You can build a small Python tracker to record whether selected brands appear in AI search answers and which pages those answers cite. Treat its results as source-specific observations—not a universal ranking across AI engines. A prompt sent to one API is a sample of that API’s response, not a view into every search product or its internal ranking system.
Decide what “rank” means for this tracker
A minimal tracker can measure three different things: whether a response mentions a brand, whether it cites a page on a domain, and whether the source explicitly returns an ordering or position. Keep those measurements distinct. A citation is not automatically a rank, authority score, or measure of importance; Microsoft makes that distinction for its AI Performance report.

Google cautions that third-party tools cannot access its internal ranking or AI systems. No prompt-level API result should be presented as a universal position or as a copy of the consumer-facing experience.

Official site-owner reports and APIs measure different things from repeated prompt checks. Pick a collection path deliberately, and keep its outputs separate in your records and reporting.
#1 Best Overall
| Source | What it can tell you | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console Search Analytics API | Site performance data over a date range, filterable or groupable by dimensions such as query, page, country, and device. | Requires authorization; internal limits mean the API may return only top rows and does not guarantee every row. It is not a per-prompt AI answer archive. Google API reference |
| Bing Webmaster APIs | Programmatic registered-site search and index data, including rank, traffic, keyword, link, and crawl details. | These are site-oriented API capabilities, not a substitute for an exact prompt-and-answer log. Microsoft says legacy SOAP and POX APIs retire on 2026-08-31; use the current REST APIs for a new integration. Microsoft API documentation |
| Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance report | Aggregate citation activity, pages cited, citation trends, and grouped grounding queries across listed Microsoft experiences, including Microsoft Copilot, Bing AI-generated summaries, and selected partner integrations. | It reports citations, not ranking, authority, performance, or importance. Grounding queries are grouped phrases, not a log of every user prompt or answer; sparse activity may not appear. Microsoft report documentation |
| Google Search Console AI search reporting | Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in overall Web search reporting, and its current guide points site owners to a generative AI performance report. | It is Google Search reporting, not a cross-engine prompt-level record. Google does not guarantee that eligible pages will be crawled, indexed, or served. Google AI features guidance and Google generative AI guidance |
| Per-prompt web-search API observation | A repeatable request-and-response sample; OpenAI’s Responses API web search documentation describes source URL and title citation annotations. | One API’s retrieval is not a proxy for every live ChatGPT experience or search engine. Store its citations as observations, not universal rankings. OpenAI web search documentation |
For a small local project, a Python script, a configuration file, and SQLite or JSON Lines are sufficient implementation choices; no particular database, scheduler, or hosting service is required. Google’s Search Console API getting-started page links to a first Python app tutorial and was last updated 2025-08-28 UTC: Google setup guide. Keep credentials out of source control; the official OpenAI Python library recommends environment-based credential handling: OpenAI Python SDK.
Define a stable, small prompt set
Begin with a hand-maintained file of real reader or buyer questions, target brand spellings, and the owned domain. Keep exact prompt wording stable across runs. When a question changes, assign it a new prompt version or ID so a difference in output is not mistakenly attributed to changing visibility.
Rank #2
A simple configuration might contain prompt IDs and text, match terms for each brand, and domains to count as owned. Treat matching rules as explicit data: brand spelling variants, punctuation, and domain aliases can affect whether a response is counted. This is a reproducibility choice, not a guarantee about model behavior.

- Choose one source first. For official site-wide performance data, start with the relevant webmaster reporting surface or API. For prompt-specific observations, use a documented web-search endpoint that returns citations. Do not combine these into one collection method.
- Run the same prompt set. Send each unchanged prompt through the selected source, recording the request time and whether the call succeeded. If you alter a prompt, record a new version rather than overwriting its history.
- Extract only what the response exposes. Save any returned answer text or matching span, citations with displayed titles and URLs, and explicit position fields if provided. If there is no returned position, leave the position unset rather than inferring one from citation order.
- Persist each run before calculating trends. Keep the raw response or a reference to it alongside normalized fields. Record errors as well as successful calls so a missing observation is not mistaken for a negative result.
- Repeat on a schedule you can sustain. Compare like with like: same source, prompt version, target terms, and measurement rules. The resulting series describes observations from that setup, not a causal explanation for changes.
Store enough context to reproduce a result
A practical observation record can use fields such as these. They are recommended design choices; providers do not all return every field.
observed_at: timestamp in UTC.providerandcollection_method: for example, an official dashboard/API or a per-prompt API check.prompt_id,prompt_version, and exactprompt_text.target: brand or domain being monitored, plus normalized match terms.mentionedand, when available, the matching text span.citations: returned URL and displayed title for each source.position: only an explicit ordering or position returned by the source.statusand a raw-response reference for success, error, or incomplete output.
Keeping the provider and method on every record is essential: an aggregate citation report and a single API response do not have the same coverage or definition. Preserve source-specific raw measurements rather than manufacturing a common “AI rank.”
Calculate useful metrics without implying more than they show
For a fixed prompt set and one source, simple rates can answer practical visibility questions. Label them as sample rates or citation counts, and state the prompt set and reporting period beside the result.
- Brand mention rate: prompts with a detected mention divided by prompts successfully observed.
- Owned-domain citation rate: prompts with at least one citation matching the owned domain divided by prompts successfully observed.
- Unique cited pages: count of distinct owned URLs cited in the sampled responses.
- Prompt-level change: compare the same prompt version and source across two periods, retaining the underlying per-prompt records.
Keep Search Console clicks and impressions, Bing’s aggregate citation activity, and API prompt outputs in separate reports. Their coverage, aggregation, and definitions differ, so an unlabeled composite score would conceal what was measured.

Interpret visibility and eligibility cautiously
Bing describes its AI Performance trends as observational; they cannot establish that a specific content edit or model change caused a citation change. Its grouped grounding phrases also should not be represented as exact user questions.
Best Value
For Google, AI-feature inclusion depends on indexing and eligibility for a Search snippet, and Google says meeting requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. Its guidance says there are no additional technical requirements or special AI-specific optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Focus on foundational SEO, useful content, and accessibility rather than claims that special markup, tiny content chunks, or manufactured mentions ensure visibility.
Keep the prototype intentionally small
The minimum useful version is a stable prompt file, one clearly identified collection source, a record format that preserves context, and a report showing sample mention and citation rates. Add another source only when you can explain how its measurements differ and report them separately. This keeps the tool useful for monitoring changes without pretending it can expose hidden ranking systems.
