TP-Link vs. ASUS, NETGEAR and eero: Which Router Brand Has the Best Security Support?

eero offers the clearest broad five-year security-update promise, but the safest choice depends on your exact router model, hardware revision, region, seller and verified support end date.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: eero publishes the clearest broad consumer promise: new devices bought from eero.com or Amazon.com receive guaranteed software-security updates for at least five years, unless a later model-specific date applies. ASUS has useful dated commitments for certain Singapore Cybersecurity Labelling Scheme routers. NETGEAR and TP-Link provide lifecycle and security information, but support is more dependent on the exact model, hardware revision, region and purchase circumstances. That makes eero the easiest policy to understand—not proof that it has the fastest patches or the best security engineering on every product.

What “best security support” should mean for a router

A router is the security boundary between your home network and the internet. Its firmware controls the firewall, wireless encryption, remote-management features and often automatic updates. A vulnerability can expose every phone, computer, camera and smart-home device behind it, so support after purchase matters as much as the hardware specifications.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Brand comparisons become misleading when they treat one policy as a universal promise. Security support has several separate dimensions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Guaranteed duration: Is there a minimum period the manufacturer commits to, or only an intention to issue updates?
  • How the period is calculated: From purchase, manufacture, launch or a model-specific calendar date?
  • Model and hardware coverage: Does the policy cover every revision, or only named products?
  • Geography and sales channel: Does the commitment apply worldwide and to devices bought from any seller?
  • Delivery: Are updates automatic, or must the owner find and install them?
  • End-of-support handling: Is there a clear end date and an explicit statement that security patches stop?
  • Vulnerability response: Can researchers report flaws, and does the company publish affected and fixed versions?

The available vendor documents answer these questions unevenly. They describe policies and examples, not a controlled comparison of patch speed, vulnerability counts or real-world security outcomes.

At a glance: eero, ASUS, NETGEAR and TP-Link

Brand What the published policy establishes How duration is expressed Important limits
eero Guaranteed software-security updates for at least five years for new purchases from eero.com or Amazon.com, unless a later model date applies. Purchase-based minimum plus a model-specific date. Purchases from other sellers receive the guarantee at least until the date listed for the device. Updates after that period are only an effort subject to technical and other limitations.
ASUS Dated support commitments for routers covered by Singapore’s Cybersecurity Labelling Scheme (CLS). Calendar end dates for listed product groups. The cited page is explicitly Singapore-only and does not establish a worldwide promise for every ASUS router.
NETGEAR An end-of-service (EOS) product no longer receives firmware, maintenance or security updates. A June 2026 advisory lists model-specific affected, fixed and EOS products. Products not manufactured for at least three years may become obsolete and enter EOS, subject to longer legal requirements. Exact EOS status varies by product and region. Non-Australian customers are directed to a separate rest-of-world policy page.
TP-Link A coordinated vulnerability-reporting process and an active firmware program for currently supported product lines. No universal customer-support term is stated. Vulnerability reports are acknowledged within five working days; remediation typically takes up to 90 days or longer. Hardware limits, platform age and unavailable test units mean some legacy products cannot be patched. Model and hardware version must be checked individually.

On policy clarity alone, eero is the strongest broad consumer answer. That conclusion should not be expanded into a claim that every eero update arrives faster, or that every eero model is supported longer than every competing model.

eero: the clearest purchase-based minimum

eero’s support policy says: “We’ll support your eero devices with guaranteed software security updates until at least five years from when you bought them new on eero.com or Amazon.com (or until the date stated below if later).” The purchase source is part of the promise. If you bought the device elsewhere, eero says its guarantee lasts at least until the date listed for that model.

