyright is cited as 2013, includes questions about sudden terror or fright, anxiety or worry, and whether someone “avoided, or did not approach or enter, these situations.” These are general assessment areas for specific phobia, not validated triskaidekaphobia-specific criteria.

In practical terms, ordinary dislike or superstition about 13 is different from fear that causes substantial distress, physical anxiety reactions, or meaningful disruption to daily life. Those effects are relevant to a professional assessment, but they are not a self-diagnosis checklist. The APA explains that the DSM classifies and describes disorders for assessment and diagnosis; it does not provide treatment guidelines.
Why is 13 considered unlucky?
There is no single definitive historical origin established in the sources cited here. The Cleveland Clinic describes cultural associations people cite: in a Christian tradition, Judas is said to have been the thirteenth guest at the Last Supper; in a Norse story, Loki is the thirteenth god to arrive at a gathering. These are explanations associated with the superstition, not proof of one origin or evidence that 13 causes harm.

Cleveland Clinic psychologist Susan Albers, PsyD, observes, “Our brains are wired to recognize patterns and develop them.” That can help explain how people connect events and beliefs, but it is not a finding specifically about triskaidekaphobia.

How is fear of 13 different from fear of Friday the 13th?
Triskaidekaphobia refers to fear of the number 13. Fear focused specifically on Friday the 13th is narrower and is called paraskevidekatriaphobia by the Cleveland Clinic. The date-specific term does not change the distinction between a cultural superstition and a fear that causes significant distress or avoidance.

When might someone consider getting help?
Someone who is merely uneasy about 13 does not necessarily need treatment. If the fear is persistent and leads to significant distress or avoidance that interferes with everyday activities, speaking with a qualified mental health professional is an option. A clinician can consider the person’s specific experience and its impact rather than relying on the label alone.
