TP-Link Wi-Fi 6 vs. Wi-Fi 6E Routers: Which Should You Choose?

Wi-Fi 6E adds 6 GHz, but only compatible devices can use it. Compare your clients, coverage needs, ports, and TP-Link model details before choosing.

Choose a TP-Link Wi-Fi 6E router if you own devices that support Wi-Fi 6E and want them to use the additional 6 GHz band. Choose Wi-Fi 6 if your devices use Wi-Fi 6 or older and 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz meet your needs. A 6E router does not make older devices connect on 6 GHz, so check your phones, computers, tablets, and other important clients before paying extra.

What is the difference between Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E?

Wi-Fi 6E extends Wi-Fi 6 by adding the 6 GHz band. Wi-Fi 6 uses 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; Wi-Fi 6E can use all three. The amount of 6 GHz spectrum available varies by region, so the band’s local availability and rules matter. See TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 6E explanation for its U.S. overview.

The extra band is not a general speed upgrade that every connected device can use. A device needs Wi-Fi 6E or other 6 GHz-capable support to connect on 6 GHz. Devices without it can still connect using compatible bands, but they cannot take advantage of the router’s 6 GHz radio.

Should you choose TP-Link Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E?

Choose Wi-Fi 6 if… Choose Wi-Fi 6E if…
Your devices are Wi-Fi 6 or older, and 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz meet your household’s needs. You have 6 GHz-capable devices and want them to use the additional band.
You would rather compare specific router features and price than pay for a band your devices cannot use. You have a practical use for 6 GHz and have confirmed that your client devices support it.
Your main concern is coverage: assess router placement or whether you need mesh rather than assuming a different Wi-Fi generation will fix dead zones. Your main concern is coverage: assess placement or mesh in the same way; 6 GHz does not replace coverage planning.

Before deciding, check the devices that matter most on your network. Look up their wireless specifications, especially for phones, laptops, tablets, and VR equipment. TP-Link’s Archer AXE5400 product information notes that a Wi-Fi 6E-capable client may be needed for a 6 GHz connection.

What do TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 6E router specifications mean?

Archer AXE75

TP-Link lists the U.S. Archer AXE75 as an AXE5400 tri-band Wi-Fi 6E router, with advertised rates of 574 Mbps at 2.4 GHz, 2402 Mbps at 5 GHz, and 2402 Mbps at 6 GHz. Those are manufacturer-listed radio link rates, not a promise of internet speed or an independent performance result. Actual internet throughput depends on factors such as your service plan, client device, connection conditions, and network setup.

The product page also lists a 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN port and describes nominal range as 2–3 bedrooms. Treat that range as a manufacturer description, not a guarantee for a particular home. Check the exact hardware revision and regional product page before comparing specifications: TP-Link Archer AXE75 specifications.

  • WiFi 6E Tri-Band Mesh WiFi – Cover up to 7,200 Sq.Ft with next-gen seamless WiFi and make dead zones and buffering a thing of the past¹ ²
  • Brand-New 6 GHz Band – Experience the latest frequency of WiFi, eliminating interference from all legacy devices. The 6 GHz band can work as a backhaul to ensure stable connections between nodes by default. You can switch it to Wi-Fi Network mode and connect your WiFi 6E-compatible devices to 6GHz Network³
  • True Tri-Band Speed – All three WiFi bands work together to unleash your network’s total speeds up to 5,400 Mbps for 200 devices(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);5 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)¹ ³
  • Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
  • Unlock the Full Potential of WiFi 6 - Opening the 6 GHz band will change the game for WiFi 6. WiFi 6 brings about upgraded performance in network efficiency and capacity. Whereas the advantages of WiFi 6 are not fully realized while competing with transmissions from WiFi 5 (or other radios). The 6 GHz band is available only for WiFi 6 traffic, allowing WiFi 6 to meet its intended potential

Archer AXE5400

TP-Link’s Archer AXE5400 page lists the same advertised band rates—574 Mbps at 2.4 GHz, 2402 Mbps at 5 GHz, and 2402 Mbps at 6 GHz—and likewise says a 6 GHz connection may require a Wi-Fi 6E client. These figures describe the listed model’s radio rates; they do not establish a speed advantage over a Wi-Fi 6 router in your home. Confirm the exact revision, since TP-Link product pages distinguish versions.

When is a mesh system a better fit?

If you are trying to cover a whole home or eliminate dead zones, compare router placement and mesh options rather than treating Wi-Fi 6E as a coverage solution. TP-Link’s Deco XE75 is a Wi-Fi 6E mesh system, not a standalone router. Its U.S. datasheet lists router and access point modes, but does not establish coverage for a particular home. • Ports: Compare WAN and LAN port speeds with your internet service and wired devices.
  • Model details: Confirm revision, regional availability, and specifications on the relevant TP-Link product page.
  • Total cost: Compare current local prices for the specific router or mesh package you need; prices and availability can vary by region.