How eero’s dates work

The policy combines the five-year minimum with a table of model-specific dates. The current table lists eero 7, eero Pro 7, eero 6, eero 6+, eero Pro 6E, eero Max 7 and several other products through October 31, 2031. It lists the original eero Pro through March 11, 2030, eero (2nd Generation) through April 28, 2030, and eero Pro 6 through July 14, 2030.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those are dates on the current support page, not a promise that every future eero product will receive the same end date. When the guaranteed period ends, eero says it will strive to provide updates, subject to technical and other limitations. The company also states: “When software security updates end, your eero device will still work and can still provide wifi.” Continued connectivity does not mean continued protection from newly discovered vulnerabilities, so an unsupported unit should not be treated as equivalent to a patched one.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54) | 4 x 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Ports, EasyMesh Compatible, Support Guest WiFi, Access Point Mode, IPv6 & Parental Controls
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

What eero does—and does not—prove

  • The policy gives a household a concrete minimum and a calendar date to verify.
  • The five-year term is tied to a new purchase from two named channels, so the invoice and seller matter.
  • The policy does not publish a cross-brand patch-speed benchmark.
  • A model can remain usable after security updates stop, but its risk profile changes.

ASUS: useful dates, but only for a Singapore program

ASUS publishes a page titled “Duration of Security Update Support (only for Singapore).” It says ASUS will support routers that comply with Singapore’s Cybersecurity Labelling Scheme until the dates shown, with extended support potentially provided afterward.

The published Singapore end dates

Scope in the ASUS page Published support end date
Listed CLS router product groups March 27, 2028
Listed CLS router product groups February 11, 2029
Listed CLS router product groups September 30, 2029

The page is valuable because it shows dated commitments instead of an indefinite “supported” label. However, the Singapore-only scope is decisive. A buyer in another country should not treat these dates as a worldwide guarantee, and an ASUS router not included in the listed CLS groups is not covered by the evidence above. Check the local ASUS support page and the exact model and hardware revision before relying on a date.

NETGEAR: explicit EOS language and model-specific advisories

NETGEAR’s consumer End of Service policy is unusually direct about what happens at the end: “An EOS product will no longer receive firmware updates, maintenance releases, or security updates.” The policy says products that have not been manufactured for at least three years—or longer where law requires—may become obsolete and enter EOS. It provides a product lookup and alerts, and directs customers outside Australia to a separate rest-of-world policy.

Why the manufacture-based threshold requires care

A three-year manufacturing threshold is not the same as three years from the day you bought a router. Retail stock can be sold long after manufacture, and a model can have a different regional policy. Use NETGEAR’s lookup for the exact product rather than estimating from your receipt or the model’s marketing launch.

What the June 2026 advisory shows

NETGEAR’s June 2026 security advisory lists model-specific vulnerabilities, affected products, fixed firmware versions and recommendations. It says a device with automatic updates enabled may already have received a patch, while advising owners to check and install the latest firmware where necessary. The advisory marks some products EOS and says no further security updates are planned for them. It also lists patched models. That combination demonstrates why “NETGEAR is supported” is not a sufficient answer: one model can have a fixed release while another has reached EOS.

Automatic updates are helpful, not a substitute for verification

Enable automatic updates when the router offers them, but periodically open the administration interface and record the installed firmware version. An advisory may require a manual check, a reboot or a hardware-revision match. If the product is marked EOS, an automatic-update setting cannot create a patch that the manufacturer no longer plans to publish.

TP-Link: a defined disclosure process, with legacy exceptions

TP-Link’s Product Security Trust Center describes coordinated vulnerability reporting: acknowledgment within five working days, triage and impact assessment, remediation, and publication. It says remediation typically takes up to 90 days or longer. That is a process target for handling reports, not a guaranteed customer patch deadline. A vulnerability may require longer investigation, testing or coordination with other vendors.

What the CVE-2023-50224 statement establishes

In its statement about CVE-2023-50224, TP-Link says: “For our currently supported product lines, we maintain an active firmware update program and a published process for vulnerability disclosure.” The same statement explains that hardware limitations, platform age and lack of test units mean not all legacy products can receive patches. Its affected-product table includes both patched and unpatched legacy examples.

That is a candid lifecycle warning. A TP-Link brand label cannot tell you whether a particular unit is in an actively supported line. Check the model number and hardware version against the current security advisory. A hardware revision printed as “Ver” or “H/W” on the label may have a different firmware file and support status from a visually similar revision.

How to check whether your router is still supported

Use this process before buying a replacement or deciding that an old router is safe to keep:

  1. Identify the exact product. Read the label on the router or its box. Record the full model name, hardware revision, serial information if requested, and the country or region where it was sold.
  2. Check the management interface. Sign in locally and open the firmware, system or administration page. Record the installed firmware version and look for an automatic-update setting. Menu names differ by model; do not download firmware intended for a similar-looking device.
  3. Open the manufacturer’s current support or security page. Search by the complete model and hardware revision. For NETGEAR, use the EOS lookup and the applicable regional policy. For eero, compare the model with the published date table and account for the purchase channel. For ASUS, verify whether the router is in the relevant local or Singapore CLS listing. For TP-Link, read the model-specific advisory and affected-product table.
  4. Compare the date with today. A date in the future means the published commitment has not yet expired; it does not guarantee that every vulnerability has already been fixed. “EOS,” “end of support” or “no further updates planned” means the security-update path has ended.
  5. Install the latest release. Download only from the manufacturer’s official support page or use the router’s verified update mechanism. Confirm the displayed version after installation and reboot, if instructed.
  6. Save the result. Keep the model, revision, installed version and support-through date in a note or household inventory. Recheck after major advisories or at least periodically.

When should you replace an end-of-support router?

Plan replacement when the manufacturer identifies the device as EOS and says no further security fixes are planned. NETGEAR explicitly defines EOS that way, and TP-Link notes that some legacy hardware cannot be patched. Continuing to use an unsupported router may leave an internet-facing flaw permanently unfixable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replacement is especially urgent when:

  • the router’s administration page is exposed to the internet or remote management cannot be disabled;
  • the device is still running firmware with a publicly documented, unpatched vulnerability;
  • the manufacturer cannot provide a firmware file for the exact hardware revision;
  • the router is used for work, payments, cameras, access control or other high-consequence activity; or
  • the device can no longer run current encryption, update or account-protection features.

Until replacement, disable remote administration from the internet, use a strong unique administrator password, keep Wi-Fi encryption on its strongest compatible setting, and separate untrusted smart-home devices onto a guest or isolated network where the router supports it. These measures reduce exposure but do not replace a security patch.

A practical buying framework for security support

When comparing two specific routers, score the policies rather than the logos:

Question What a strong answer looks like Why it matters
Is support guaranteed? A stated minimum or dated commitment, with conditions disclosed. An aspiration is harder to use for a purchase decision.
Can you calculate the end date? The policy explains whether the clock starts at purchase, manufacture or a model date. Two routers bought today may have very different remaining support.
Is the exact model covered? The support page lists the model and hardware revision. Revisions can have different firmware and hardware capabilities.
Does region matter? The country and sales-channel restrictions are explicit. A foreign-market date may not apply to your unit.
Are updates automatic? Automatic delivery is available, with a way to verify the installed version. It reduces the chance that a household misses a patch.
What happens at EOS? The vendor states whether firmware and security updates stop. You can plan replacement before protection disappears.
Can vulnerabilities be reported? A public disclosure channel and affected-product notices exist. Transparency helps owners determine whether their model is affected.

Using this framework, eero is the easiest of these four brands to evaluate for a new mainstream purchase because its five-year minimum and model dates are plainly stated. ASUS supplies strong dated evidence within Singapore’s CLS scope. NETGEAR offers clear EOS terminology and actionable advisories, while TP-Link documents its disclosure process and warns that legacy hardware may be unpatchable. The best choice for an individual home remains the model with the longest verified support remaining for that buyer’s region and purchase channel.

Bottom line for common buying situations

You want the clearest published minimum

Choose an eero model only after checking its table date and buying channel. The five-year guarantee applies to new purchases from eero.com or Amazon.com; other sellers receive at least the listed model date.

You are buying ASUS in Singapore

Use the CLS support page and match the exact product group to its date. Do not generalize those Singapore dates to another country.

You already own a NETGEAR router

Run the product lookup, check the applicable regional policy and compare the installed firmware with the June 2026 advisory. An EOS label means firmware, maintenance and security updates have ended.

You already own a TP-Link router

Check the model and hardware version in the current security advisory, especially if the product is several years old. TP-Link’s active program applies to currently supported lines, not automatically to every legacy device.

You are choosing between otherwise similar models

Prefer the one with a published support-through date that is still active, automatic updates, a visible firmware version, and a clear replacement path at EOS. Those are measurable support advantages; they are not claims about overall vulnerability rates or patch speed.
